Ok folks, I really need help with figuring this one out: I am using track-IR 5 and really have poor six o'clock view in certain planes, as all I see when I turn my head to look back is the pilot seat, especially in the F4U/F6F family of planes.... Is there a way to better see one's six o'clock view, without having to lean forward so much while using track-IR? The excessive leaning forward and head turning in order to see an un-obstructed six o'clock view is really cumbersome. Can one somehow get a good six o'clock view, without this excessive forward leaning? The head turning is not too bothersome to me, but if I can just avoid the excessive forward leaning.... I have read elsewhere that somehow the head position can be changed in order to get a better FOV, thus giving you a better, less burdensome, six o'clock look with Track IR? I would greatly appreciated an in-depth answer as how to do this. Thank you in advance.

try resetting your default head position when centered. This helped me a lot. Center your Track IR then Pause it. Move your head up as much as you can handle by using the page up key and then hit F10 key to save. Then unpause your Track IR.
See if that helps. It helped me out some. Also, if you bump up your spped or smooth some it will help with you having to turn/move so much. It will take some tweaking until you get it worked out.
-
If you scale the forward/back movement you can increase the pilot's head moving with less actual movement.
If you lean back first, then center your view while leaning back, you won't have to lean forward so much.

In the track IR profile you use, reduce the axis down to yaw and pitch only. Un-check everything else in that row.

In the game check track IR relative view. Now you will inherit all of your saved head positions including your 6 view. If you leave any of those checked you will disable inheriting the saved head positions.
If you have never setup your views and are trying this, now is a good time to set them. Some fighters even have rotten 6 views when setting them with the view adjustment keys.
Many of these air craft had mirrors. HiTech explained he was not modeling mirrors because it would give an advantage to players with the strongest systems. Maybe with AH3 that will be a moot point.

think what you want is use a button on your stick to look back then use trakir to move side to side.

I say speed up the curves a touch and give your brain time to rewire the body movements you have to make. Trying out some other profiles might be in order too.
-
First save what you have then make a new file just in case you go backwards.
Take advantage of the 3D head display in trackir.
The X axis is one you want to work on. Triton pointed out using the speed slider will give you a bit of a boost. Try that then go back and work on your curves trying different angles and work the speed curve with that.
Trackir is very flexible and powerful. Just jump in trying different things till you have a feel for it.
Try turning off different axis to see what they do.
You should be able to match any view you can get with the standard hat switch views.

This is what you need to do and you will have your old hat switch 6 oclock view but the rest of views will be normal trackir views.

Thanks to all for the replies and, specifically, thank you, Bustr: I will definitely try your suggestion. Since I am really new, I would love to know how you saved your six o'clock views via the F10 function. I do not have any views mapped to any of my hat switches, since I want to strictly rely on track-IR for my views. My hat switches are strictly being used now for other flight functions (trimming, etc..). I guess what I am asking is, how do I setup reasonable six o'clock views, if I am not mapping anything to the hat switches? Is it just a matter of using the in-flight page up/page down, forward/backward head movement while looking back, then hitting F10 to save? I know that I would need to do this chore for every plane, but are there already saved six o'clock files that others have and are willing to share for specific planes? I know that much of this depends on personal customizations, but for the past three weeks since I have started this game, all I have been doing is setting up things and, at this point, I really want to focus on competitive flying now! Thanks again to all. Please share your TIR-5 profile if you are willing! :salute

This definitely works. But there is a downside. I fly the Bf-109 a lot, and the beauty of trackIR is being able to move my ahead around those bars to get better views on the target. If you disable the X,Y and Z, you lose the ability to move around the bars... So, I'm trying to make due with everything on except roll. It... It sucks, for now. I guess I have to try to get used to it...

Bloo planes are PITA with trak IR. One of the reasons I don't fly them. You can optimise it as per above but IMO you cannot reproduce the ease of access to a hat driven 6 view with trak IR. It's possible of course to get to the view ....just not easy to assume the right head position as quickly.

