Eric stands at the front of a classroom and points at the blown-up image of a famous photo. • He's pointing because he believes the photo has long concealed a lie. He's pointing because he believes the same photo can also be used to reveal something else.
• "Have we ever looked at this photo?" he asks the handful of people who have gathered to view his research, including a Creighton University expert on American history and a military historian. "Have we really looked at it?"

Disgusting.

The photo with the large American flag was staged later to make a photo-op. The original hoisting of the flag was with a very small American flag carried by one of the marines through the battle. They were the original marines and corpsman credited with raising the flag. The marines hoisting the large flag in this black and white photo-op are not all the original group who first made it to the top of Mt. Suribachi.

yup that guy is trying to find out something that has been known since the day the picture was taken.

This 'mystery' has even been revealed in the movies already, at least twice.

Wait! isn't that the same flag that was supposedly planted on the moon? That one also had black & white stars and stripes on it!
Was Niel Armstrong a marine at all?

It hard to dismiss this idea completely. The evidence is quite interesting and while I remain sceptical. It wouldn't surprise me at all. A mistake might have been made and you have to remember none of the men involved were thinking of their place in history. They were concentrating on surviving the day. If Bradley wasn't in the shot it's entirely possible he thought he was.
The jury is still out on this one.

So if its a fake did Japan win the war?

So if its a fake did Japan win the war?
Nah it's obvious the war was never fought. Look at the shadows and the flag movement. Obviously faked in a studio.

Did I say 2? I meant three, although the third actually makes the mistake of fictionalizing the event itself by creating a completely new character. I don't remember the name of the second. It was about war correspondents more than just about Iwo. The first controversy (there have been at least a few) was about posing the Marines. Rosenthal had misunderstood a line of questioning about the photograph. Three of the flag raisers also made a cameo appearance in Sands of Iwo Jima. The third one I mentioned would be The Outsider.
