Just got back into the game after a year away....I usually re-join in the winter, play a few weeks and then get busy with my other projects.
One thing that struck me this time around was the player count. On a the past couple nights, not nearly the huge numbers I recall seeing in the past. Are we all so old we recall having to pick between two late war arenas? :)
Where is everyone? Where's all those players?
The game seems to be the same, improving to match the improved graphics available....
I'm curious what people think
-
Where is everyone? Where's all those players?
They left for all kind of reasons players have been always leaving for: Losing interest in thsi hobby after XX years, "having seen it all" in AH and now went to other games, grown up and now facing real life, being hit by economical problems, simply just died, and so on...
I think the question is more like "where are the new players to replace them" ;)
-
See rule #4
-
Oh I figure there will be deniers and so on.
I just thought I would inquire. I've played for a few hours over the weekend.
One of the first turn offs for me was the ENY, so I couldn't take up anything up I wanted to fly. I understand that's HTC's way to shove people into trading sides.....but if you are flying with a group of friends, whose going to do that?
But that's one of my gripes. It seems counter productive to prevent a subscriber from flying what they want. I'm fine with the Perk Point system, at my rate of kills, I won't have the keys to a 262 until next summer! It'll be a short ride lol But all I wanted to fly was a P-51B or a P-38. Nope. Please try a different bird.
I'm hardly an Ace by any means and restricting what I can fly based on low arena numbers is an annoyance.

Howdy mate - hope all is well.
Yes, the population is shrinking; a lot like Detroit. I remember in 2002 when there were 500+ in the "LW" arena. Still a good product and I enjoy it immensely.

The P-38 series is never completely blocked by ENY :old:

The P-38 series is never completely blocked by ENY :old:
Really? I kept getting the pop up, something about ENY 17 and trying airplane after airplane to go fly. And, since the ords were all porked, I had to deal with that pop up on everything too!
-
1. The amount of fighter based competition has increased (WT,Il2, WOT, ect )
2. The graphics (as of now) don't attract new players.
3. Financial reasons (costs) as snailman mentioned.
4. Banning of long term players.
5. Eny, side switch times, size of the map in game play.
6. Many children can't handle the complexity of the skill this game takes or the patience.
7. 2 weeks is not long enough for the majority of people trying to figure out how to play this game with the <3 hours they have to play after work/school.
8. Marketing/advertising.
All of these things add up.
Edit: AH is like the Katatonia of the music world. Amazing in almost every aspect of their musicianship and range, yet are not well known and have a small fan base due to their pride of not signing a record label.
-
Need to improve the ground war. :bolt:
May be improved with the update in 2 weeks. :neener:
May they return with a Fury. :joystick:
-
Really? I kept getting the pop up, something about ENY 17 and trying airplane after airplane to go fly.
You don't have to "try plane after plane" as all ENY values are stated just in the list you select your plane from. :P
At ENY 17, the P-51B (20), P-38J (20) and P-38G (35) are still available. As ENY does max out at 29, the 38G will always be available. And when ENY actually goes that high, actually finding a target to shoot on can be a bigger problem than chosing the right plane for the job :D
-
The P-38 series is never completely blocked by ENY :old:
Maybe twice I have had the J blocked but that was after a map change. The G never as Lusche pointed out
-
Don't play too much anymore been waiting to see how the new graphics look but then again that ain't going to change the way game play is now where HO is the norm.... If the new graphics update will ever happen.

I re-subbed after being gone for two years and the first impression I got was the same.
I was hoping popular games like Warthunder might actually indirectly make the sim community larger by attracting players who would want to be more and more immersed in the genre but I guess that is not happening how I thought it might. :airplane:
-
Good to see you back despite the state of the union LePaul. One of the real "good guys" I remember from long ago.
Despite all the problems, perceived, real, or otherwise, there is still fun to be had, so it's good to see guys like yourself coming back. Hopefully even more will do so once the beta of the new version is running.

