Title: Netflix: Marco Polo
Post by: Gman on December 13, 2014, 06:37:59 PM
Just finished watching the entire season that was released yesterday.  Fantastic stuff.

It's incredible to me to think where Netflix was just a handful of years ago, a mail order DVD company that sent out PITA junk mail to me every 2 weeks.  Then, it became "the" thing to do to waste time on the net, a great collection of old and new TV shows and Movies, all streaming instantly in HD at your fingertips.

Then, in the last couple of years, they really got into producing their own stuff, much in the way AMC did, after years of playing old movies with 500 commercials and then coming out with Breaking Bad and Walking Dead et al.

Netflix has really shot the moon IMO with the last few in house productions, again, it amazes me how rapidly they developed the capability of making their own programs, and not just regular stuff, really, really great stuff in league with HBO and all the heavy hitters.  House of Cards, that women's jail one (not my thing, but the missus loves that crap), and now Marco Polo.

Marco Polo: Highly recommended, some great history built into a great story with superb scope and cinematography.  It reminds me of Rome from HBO in many ways, less humor, but everything else amped up instead.  It's far from my favorite era or region of history, but that's great IMO, as it's been BTDT in terms of all the other programs recently because of this, and Macro Polo's adapted story here is very well done.

I've been reading that Netflix is about to ink the deal to bring Stargate: Universe, back from the dead, and develop the rest of that abbreviated/cancelled storyline for release in 2015 sometime.  I hope they use the same people they've used when producing House of Cards or Marco Polo, as it's been excellent quality entertainment so far.

Lets see if all this growth will eat up the company from inside and it will become just another BS large corporation.

I really want to start watching Marco Polo this week. Unfortunately it will be one I have to watch without my wife, don't think she will get into it, but maybe.  The other Netflix show we have been watching is The 100, I'm not that big into space sci-fi, but I dont mind this show.

I too thought it was great. Yet it has gotten bad reviews and from what I can tell a 2nd season isnt assured.

Yep, the reviews have panned it. For a 70 million $ production, I guess they wanted more.  I liked it, mainly because it was different.  A lot different.  Different subject matter done in a different way.  I think it'll be one of those things that develops a cult following eventually, especially if it isn't renewed for season 2.  That might be for the best almost.  It's a very unique piece of work.

The last episode is what closed the deal for me, it was fantastic, especially the last 20 minutes.

I wouldn't have clicked on it had it not been for this thread.  As a fan of the Mongols (they were terrible, awful and horrific to be sure) I'm in the middle of a binge and 5 episodes in.

If you have the time for a podcast or two it's worth checking out Dan Carlin's Hardcore History Wrath of the Khans http://www.dancarlin.com/hardcore-history-series/

They'll shine some light on how what you see on the series is toned waaaaay down.  The rest of them are quite good as well (episode 40 and up) with Blueprint for Armageddom being my current road trip accompaniment as I await the next in the series.  They're free for download or on your iPad/iPod/iPhone podcast app.

Finished watching whole thing last night.  Thanks for the recommendation.   :rock

I hope that there is another session.

It is sad, but I should say that I got lost a lot in the historical references.  My wife, who had taken a couple of general survey courses on Asia in college (30+ years ago) did much better than I and thinks that the history was accurate expect for possibly Marco Polo!  Seems that most serous scholars wonder if in fact he ever went to China.  (So it looks as if there was a Marco Polo, but not one in China).

We tried to watch it, but had to give up.  Seems it was shot at midnight, outside, under cloudy skies using a candle to light the scenes.  There were simply too many times we asked each other, "Can you see what is going on?"  We finally gave up.

Seems like it would have been a good one too, from what we could see.