Pelota,
Spawn on the runway. Hold the key(s) to get the view direction you want. Then using the Page up\down and the four arrow keys. Move that view direction around until you have the best you can get. Then hit F10 to save. If you don't like it when you test it, use the same keys again or hit the Home key to return it to it's default position to start over. This is good if you move your gunsight view up and down a lot which is your default forward view.
With some aircraft you will have one view direction that will not respond to moving it around. Something about Windows and too many keys being held down at the same time. Other Players can tell you how they get around that. I've always borrowed the line in question from another plane's hps file and copied it over the view position line of the plane's hps file I'm working on. I mapped the lines below to the keys.
It will take awhile for all of your fighters and bombers if this is your first time. Or in the past some players have been kind enough to share their <plane.hps> files with others. You can set a plane's views back to the default by deleting that plane's hps file from the planes folder. If you are into working on things in long hand, here is the contents of the hps file mapped out for you. You can edit them in notepad. You cannot hurt anything making changes to these files. Just delete them if you get in trouble and they will be regenerated.

There is one simple checkbox that greatly helps this problem.
On your YAW settings, check the box that says "LIMIT". This will stop your view at 180 degrees. (dead six)
Now set your "X" scaling a little steep. MY 3rd point is set at 15 True head movement, and 10 head speed. points 1 and 2 are equally spaced to create a gentle curve to point 3. points 4 and 5 are flatlined at 10.
with these settings, turning your head just 45 degrees gives you a dead six view, and moving your head side to side in the same direction lets you look around your seat.
ALSO, uncheck "ROLL" it's useless.
-
To work on the starting head position, turn off trackir then use the arrow keys and the page up and down keys to get a good starting head position then hit F10 to save that head position. Now turn back on trackir and see the difference.

Sorry, but this is just crazy talk and defeats the whole purpose of TRACK IR. Learn to set up a good profile, tweak it, and you can disregard your hat switches for good.

Let's just call it an alternate preference. Also using the hat switches changes the TIR from view control to head position movement so some people like to have both set up.

No it doesn't. Just uses TR as it originaly was shipped for games years ago as a mouse pan device. Naturalpoint was not developed for games in the beginning. It was a way to allow the disabled to use their head as their mouse. I've tried both ways and I don't like remembering to contort my body when I want to see my maximum possible 6 view by turning my head in that direction. I've been using TR since the beginning and went through AW using the hat switch.
Our key press view system allows us to contort the view origin in ways no human could physically strapped into their seat. Especially for the instant button press 6 view. Until HiTech relents and gives us a mirror, 2-axis inheriting the hps file gives a superior 6 view with less hassle faster.

IN THE BEGINING it may have been a virtual mouse control.. as you said "years ago" but advances in its capabilities have made it perfect for gaming. IF you set up a good profile, there is no reason to "contort" your body in anyway to look around, even a full 360 degree pan. My head never moves more than if I was just looking from one side of my screen to the other, and im able to follow a con without ever losing sight of him for a second. it's all in how you setup your profile.
-
Have to agree. Whereas I AH I still use the cooliehat, it is much more 'natural' to turn your head. I will always prefer to use the hat for trim (as it was intended), but in AH the hat does seem better suited for views. Because AH does not have a clickable cockpit 75% of the benefit of TIR is missing anyway. Yet, I don't have to do body contortions with TIR in any game.
-
when you guys are flying with track IR how do you shoot? or rather where do you look?
I normally page up in a turn and toggle zoom on slightly longer shots.
-
If you lower your head and recenter TIR then you'll be looking above the sight when you sit normally.
-
Im usually looking at the thing in front of me that's about to burst into flames ;)
Seriously though.. ive seen videos of guys adjusting their head position above or below the sight.. I don't understand that way of aiming at all. does it have something to do with loaded firing ? I try to predict where he's gonna be and shoot there. keeping normal view. I have the slider on my x52 throttle mapped to zoom in on the sight, and the pinky switch set to external zoom. so for long straight shots (on a runstang) 2 quick clicks has my sight filled with his plane. im curious though, why would you want to be looking over your sight ?
-
when you guys are flying with track IR how do you shoot? or rather where do you look?
I normally page up in a turn and toggle zoom on slightly longer shots.
Moving your head up or down has the same effect as page up & down
-
Naughty you did that film only with one plane, an F4u. How does it work out with the C202\205, F6f, Hurri, P47D11, F4f, FM2, and IL2? The best you can get with the Hurri and F6f requires placing the back of your head against the top of the windscreen and only just gives you a look around the top of the head rest. I've modified my profile and the contortion is not worth the time waste performing ACM. All of those planes except the IL2 had mirrors due to the sucky rear view. The IL2, you can furball in it if you set views for the hps and use 2-axis. Other wise you will not be able to contort enough to see out the back up as you turn into your chaser or hold a side view on zoom hunting down your wing tip looking for tanks.
You can throw away the past for whatever juices your jizz today, until you rediscover it in the future, and try to tell everyone how wonderful your discovery of the past is. I doubt poop 20 years ago smells any different than your special poop smells today. The difference is, it's your very own special poop. Special iss "my precious"......