They may not KNOW there is a game that they can get more immersion from.

I remember the good ole days, many names still come to mind..Ripsnort and many others. I'm hoping to sign on this evening and find a fun mission or two, the group efforts were the most fun for me. I was always one who liked the strategy aspect of the game. If many folks worked together...fighters, bombers, GVs...you could advance the front a lot.

a lot like Detroit.
I grew up in a suburb of Detroit from the early 1960's until the mid 1980's. I went back to visit a couple of months ago. It might finally have hit bottom and be on its way up (although it has a long way to climb).

Who or what is "Katatonia"? ;)
Kidding of course... even if I haven't heard of the band it's a good analogy.
I agree with almost everything else but I only know of one person who was banned from the game itself and that needed to be done given the circumstances. I know I didn't shed any tears for him. There may have been others I'm not aware of but still it has to be a very small number.

I dunno...it seems the "I'm back" BBS posts outnumber the "I'm leaving" ones.

Grizz
Irishone
Bluberry
Hlbly
To name a couple:
it's not really that much and I think there are a couple more, as well as, the people who quit because of the issue. But most did play for years and this can lag in them getting their friends to play/extra revenues.
Yeah, Katatonia check em out, the best band you never heard of :D
We all want this game to succeed. And while WT did bring a huge amount of people into the genre, HTC has to be able to find a way to steal players from there.
As you can tell from WT, there is a huge market for flight sims and combat scenarios in WW2. With the whole complexity that AH offers (world map, tanks, bombers, fighters, flight model, general war concept,) it should be the game of the century. It is just lacking marketing, graphics, and discount incentives to sucker new players in.

Grizz and Irish weren't banned from the game. They were banned from the BBS. They choose not to play for that reason

I understand Bluberry was banned due to some hacking. That is all I know.
Their are a quite a number from our squad that havent been playing much. Hoping that some of the new stuff will be out this month

At least get the story right from both sides regardless if history is being rewritten.
#acking has such a sinister sound to it for a game like ours. Accomplishing nothing but waking up sleeping feelings and anger over someone already long gone. While causing casual observers to question having confidence in playing our game. This was resolved privately in the real world by HTC. After all, the person in question will never be able to enjoy our game again as a result of this incident. Isn't that enough?
There are too many vested parties in the drama that erupts over the groups of players and individuals surrounding much of this. Give Skuzzy a break.

I figure if it weren't for me flying, those guys with high scores would have to search a bit harder for kills :D
Another late late night of fun was chalked up...wish my dying X-52 wouldn't induce the "stop moving your controls so much" prompts. Replacing that is on the top of my "When I get employment again" check list! I've got a neat little setup with the X-52 and game...the minute I start banking and turning, the stall horn wails away and I fight to control the airplane. Dampening the controls...and the user (with Sam Adams) seems to find a happy middle ground.

I left for quite a variety of reason the main reason is my dad is bed ridden and I am his primary care taker. I could pay the $15 a month, problem is when I can actually logon, the numbers are so low its not worth spending the money when I can do something like Payday 2 for a few minutes.
I honestly didn't want to quit flying, I have no choice - the low numbers when I am online and fact that i can barely spot a sortie here and there, just left me with no interest in continuing to play. That and the fact that losing all my perks, because I skip a month or two - was downgrading.
Falcon 6 operates my time, and some cheap steam games; I check back in here time to time to check on topgun and everyone else, but its probably R.I.P. for me ever coming back. In fact my dad just got back out of the hospital, dealing with social security and running a business just is to much.

Agreed. Hacking is way different than IPs. Those change for many of us...probably most...

