I'm a huge watch fanatic. I've recently start collecting watches. Anything from Seikos to Bulovas.
My very first (real) watch, besides the Batman and Spiderman watches, was a Seiko. Simple, battery operated, my grandmother got me for graduation. Simple and elegant.
I didn't really get into watches until I was flipping through the channels and saw an Invicta SHOPHQ special. I was intrigued so I checked it out. Man It was awesome.. I saw a watch I really wanted to get one day and just kind of put it in the back of my head.
Watches are incredible. The automatic, gravity driven watches are my favorites. Each and every piece is put together by hand. I can go on all day about watches.
My next watch, was my grandfathers retirement watch made by Bulova from International. He received it in the 80s and never wore it. It's in my watch case as a keepsake.
My 3rd watch for strictly for Prom. Made my guess, got it from JC Penny's for a decent price. I spent more on my watch than I did on my tux. LOL Nice black/silver face with purple outlines. Matched perfectly.
I've gotten 2 Invictas. I've got a 32mm case pro diver that's blue/gold. And my favorite. a 45mm Grand Diver. Gorgeous white/blue dial on a silver band. Automatic. Absolutely love it.
What watches do you guys have?
What's your dream watch?

Current watch: Galaxy note 2
-
Casio G-Shock solar-atomic. It was $80 when I got it, and worth every cent. The day I have to replace it is the day it takes a bullet.
-
had the casio altimeter watch until I broke it.
-
I like best Timex digital watches, like the Expedition line. I buy them for about $25, and they last decades. I love them! :aok
If I were as wealthy as Bill Gates, maybe I'd have a Rolex for the cache (maybe a Submariner, blue and gold) -- but maybe still a Timex! :D
-
Got my Omega Seamaster Professional back in 1994. Don't even consider wearing another watch.
-
The stylish casio wave ceptor. Solar power and sets itself from freaking radio waves. The ultimate lazy man's watch. I've had it eight years now, never changed the battery.

I was into Tag H's for a long time, and had several different models. What I had been after for years was a stainless Submariner, I'd wanted one since I was a kid, and got my first about 10 years ago now, back when the 50th anniversary edition came out, with the green bezel. I still just got the typical black bezel due to $, but I like it - there are far, far more expensive watches out there, but these are pretty much in the zone for me in terms of being expensive, but still tough and useful. I wanted the Gold Submariner with blue face badly Brooke, but the extra 20 thousand dollars for an already outrageous (over 5$k when I was in Dubai, and that was a screaming deal at the time) was more than I could swallow, or afford.
I would say the best watch I own however is my Citizen Skyhawk. For 700$ it blows any luxury aviation watch out of the water in terms of features and looks (IMO), I would recommend it over any Breitling or anything else in that department. I bought the Blue Angels eco drive titanium, and really like it.
These are my two favorite watches which I've kept for longer than a couple of years. As stated by somebody previously, the Omega Seamasters are an excellent value IMO as well. Luminox makes a great watch for 500$ or less, and the various GShocks are always a good value too IMO for a watch you don't need to care about a whole lot if it gets lost or broken.
I have pics around of both someplace, have to dig about in another PC.

a quick google search found the Skyhawk Blue Angels for about $350. What a fantastic looking watch I almost want to buy one.

One of my clients recently attended the 175th Patel Phillipe celebrations in Geneva a couple of months back.
This is the stuff you will want to look at a bit later in your collecting career. Always good to have goals.

if you don't wear a manual you might as well just use your cell phone
(I just buy old watch faces I like from the 60s/70s, they're less flashy 'everyday' watches, usually can be had for $20-40, and depending on the make can be pretty accurate and reliable - watches made in the Soviet Union during this period especially)
And you still get the satisfaction of winding it up every day and getting that chik-cha-chik-cha-chik-cha if it's very quiet

Z06 - the Titanium is around 800$ USD on Amazon still, but the stainless steel and other similar models can be found for 450$ or less, and the plastic strapped variants in the mid 300 range- IMO the Titanium isn't worth the extra $, and I would have bought the cheaper ones if they had been out at the time. Great watches, highly recommend, especially for pilots/outdoors/hiking/climbing types. Tons of great features for the cost.
Found pics - flying with a friend in the jumpseat a while back, got to sit at the controls and get the whole tour of what did what.

Curval - my companies attorney has a collection of fine watches, among them several Pateks - beautiful stuff, well, well out of my price range, but interesting to see nonetheless.
One of the cooler watches I've seen a co-worker of mine picked up in Iraq from a local Iraqi that had be contracted to work as a terp with Triple Canopy while doing PSD convoy work back when that all started in around 2004 or so. He was an x-Iraqi air force pilot, specifically the Mig25, and his entire squadron had been given a gift of Breitling watches (1980s vintage) with a Mig 25 Foxbat engraved on the back. He traded it for some USD (not much either). I really wanted that watch, and still do.