Bustr: thanks again for all your help, sir. Your recommendation seems to have done the trick! I now have a clearer view of the six o'clock view and actually, for the first time, fly competitively! I want to deeply thank all who have contributed to this thread. :salute
-
IN THE BEGINING it may have been a virtual mouse control.. as you said "years ago" but advances in its capabilities have made it perfect for gaming. IF you set up a good profile, there is no reason to "contort" your body in anyway to look around, even a full 360 degree pan. My head never moves more than if I was just looking from one side of my screen to the other, and im able to follow a con without ever losing sight of him for a second. it's all in how you setup your profile.
Naughty, would you be willing to send your profile? I've been trying ceaselessly to get mine set up, and can either get great 6 views with bustrs system but cannot see around the bars in my Bf-109, or I can clear the bars just fine but cannot see behind me.
-
Please post it here naughty. I collect profiles trying to fine tune one for myself.
-
There's really nothing special about my profile other than some minor adjustments and use of the "LIMIT" option. but I've tweaked it to fit how I fly, what I fly most, where I look the most, my screen size, where I sit relative to the screen ect.. when seting up your profile, it's best to start with the default, and then adjust 1 axis at a time. what you want to shoot for is a happy medium between excessive head movement, and a nice null zone. my screen is 26" wide, so I like that when my nose is pointing at the edge of the screen, I have a dead six view. Nose pointing at top of screen gives me straight up view. ect..ect..
I don't have a file hosting account anywhere right now, and don't feel like setting one up at the moment, so here's the text. Just create a new profile, then open it up in wordpad and copy/paste the following in it.

Pelota,
On your trackIR main screen, in the Motion Adjustment Box, make sure "True View" is checked. True view makes your virtual head movements relative to the way your virtual head is facing. Other wise when you turn your head around the movement will all be reversed from what seems intuitive and when you're trying to move your head away from the seat back, you will actually get closer.
So check that box and see if that's what's causing you to not be able to pull away from the seat. Good luck.
-
If you lower your head and recenter TIR then you'll be looking above the sight when you sit normally.
IDK why people don't do this more often!!!!! You would be surprised how often you kill when you're not looking "through" the gunsights!
Only when im lining up to strafe ACk I "Look INTO" my gunsight! or dead 6 shots
As for the View. you're gonna have to fiddle with profile settings. I don't recommend disabling any of the axis because that defeats the purpose of TrackIR. I don't have to "LEAN" I just turn my neck and that 1" of offset will lean my pilot around the seat. GOOD LUCK, you will find the perfect setting! Just keep tweaking.
..just remembered something! I think the most important axis to deal with in this situation is the Z axis turn it up a lil. because if you look left+ lean forward toward your moniter with the right sensitivity on the Z axis your(pilots) face should be touching the glass..if you keep looking harder left you should be able to see the back left elevator!
-
I think the approach Bustr wrote about is the fastest path to usability. I'm thankful for it. How many people have bought the TrackIR and then quietly put it in a drawer a few weeks later?
I appreciate what has been written here, great knowledge. Because of that, I'll "keep on tweaking" one AH aircraft so I can master the TIR programming interface. I got a 'C' in high school Trig.
Great discussion.
:salute