My work schedule has been interfering with my play for years now. If Im lucky I get one day off a week and maybe a few hours to play that night. Between lots of over time and getting older I just dont have the gas to play much anymore. A lot of us have work issues, or have started families, or have plain gotten old.
I also dont think flight games have taken on to the younger generation. The first wave of gamers was older cause you had to be to afford it and there wasnt as much console competition as well as more interest in historical flight back in the earlier days and Aces High was pretty much the cutting edge at the time. At least with multi-player. Its still a very sound game model I believe and its only weakness is its dated graphics.
For me its the best game model out there.

I kept my subscription for years, even though I seldom flew.
After a conflict with a very small group (several yrs ago) of individuals on the CM team left a bad taste in my mouth, I started creating terrains and write-ups as an AvA staffer.
It's still a great game, but by the time the graphics update was announced, I'd lost interest and moved on to other endeavors.
It's curiosity and old friends that keep me coming back to check the boards.

Unfortunately I fear the lack of posts in response to HT's picture of the new lighting is a tell tale sign of where things stand... I can only hope the new update kicks ass, they do a great job promoting it and the ranks swell once again.

Can't tell you how many I see beating the dead horse on the 12 hour rule who currently have the ability to change twice in one calendar day and refuse to. :devil

True, but as the player numbers drop it would help if the 12 hour rule was relaxed a bit to compensate. It certainly would help retain a few more people.
Can't tell you how many I see beating the dead horse on the 12 hour rule who currently have the ability to change twice in one calendar day and refuse to. :devil
Well seeing as rarely get to play a 12 hour stretch it doesn't work out so well now does it? So at best you can switch once a day. With the numbers as they are and how the fights can dry up along a whole front in nothing flat it doesn't leave you a lot of options.
So people log off.... and the numbers look worst.... and new players look in and say "where is everyone?" and they leave too.
-

But even if so, will they stay? I doubt longtime players that finally quit AH for good will be returning just for any kind of better graphics. I can't recall any "the graphics suck so much now, I'm leaving" posts ;)
Yes, I'm very sceptical about all that stuff, but I also want to be very much wrong with that scepticism... :old:

I agree with Lusche, if the game play isn't "fixed" players aren't going to stay and play just because it looks pretty. Heck they have trouble keeping people with one of the best flight models in the genre.
-
Oh and just for the record: As we put all in or very personal reasons for elaving or staying in AH: My personal 'nail in the coffin', even when the numbers will rise again - The strats. The working central strats nothing less than 'saved' the game for me personally. Now with he new setup, I'm just staying a bit to see if some corrections will be made and we get a huge, meaningful centralized target again. If not, I'm gone.
This is not in any way a threat (such a thing wouldn't work anyway :D), just a little personal statement about my own sentiments. Just a sandgrain in the big overall picture. :)
-
So far as the update, I too agree with Lusche, and have been posting so for the last year or so. I'm hopeful that there will be enough change to not only bring many vets out of the woodwork, but interest new players as well. A consolidated and more organized help/new player area would help greatly with this IMO, in addition to the new version and game itself. I do have fears that others have mentioned, that for 2 weeks there will be a spike in numbers, but shortly after that, once the 2 week trial period is up, it'll drop back off to current numbers, IF more aggressive and progressive changes aren't implemented by HTC in a wide swath of issues regarding the game play mechanics.
I'm in the precise position that Lusche is in, and I know many others are as well - pretty much marking time and waiting to see what comes. There is opportunity out there IMO for the game to make great strides in both numbers of players and the quality of the product. We'll know soon enough.
I'm positive enough to think that if a product which to me is crap compared to this one in terms of the actual plane vs plane combat, like WT, can attract SO many players, that there is interest in WW2 aviation and gaming out there, it just will take the right lure on the line to pull them over here. It CAN be done, but action must be taken to do so - another 3 or 4 years of little to no gameplay adjustments just won't get it done IMO. There is no better time than the release of a drastically improved graphics/visual update to implement overall changes and improvements to the game mechanics, at least IMO.
-
I agree with Lusche, if the game play isn't "fixed" players aren't going to stay and play just because it looks pretty. Heck they have trouble keeping people with one of the best flight models in the genre.
That's may be true. As far as game play goes, I try not to let too much bother me once I log in. I know that a game like this can get people a little heated... You know, make them say dumb toejam...
Anywho, I won't leave due to sub-par graphics alone. I do hope that this new update brings back a lot of people.

