I'm looking to retire within a year and am considering both NC (Rutherfordton-Forest City) and SC (Spartanburg-Rock Hill)
General info points to South Carolina as being a bit cheaper on taxes/gas vs NC. Any helpful info from either side of the state line would be much appreciated.
Thanks :aok

As bad as it sounds, Ive spent a large amount of time in the area where Deliverance was filmed. I've shot the same rapids in a canoe many a time, and spent many hours fishing along the Chatooga River.
So far Ive never heard a banjo in those woods, nor anyone squeeling like a pig!

Got in-laws that live on lake wateree (north end of Camden).
Lake is really nice, good fishing. Based on the way the local power company has been forced to sell off it's land around the lake, there are some good deals from time to time down there.
Not far from rock hill. In fact we turn on to 21 at Rock Hill on the way to their house.

from a trucking point of view both fuels are cheaper on the south side.

I would be looking at a more country setting in either state compared to rock hill. IMHO

My mom retired to Traveler's Rest and lovwes it. Lower taxes. Great standard of living. Mountains, lakes, rivers. Upland seems to have a better draw over The Piedmont.

Hmmmm......considering it is part of the piedmont.....

Columbus NC here Max...same county as Boxboy. 20 miles north of Spartanburg, 20 miles west of Forest City.
Property taxes are generally a little higher in western NC, than upstate SC on based equally valued property. However no retail taxes on food in Landrum SC for example. Gasoline prices are also generally 20-40 cents cheaper in SC.
Western Rutherford and Eastern Polk county are seeing real estate prices spike due to a huge Equestrian center being developed in the area. The "Donald" has a big hand in that development, so property is being purchased right and left.