BREAKTHROUGH!!!
Gentlemen, I have made a HUGE breakthrough with TrackIR.
I'm using TrackIR 5 with the proclip. I've used the scaling suggested by others, and still couldn't get a six view. I tried bustr's way, but couldn't look around the bars in the Bf-109 cockpit the way I wanted to. Well, on a hunch, I tried something out today. Bustr's mention of Trueview was the key. I had trueview turned on, and in the TrackIR profiler, a six view was easy and the head moved the way I thought it would, but ingame, it just wasn't "right". I turned OFF trueview, left X,Y, and Z on, as well as pitch and yaw, and jumped back into the game, and it was like the clouds opened up, and everything worked perfectly! It seems the AH view system is completely backward when it comes to TrackIR.

Wow. Track ir looks complicated. Was thinking of getting one but this thread has me thinking otherwise...
How long did you guys have to mess with it until it was usable?

It is usable right out of the box. The trick is learning how to use it. :devil
It is different than the hat views and so you have to retrain yourself, much like switching from a twisty stick to rudder pedals.
-
Sorry, but this is just crazy talk and defeats the whole purpose of TRACK IR. Learn to set up a good profile, tweak it, and you can disregard your hat switches for good.
:)
-
All i have on my stick is Pause and centre?.
I can look at my 6 with little movement?
All those figures?.
-

It's not complicated. The trick is finding a profile or tweaking one to suit you. Once you find something that feels like it works, it's just fine tuning from there.
-
Serenity, if you notice on the profile text I posted, True view is disabled also. it was one of the first thing I noticed when I started using TIR.
-
I started with the bunch Fugi had posted long ago, picked one of those that was close to something that worked for me and then tweaked it to what I liked. I've been tweaking it ever since. That's kind of an ongoing thing with TIR in my experience! I did NOT have Trueview checked for the longest time but eventually found it counter-intuitive to look back and lean the opposite way. Leaning right to look over my left shoulder wasn't getting it. I now have it checked and that works better for me.
The old saying YMMV pretty much fits perfectly with TIR! What works for me might not work for you or the next ten guys. It's all about personal preference but the good news is the program is hyper-configurable. You can decide what axii to use--or not. You can tweak each of those to your heart's content in tiny increments.
It DOES take a while to get used to. Once you've gotten used to it you won't really go back. I'm glad Vudu finally got one. Watching his epic videos was driving me nuts twisting my head trying to get the views to change with him using his hat switch hehe.

Took me all of fifteen minutes to conclude that my old TrackIR 3 was indispensable. Replaced it with a 5 and the LED ProClip and I'm still flying with "my head on a swivel."

LOL glad im not the only one who does that ! every video I watch.. I find myself turning my head to look around, becomes so natural, my daughter laughs her bellybutton off at me !

This is almost right. The Game has a toggle switch for a similar function in the view options. One flips the game, one flips the TrackIR. So you have to set them so they are not cancelling each other. :salute
-
Pelota,
Stick with it, I have had mine for over a month or so now and like it, at first was very frustrating I still auger way more than when I was using just the hat switches but they are getting fewer and fewer, ask Fugitive for the TrkIR profiles he has collected I ran through them all and eventually just tweaked one to my liking, like Randy said it is very flexible and one could probably spend a lot of time tweaking everything but like you said there is a point were you just want to play the game.
I do not use any hat switches at this time, and Bruv you can just look at your target then use the zoom button like normal for the long shots.
Side note: Wife put up a Christmas Tree behind were I play and the lights were playing havoc with the IR sensor so be mindful of any lighting that could act as an IR source in your area.
-
I collect profiles. 8 on vacation but will post a link Sunday when I get.

Did you check "trackir relative views" in game. It felt all backwards till I did that

I did not find that option at all. But since unchecking real head movement in TrackIR seems to do the same as checking it ingame, it worked out.

Its possible it provided the same result.
Fwiw, that setting is in the video section and was mentioned near the start of this thread.