I'm not sure on the game mechanics, I usually fly solo in a fighter and mix it up. There is however options, FSO scenarios and the like along with the chaos in the main arenas. I never subscribed to anything like this online gaming before, but I was drawn to its uniqueness. I appreciate a small group of friends who made a business of quality from something they loved. If quality and dedication continue how can people not also be attracted by that. It represents an era of honor and endeavor against untenable odds which I'm drawn to like a moth to an irresistible light. There is always an ebb and flow, but somethings never change.
All the best friend and foe...

Ok...I admit I'm a online gaming noob and this is my first online game I ever tried...but I must say considering we are all interacting with codes and what we see is all computer coding I Find myself impressed and excited by the graphics as they are now..I've seen the iL2 graphics and they are very Nice but the AH community here is what I enjoy most about the game..bish rook or knight I have player's I really enjoy seeing logged on..game or simulator I dont know..I'm staying...just my noob two cents. Question...with better and better graphics are people with older systems going to have to upgrade to play?

We need to be helping new players not making fun of noobs as I see so often in the game. I see so much anger from certain people in the game if they get shot down, I see accusation of cheating and hacking, There are a couple of people that no matter the situation it is always the other guys fault and they are constantly saying the guy is a cheater or hacker. I see people saying that is impossible to do in a airplane and they are right it is impossible to do in a real airplane but these are cartoon airplanes and fly nothing like real airplanes. People just need to lighten up and have fun and help the players that are not so good, at least if the red guy is better it will give the better player a better fight. I find if I get shot down or my tank blows up I get a brand new one and it only cost $14.95. I do get upset sometimes if I get shot down by a shot that I think should not have been possible but I don't go off on the guy in PM like some of the nasty ones I have received. I would hate to take the blood pressure of some of the players here while they are playing this game, probably through the ceiling.
-
I've been playing off and on since 2000 I think. I check in time to time because thanks to Aces High I've developed a genuine interest WWII and in particular the WWII air combat. But the things that kept me in the game back in the day seem to be a thing of the past now or at least the last time I've played over a year ago. We use to be able to attack a base with a handful of squaddies and meet some decent resistance. Now (please asterisk every time I say now because I have not played recently) because of automatic base defense it seems nearly impossible without a horde of players. And with the extremely large maps, the likely hood of meeting an evenly matched opponent is highly unlikely.
It use to be fun fighting teams like the Ak's, BKs, Bops, MWs, and Hornets for a base or being a able to attack a base with a small group in general. Now it seems that aspect of the game is gone. That coupled with the fact some of my favorite planes have been remodeled (SpitV and CHog) have pretty much kept me away from the game outside of checking the BB's time to time.
I'd like to come back but the maps would need to be smaller and the bases should revert back to early AHII format with strats and all.
-
In realestate is is location, location, location.
This is online realestate. Like the band I've never heard of. How can anyone hear of you if you won't sign a label? If AH rolls out bells and whistles like its the year 2025 and no one is around to fly it....what happens then?
Insanity, expecting change with all the same inputs. I hope, I wish, I dream....whatever.
boo
-
I like the old strats and base capture myself.
And smaller maps would be great! It forces people to action. Even the medium size ones are cool because you can still sneak bases. Large maps are too strenuous, and frustrating to only find small bars, there is too much not going on in one place, so its hard to find action.
-