A Raymond Weil Tango :old:
My Mrs bought it me
When i found out how much it cost i went berserk, a year later, top end graphics card price :cry
I bought a Oris wind up ten years ago
My favorite was a crap one for $10 dollors i got super glue on it
I have just bought a 1959 restored fat boy razer Rodium :) (nothing to do with watches)

Yes, that one Z06 - neither stainless steel nor titanium, 1/2 the cost of the stainless and about 1/3 of the titaniums now, but looks just the same, is lighter, and still has the same gizmos.

it says its the stainless steel version. The place got some mixed reviews though so I'm not sure I'd risk buying from there anyway. It is a beautiful watch though.

This segues into an important topic. That site could likely be selling highly accurately made copies from China. Rolex is by far the most copied watch, by they'll copy anything. Some of the better Rolex Submariner and Masters are so close now that only a good jewler/watchsmith can tell once they pull it apart. The movement, weight, color, all of it is SO close until you get into the guts of the watch with some of the Rolex and other copies. They sell for close to 1000$ sometimes, for these "Swiss grade replicas".
The price you'll get for a stainless Skyhawk from Amazon or any reputable retailer is very rarely under 475$, most are in the 500$ range depending on the model. Like I said, for a non stainless/titanium, there ARE sub 400$ models, but they don't look at all like the picture from the link on that site.
Just like pocket knives, watches are something that are copied frequently and sold at what looks like a still expensive price, but a really "great" deal, and this is the warning bell in many cases.

That's a nice watch. I have the black stainless Skyhawk (JR3159-53E model). Bought it as a Christmas gift for myself when I got my Instrument rating. - Best watch I've ever owned.

It's just a quartz/digital watch, what's the difference going to be anyway? It's not going to be any different in either case from a $10 Timex
With a mechanical movement sure, but...

Got my Omega Seamaster Professional back in 1994. Don't even consider wearing another watch.
I have and even older Omega from the early 60's in solid 18K gold, uses a tuning fork to keep time and is battery powered! The silly thing hums at a high frequency which will keep you awake if you wear it to bed.
I also have a 1980 Mappins pocket watch,again solid 18K.
Both are kept in a safety deposit box to be handed down 1 day!
Personally I wont wear a watch but if I would I think I would get a Tag.

Very nice looking watch. I'm not a huge fan of that style band though. Just doesn't look as formal and elegant as I would like. I absolutely LOVE the citizen Nighthawk. the black on black watches are my favorite. :rock
Breitling Watches I'm also starting to get into. Very elegant, professional look. Of course, who doesn't like Audemars... Gorgeous look. Not so much the price tag though..
Any watch I get now a days HAS to be over 42mm case diameter. I have a small (34mm I think), and it just looks horrible on my wrist. Way too small. 44-47mm looks great on me.
This will probably be my next big investment. Gorgeous watch. $5,000. Probably towards the end of next summer.

A solid gold watch would be pretty heavy to wear. Are you sure it's not just plated? :)

The ONLY reason I don't like those watches, is the movement. Japanese movements don't tend to be very reliable and break fairly easily. IT's a great looking watch though!
-

Yes I'm sure, the omega is very heavy and it's one of the reasons I stopped wearing, that and the hum drove me crazy! My uncle gave it to me,it was worth quite a sum back in 72or 3 when I received it. My plan is to pass it on to my Grandson when I'm gone,he will also receive the pocket watch which is really heavy but it's not as noticeable as the wristwatch.
They dont put hallmarks and a gold rating on a plated watch, mine have both.
Funny story,I took the omega into a shop to see why it quit, the owner said the battery was likely dead.I had no idea it had a battery, then he proceeded to open the watch and write down some numbers and made a phone call.
After he got off the phone he asked me if I was my uncle, called him by name,I said no,and he said well it's not reported stolen and where did I get it! I told him I was given the watch so he recorded me as the new owner and proceeded to tell that it was very valueable and I should take great care of it. This is when I found out it was solid 18K gold and it's worth back then was more than a new car! Well most normal cars..... :D
So yes both are solid gold, the pocket watch was given to me by my wife....

I care less about watches, OK I lie. I remember my first watch and being a pilot and all that anal pilot thing I like my watches' to be accurate. My pilot ground school guy was an old school a navigator and he advised that you monitored your watch and if it wasn't accurate you set it in a way that it became accurate on average.
Lately here on this side of the pond there has been published a magazine that each month produced a watch based on a historic military watch. On my wrist right now is a copy of an RAF watch. I also have a Luftwaffe WW2 watch, which is huge and fashionable and a US Army Vietnam era watch which according to various websites hardly ever got to frontline soldiers.
What a surprise that!
Edit: While I was typing this, of all things a commercial appeared. A P51 and my all time favourite aeroplane an F4u Corsair appeared on TV. It's a Breitling commercial. They are both flying towards 'Anna' except there are two Annas. Naturally our heroes are wearing Breitlings. Well I can't afford a Breitling but my wife's name is Ann and she's a blonde AND she bought me a pilot watch.
That is weird.

