The off hours are shocking. Large maps, few players makes for hours of chasing ghosts. What is a viable ww2 flight game to play during these times?
Cheers

I've been looking at WW2 online, it still has more players and can be run on just about any computer that can run AH, I'll get some more names for you :salute

Wow WW2OL still around? I hope it's improved from the horror it used to be. Totally messed up physics and graphics to die for (from laughter). Character animations resembled running monkeys and the one time I tried it, I went inside a building, climbed upstairs but couldn't find my way back down because the house was nothing but huge pixelated lego blocks from inside so you couldn't tell where the staircase started and wall ended.

I think they re-branded ww2online, flying there was not my cup of tea, tanking there was really good though.

I really digged their business idea. What could be cooler than combining fps with full air/tank sim. I had high hopes originally, especially when the devs were showcasing doppler effects and realistic sound delays (i.e. plane strafing in distance, sound arrives delayed to the player). But it was obvious that it was bound to fail right from the start when the servers crashed and stayed down from the load of players. I think that they had to recode much of the game and strip features away to be able to support even a fraction of the number of players they were promising for.

No it doesnt have "more players". It was never released on Steam even tho its been greenlit for over a year now, "I suspect it was all a scam". I quit for a final time a few months ago. There has been no upgrades in graphics, its still buggy, and the only time there is a 1/2 decent crowd is on Sunday. At one time, years ago, it was a great game but now its nothing but a small pvt club held together by a few "Builders" who poured tons of their own money into improving the game and from what I can tell got nothing back but there name on a town wall.
Theres a reason it can be run on just about any computer that can run AH,
its cause the graphics are 10 years dated.
I commiserate with you about AH, Im about to quit again myself, but WWll OL is not the answer.

The solutuon is simple:
Create a custom game for up the 32 players
FFA
Team deathmatch
Pick the smog 8 map..
Im telling you right now that's some fun stuff right there.

To populate such an aren during off hours, you would have to force palyers going there.

Screaming over 200 would help. Even as little as 8 players is still a blast.

I still play wwii online but I don't play it because of the flight model (sucks) I usually play the infantry role or tanks...... If ww2 online had the flight model of aces high that would be the number one game imo.

If not a different arena, then a smaller map with a Tank Town/Fighter Town. 20 people simply cannot have 'too' much fun on any of the current maps, really.

Living in Australia it is very hit and miss as to wether or not you can find a fight in our peak flying times. The best maps her (and i cant think of their propper names right now cause its 4 am and my head aint with it yet) are the tank/furball island map or the other tank town centralised maps that has tt in the middle and an airfield each. When those maps are on usually you can find a fight above them. As Fess said other wise 70% of time is spent chasing ghosts...
Oh and if HT or Skuzzy are reading this... ADVERTISE SOUTH OF THE EQUATOR! They could attract a ton of new customers that just dont know this game exists. Increase their profits and make it more fun then boring on this side of the world.

20 players is major fun on a small custom map like smog8 or a few others. All it takes is a littler persuasiveness to get players to switch to the custom arena.
-
A custom arena can be fun. especially 1 for all lol......its something like king of the hill except there are no rules.

Thanks.
I played WWIIOL for a couple of years and I do not think I will be gong back there. Last night I did ask on 200 if anyone wanted to go to the DA and teach me some stuff but no response at all. As Tracers said, those of us in Australia are lucky to see 50+ people on during our prime time and they are in maps capable of hiding 1000 players.
I don't think there is an easy fix to this other than to seek out other options and keep AH for weekend play.

I have been trying Il-2 Cliffs of Dover on Stream and liking it..........
also I do IRACING during off hours.

I never have a problem finding fights or things to bomb or things to defend or ships to sink.
Maybe add a bit of variety to your mission profiles.

WWIIOL is a horror. Not worth the hard drive space.
If you are looking for a quick fight off hours you could pick up one of the IL2 games... the multi-player can be fun but it won't have as many players... still, very small maps usually so it's not a problem to find a fight. Just keep in mind that some of the flight model changes can take getting used to and some of the social conventions held by the AH community do not apply.

I was interested in trying WW2OL:BE as well. The full combined arms style and supporting roles really appealed to me, feels like a cross between BF1942 and AH. Incorrect modeling does not bother me as much as buggy/inconsistent gameplay. After playing offline for a while to get a feel for the system, i decided to start an account. However, upon following the link to begin an account my PC threw up a warning stating that their website security certificate was out of date, which was a bit concerning. I have yet to start an account and have resolved not to until the problem is fixed. I can't get in touch with them, though, as there isn't a phone number and the forum/help tickets may only be submitted by registered players.
Keep this up, and I'm afraid I'll just have to return to AH and beg foregiveness for straying.

Thanks icepac - I guess I should have noted in my original post that I am interested in air to air combat. I know there are many other aspects to this game such as tanking / bombing etc but they simply do not interest me.

If you knew what kind of controversy Cornered Rat (the developer) raised when starting the game you wouldn't be surprised their certificates are not cared for. The product launch was full of hyperbole and assurance but fell flat on its back. They claimed to have 'phat pipes' to handle hundreds of thousands of simultaneous players and the server crashed at a few thousand. There was HUGE interest in WW2OL at launch time but they messed it up.

I quit playing WW2OL when the rules were changed to where you cannot capture a town unless an AO was given for it. I had fun going with a small group sneaking towns, but aftr that change I lost a lot of interest. I ended up out of boredom trying to see what buildings I can stuff vehicles into and even drove some off the cliffs of dover just to see what would happen. Even tried landing/takeoff from tops of buildings in brussels.
I wasted a lot of equipment doing that :t

Ah yeah ww2ol had the attrition aspect to it too. Must have made some sofa generals pretty unhappy! :D

If you want an answer from them you might have to E-mail a few different guys.
It was a great idea that fell flat on its face. Years ago I did have the most exciting moments in gaming I ever had while playing WW2OL. Now? Its Ghost Town filled with very few of the old players. They also have a bad habit of allowing personal attacks on players in the forums by others who happen to have given them a bunch of $$ free in their builders program. Its hard to tell who the bigger suckers are, the "builders" or the "Devs". If you can even call them "Devs" since nothing is ever developed.

Any idea how to get CoD to recognize that there is a joystick? Can't seem to get any help on this. Please? Thanks.

Did you go into Settings and attempt to map the joystick buttons /axis, or is the game simply not seeing your joystick period i.e. when you try to map a button or axis to an action in the game the game doesn't see the controller.
PM me if you wish for help.

I think that the answer is much-smaller fighting areas in off-peak hours. (Or better yet, somehow fighting areas that scale according to number of players.)
Smaller areas can be fun down to even just a several people playing.
That is how Air Warrior was with a tiny fraction of the number of players in Aces High even off peak. It was fun down to about 4 people playing. It's whole terrain map was the equivalent of about 1.5 sectors by 1.5 sectors.