It use to be fun fighting teams like the Ak's, BKs, Bops, MWs, and Hornets for a base or being a able to attack a base with a small group in general. Now it seems that aspect of the game is gone. That coupled with the fact some of my favorite planes have been remodeled (SpitV and CHog) have pretty much kept me away from the game outside of checking the BB's time to time.
I'd like to come back but the maps would need to be smaller and the bases should revert back to early AHII format with strats and all.
It can still happen and does now and then. The difference is that now most players look at the game as a capture is the "win". In the old days the battle was the "win". Sure it was always great to FINALLY capture that base you fought so hard for, but even if you lost it, you knew you did everything you could and fought well and you got ready for the next base because you KNEW they were coming again for the next one in line.
Now, heaven forbid your mission fails to get the capture, and if there is resistance, pack it up and move some place else. Sad, but that is how the game is these days. That is the part that has to be tweaked or all those players that come to check out the new eye candy when they release it aren't going to stick around.

I'm glad to have posed a good question with a lot of interesting input
Skuzzy: Don't taz me, bro, I didn't have any control on their hacker talk :)
I've managed to kill my X-52 controller, so my game satisfaction will certainly rise some, once I can afford to replace that thing!
Another thing someone else mentioned really hit it on the head. The Forum / Community is what has really helped make the game what it is for many of us....kind of like an old friend. I know the O'Club is much different than it was 10 years ago, but despite the "colorful" threads of the past, many of us all got to know each other. Many of us killed many work hours chiming in on the forums. Then we spent our home time online, gaming away.
I have a lot of good memories here, although things seem like a shadow of their former self. I hope the upcoming game changes DOES draw in those old friends again. And some new players as well.
The learning curve is pretty steep and the comments on that are spot on. I know a couple pilot friends who won't play because it takes too long to get any good at it. I was surprised to hear that from airline pilots! So, its not just the new-to-flight-sims guys! We need to figure out a way to help even the real-life pilots up to speed!

I wrote 3-4 paragraphs to debate this, then I realized I would probably be PNG just for my criticism and deleted it.

I mean, I already came...but I will definitely stay longer if you give us the sheep back.
Sheep and 1 hour = My 15 bucks

new graphics will get me to have a look. But decent fights will get me to stay. Bring capture lattices back and ban the big maps.

So true I don't know how many times I have been at a base where we are defending and the resistance gets strong next thing I know everyone is gone instead of fighting.
People complain about no fights but they seem to only want the easy fights with odds on their side.
I followed a guy in buffs for a sector in a 110 yesterday as I got close he bailed then laughed and said that was the way to play if you want base captures. Got on the tail of his buddies buff and he bailed also and said they didn't care about anything except getting the base captures. :bhead That is the kind of game play that will finally make me call it quits. :bolt: I say there needs to be penalty for bailing if there is a red guy close by. :devil

I understand what real pilots go through as a flight instructor, i use to find myself trying to fly these as real airplanes fly, doesn't and will not work in this game you need to
develop a technique just for the game. :airplane:

Airline pilots know how to normally fly but (unless they have some other training) don't know squat about ACM; and ACM takes a lot longer to learn than normal flying.
I went to Air Combat USA with two other guys: one a person like me who had flown a lot of Air Warrior and was good in Air Warrior but had very little time in real planes (in his case, almost zero), and a pilot with 1000 hours and a commercial rating but no time in Air Warrior. We creamed the commercial pilot in the dogfights.
It's like a long-time skater thinking it should be easy to play hockey or a long-time truck driver thinking it should be easy to be good at rally racing or a normal commuter motorcyclist thinking that he should be able to hop in and be great at motocross.

Many many airline pilots come from a military flying background.

Doesn't change Brooke's point in any way though.

I did say
unless they have some other training
However, the large majority of military pilots don't know ACM. That's not part of training to be a cargo pilot, transport pilot, B-52 pilot (as far as I know), recon pilot, sub hunter, etc.

Perhaps still a majority .... but not all of them were/are fighter pilots.

Correct. There's a lot of fighter pilots out there...and there's a lot of KC-135, KC-10, C-17, etc etc =)
My friend flew tankers (KC-135). He said only a barbarian would fly 8 hours without a latrine :)

Still relevant, would be great if hi-tech made a last ditch effort to try this. It's been needed for over 7 years....