I found this watch a while ago by chance but have no idea where to get it. It's a planetary watch, and shows the positions of the 6 planets closest to the sun (all the ones visible from earth with the naked eye).

Oh? Could you post pictures or links to these replicas? That sounds really interesting..
And brietlings are just gorgeous watches. I love the way they're made.

Where do you get those replicas.

I found a site that sells VERY nice military era watches. Anywhere from the early 40s to the 70s.
ALL AUTHENTIC.
Not a beginners watch.. But would be a nice addition to any collection.
I REALLY like the 6th one down. WW2 Oyster Recorda. Made by Rolex.

I live vicariously through my wife's Rolex which was her mom's watch and has to be at least 30 years old. It's a simple gold thing. For myself my criteria is that it cost less than 30 dollars as I am a watch DESTROYER. My longest survivor is an Armstrong digital with all the identifying marks worn out and only a half inch of Velcro left on the band. My watches usually get ripped from my wrist when they snag on some piece of building material, the pin holes for the band get torn or they get stomped on or buried in gravel or there seal goes, like that.
-
You can collect rare watches, if you have lots and lots of cash...or perhaps invest in a "watch fund".

If I had that kinda cash I'd have a 1st rate WW2 collection. That said I understand a guy who likes a nice watch.
-
This thread made me pull my old trusty fossil watch out and change the battery so I can use it again. This stupid thing has 2 different batteries and 3 batteries in total ( 2 of one type and 1 of another) for a total cost of $21 to change all the batteries. What happened to just having 1 battery in the watch?
Nothing special but it does tell time.

I see quite a few mentions of Rolexes in this thread now. Rolexes aren't really "for" collecting, they are to be worn....and frankly, they don't keep very good time in my experience. I have two and they both suck at telling time. They look nice but that's about it. I had a Timex when I was 12 that kept better time.

Rolex, if taken care of well, tend to have pretty accurate movements. .001 second if I remember correctly.

They need serviced if they aren't keeping time. When was the last time you had it done? A Rolex (or any premium watch) is just like a sports car, boat or plane. You have to run them thru the shop on a regular basis. They are precision machinery, not an electronic heartbeat.

Very nice Baldy! I have been wanting a tag for some time now,the wife said she would get me 1 but I never wear watches so she thinks it would be a waste!
I stopped wearing watches when I had a cheap watch tore from my arm at work one day,I sore I would never wear 1 again after that! I dont work anymore so it might be safe to consider wearing 1 again!.... :o

Hehe. My ex bought mine for me when we were together. I had no idea what it had cost her until after we'd split up.
I've worn mine every day for around 15 years now. I really like it. It's a bit heavy so you definitely know you're wearing it.
The downside is when it needs a new battery you have to bring it to a jeweler's shop and many won't even attempt to open it up so replacing the battery ends up costing around $35-40. The nice thing is you get a few weeks warning that the battery is dying. The second hand stops clicking off seconds and switches to five then ten second increments over time to save battery life until you get it in to the shop.

I don't know much about the battery movements in Tags, Is it like a standard battery found in most watches? If that's the case, you can by a battery replacement kit for fairly cheap and just buy 5-10 batteries at a time and do it all yourself, it's pretty interesting being able to look inside a watch, even if it is battery operated. BUT the only downside is, if you break it, you're screwed. I don't think warranty will cover it if YOU decide to tamper with it. You'll have to read your manual.
Out of stock, but an example of the kit.
http://www.mdbattery.com/se-professional-watch-repair-tool-kit-13-piece-set-jt6222.html?gclid=CM-43q37z8ICFYhafgodUVIAug
And I'm pretty sure this is the battery type (After a quick search) You'll have to double check.

Jolly,
I dont think it would be wise to open a 2 or 3 thousand dollar watch when most jewelers will do it for the cost of the battery.
The last thing you want to do is put a scratch on the back or watch case.

Do you have a cheap watch to practice on? It's a great skill to have to be honest. I've even worked on mechanical watches. You're right though, I don't suggest doing that for the first time on a TAG.
Single batteries cost less than $1 in most cases. It costs AT LEAST $20 to replace a battery at a professional jeweler.

I think I've only had to replace the battery once in 15 years. That was 5-6 years ago so it's probably going to be due again sometime soon.
I think there might be more to changing the battery here than meets the eye. The watch is guaranteed waterproof to 200 meters and I suspect that's why a lot of jewelers won't even open it. If it was one of my old Seikos that now sit abandoned in my closet I'd probably do it myself. In this case I'm willing to bring it in.

I certainly would Baldy,I`ve opened and replaced watch batteries in cheap watches before but I would never attempt to open something like a tag or rolex!
The waterproof models usually have an Oring gasket that can be pinched and if the watch is gold, well if you look at it too hard it gets a scratch!
It`s well worth having the battery changed and the watch serviced every so often. I expect both of mine to require servicing and the omega will likely need a new battery as well.
