Title: Networking Hell
Post by: Mar on December 07, 2014, 02:13:20 PM
:(

I need help with some very basic crap. I don't know where to start or where to look.

Problem 1: I cannot get my wife's Winblows 8.1 laptop to connect to my Win7 created Homegroup. It says [my user] on [my computer] has created a homegroup, click join to join this homegroup. Then it asks for the password, I enter it, then sit and wait for 30 seconds only for it to report that it no longer detects the homegroup, and goes right back to the page that says I can join it.

Problem 1.2: I can't connect to the laptop to my rig (or vice versa) by going to Network>[laptop]. It asks for a username and password. I was able to before without this, but I did wipe and restore the laptop recently and did the "upgrade" to 8.1, so I'm sure that this is something I'm simply not familiar with.

Problem 2: I am trying my hand at streaming to twitch and I cannot for the life of me get the streaming software to connect. I'm trying both Open Broadcast Software and XSplit Broadcaster. OBS worked once, then never again. It was giving me trouble before it worked the one time like this, so I tried manually adding an exception to the firewall (despite the firewall not reporting it was blocking this new program) and it worked, once. I stopped the stream to change something and it never worked again. I tried shutting off the firewall, Windows Defender, and Threatfire. Still does not work.

Problem 3: I don't know if this is on my end at all, but the lack being able to stream for God knows what reason makes me think that it might be related to not being able to play Elite: Dangerous. Since Thursday the game client refuses to connect to the servers. I can login and launch no problem. Fixing the streaming problem might fix this. Thought I'd mention it in case it gave you guys any ideas.

What am I missing?

Have you tried rebooting your switch/router? That's the first place to start. As for the homegroup you're not alone with the problems. Other people have got it working by leaving homegroup on all computers. Then create a new homegroup using the control panel and rejoin all computers using the new password.

PS: Make sure both computers you want to join to the same group are on and connected when you attempt to join the homegroup. Windows 8 should automatically detect the homegroup in the 7 and suggest you to join it: http://helpdeskgeek.com/windows-8/join-windows-7-homegroup-from-windows-8/

After upgrading from 8 to 8.1, check if there's new drivers for the networking cards.

Fixed the streaming, the game, and the homegroup. What is the matter with me?

Now I feel stupid. Really, really stupid.