The sad reality is the game does not attract young players. They did not grow up doodling P51's and F4U's in their school notebooks. Their dads fought in Viet Nam and Iraq, not WWII. They did not get to watch "Victory at Sea" and "Rings Around Rabul" like many of us. For many of the youngsters, they just don't have the curiosity or interest in knowing what it was like to have fought in the Great War. That's a high hurdle to clear.

Holy Necrobump, Batman!
-
I have to ask, what's a "capture lattice"?
-
They left for all kind of reasons players have been always leaving for: Losing interest in thsi hobby after XX years, "having seen it all" in AH and now went to other games, grown up and now facing real life, being hit by economical problems, simply just died, and so on...
I think the question is more like "where are the new players to replace them" ;)
This may be a 7 year old post but it is still relevant today.
To be completely honest, if I started my 2 week trial today it would be extremely doubtful that I would commit to a subscription.
-
I am kind of new still with about 5 years of experience in the game. Not perfect, but not a bad stick either.

This barbarian did a 12.6 one time on an adventure far, far away.

Can anyone name another multiplayer online game that has the same very low monthly subscription that then allows the customer access to everything in the game on a professionally run company owned server?
Serious question..

This game needs a final polishing and a few bug fixes . it's nowhere near dead but it is certainly overcomplex if you consider how menus, tutorials and guides are built into almost all new high budget games.

There are lots of games out there.
Call of Duty: WWII (https://store.steampowered.com/app/476600/Call_of_Duty_WWII/) Is on Steam, is $60 for the game, and I dont think it cost anything to play on line.
For those playing it on line, https://steamcharts.com/app/476620
as apposed to, https://steamcharts.com/app/651090
or https://steamcharts.com/app/223750
I dont know if that starts to answer your question or not. I picked the WWII version of call of duty just to show players ARE ok with WWII worlds. And the AH page hurts because MOST players play through Hitechs portal not steams, But DCS seems alive and well. How many servers this covers I dont know, I didnt dig into it that deep, I think the players are out there. They just need to be lead to AH.

The lack of readily available training has resulted in the loss of thousands of subscribers. This is a known fact, acknowledged by Hitech when the game launched on Steam a few years ago. Players sit in the tower for 15 minutes and have no clue how to access a plane, vehicle or radio coms; much less get off the runway.
The Help channel + button on the clipboard are somewhat helpful if you know where to find them
Years ago, a trainer (Ghosth) used to spend several hours a day hanging in the training arena, and would hand hold new players until they had a basic grasp as to what was going on. I was one of them 20 years ago.

I'm getting more work, even I might have a go at a return.
Though I may need some input on a new Hotas set-up. Recommendations?

Virpil seems to be the preferred heir to the CH Products throne. Warthog is next. Expect to shell out upwards of $550 USD. Even entry level twisty sticks (Thrustmaster T16000) are around $150....3x what they sold for 2-3 years ago.

Even tho the T16000 is about triple what it was its still a good stick. The only cheaper stick you might find is a deal on Ebay or FB marketplace

If considering the Thrustmaster 16000 FCS, take the time and google Z-axis jitter concerning the 16000 before you plunk down the bucks. It seems to be a crap shoot as to whether you get a good one.
In the last hour, I just opened a 2nd ticket on Thrustmaster support for the issue. Got a new stick earlier in the year and it had the issue right out of the box. Support said it was a defective pot. Been complaints concerning that for at least a couple of years. The replacement that they sent me was solid and worked good from mid May until this week and now it's gone stupid with the same issue. This second stick has very low time on it and gentle use.
The first time around on the warranty went smooth, although it took a couple of weeks to complete. We shall see how cooperative they are this time. Still have a few months of warranty left. After that I'll be looking for advice for something else.
