Title: Wiki "Under Repair"
Post by: Scca on December 19, 2014, 08:18:04 AM
For a few days now when I click the wiki link it says "Under Repair".  If it is, cool, but I thought it was worth a mention if this was a default page or something.

Skuzzy found a lot of issues with it. So he has taken it down  until some fixes can be found.

26th of December 2014 and still down, wonder what the issues were, never a problem with the 113th Wiki page.

There are over 10,000 page not found errors in the Wiki.  It will take several months to fix.

I think they been working on it for several months, first saw that there was an issue several months ago and I think they tried to fix it while leaving it up and available.   But I guess that's not a workable solution anymore.  Don't know how accurate that 'several months" estimate to fix is?  I think Skuzzy is the only resource that supports the Wiki.

The useful links page under "Community" has couple of dead links listed as a side note.

Any update on wiki fix?

It went down shortly after I first started playing offline; I got to read a little but not much. By the time I joined the MA, it was "Under Repair" and has been since.

I haven't seen any mention of it on the page or in the forums while I have been browsing around. Maybe there was some kind of official announcement and I missed out on it.  :noid

Anyway, that was a HUGE help for new sticks like myself. I have seen some of the other charts and members' own work-ups and comparisons but nothing as comprehensive as the Wiki.

Hi-tech, please, BRING BACK THE WIKI!  :rock

They have over 10,000 error pages they need to fix first. In the meantime they are working on AH3. So bear with them.

Wow, no kidding. Everything was smooth a few months ago, it seemed.

What exactly is meant by "error pages"?

Skuzzy, it's my understanding you're probably the only one working on the wiki.

Instead of just asking when it will be up, it may be of some importance to hear that I have dabble a but with programming (C++, Java, HTML/CSS, Javascript) and I'd like to lend a hand if you'd allow it.

If you're interested, PM details or just reply on here. I'll keep an eye out.

On the links page several of the links are dead.  That page should be taken down till it is fixed.  Bad links makes a site look like the site is dying to new visitor.

From what has been posted the wiki is so messed up that it looks like it would be easier to trash it and just start over.

Knowing that HTC looks to keep its company small it seems that they have hit that point where they can only get so much done. Rebuilding the wiki might now be a "wish list" item. Like so many of the things with this game the wiki was players administrated. Skuzzy set it up, and I think "Murdr" was the main administrator for it. The rest was player base input.... as that is what a wiki is anyway.

My other post was a bit of a tongue in cheek "joke" however making a new wiki may be a job for those that wish to have a wiki.

It is this simple.  With all the errors in the Wiki, Google had stopped crawling our WEB site.  It killed any chance of finding us when you searched using Google.

Even if we can fix everything, there is nothing to prevent the Wiki from being corrupted again, unless we close it off to outside editing, which defeats the purpose of having a Wiki.

It will not be back any time soon.

Is it a big problem to delete any reference to wiki and the links page with broken links on the HTC website?  No information is better than broken pages.

It just looks so bad to new players.  There might even be a trust issue.  "Do I want to send money to a company that can't keep their website working?"

Not being critical here just offering what it looks like from the outside of HTC

Wiki's have given way to other methods of communication, I think.  Wikipedia being the exception.  It remains the new poor man's Britannica.

YouTubes are a better way to convey 'how to' information these days.  Especially for the folks coming up behind us old ones.  TechSmith has some very good products for creating how-to videos.

I would love to see a few updated ones created and sponsored by HiTech after AH3 is released:

Film Editor
Basic Flight
Basic ACM
Terrain Editor
Mission Editor
The Art of Skinning
How an aircraft (the Beaufighter X for example) goes from concept to production  :devil

Ok, true enough.

But the wiki was user-run. Why not release the information back to the user base and allow those capable and willing to rebuild in a better structure; instead of a wiki, why not link to a hosted Web page? Cost incurred for hosting would be minimal (paid hosting vs "free" ad-driven hosting) and anyone that would want the info available again could donate per annum until a sustainment solution is met. For the numbers-oriented, WordPress hosting plans are $99-$299 a year; GoDaddy is $72 a year for one of their packages. List is noninclusive.

On the Wiki subject, and I'm not being critical here, but aren't all changes on a Wiki subject to community or administrator approval, so someone can't just arbitrarily just change something and then post it? Never created or modified a Wiki before but I really use them. The encyclopedic layout of information is in a better format for, say, mobile users that are wanting to do some reading while out and about before doing some flying. Again, not being critical but I don't understand how users were able to mangle up the Wiki so badly, it has to be taken down. I'm only curious because if this is done again, mitigating measures need to be taken. It was very beneficial to me and other new players can greatly benefit from it too.

So, just my two cents on it.

There used to be plane info on the main page. It looks like that was replaced with the AH Wiki. If the old pages are stored somewhere maybe we'll see those again.

I think you are talking about two different things.

The Wiki or our WEB site?  If broken links exist on the WEB site, please send them to me.

Works for me, dropped me out of the game, loaded IE, and opened the "support/help" page on the main web site.

Why not allow the AH community to voluntarily clean up the links on the Wiki page? The intent of Wiki is open source editing.

That was an option. Nobody stepped up.

Are you volunteering now or did you mean somebody else should do it?

that's not 100% true, I offered and received no response from AH.   I built and maintained the wiki for the 113th.

We had two people respond.  There is no way the Wiki can stay online with all those errors for the months and months it would take to fix it.

It is hurting our ranking at Google.  That is just the way it is.

I just did 5 different searches on Google looking for WWII flight games, wwII aircraft combat simulation, WWII Games, Flight Simulation, and Aircraft Combat Simulation :  Aces High is never returned for any of them so by taking down the wiki what has improved in  Google search?  One might make the case that the fee charged for the services provided by HiTech Creations included the BBS and Wiki.  At least according to the first sentence of the TOS.

The issue with Google is most likely due to the errors generated by the wiki pages. Google will not refer you to a site that has those errors. Now that the wiki is down eventually Google will add the HTC sites back to the top of the list.

As far as the TOS, it says you get the game and a message board. Nothing about a wiki which was added much later.

To repair the wiki you have to understand the code. It's not just going through and editing a page like you do when you setup the squad page. I looked into it and it is a whole different language.

I understand that, but the wiki site is down and not included in the google search , google doesn't see it. As for the TSO even by the narrowest definition a wiki is a message board.
my understanding is that the problem with the wiki is the broken links.  That mean if the broken links are replace with good links or removed by edit, the issue goes away.

Wiki is not a message board. Wiki is an encyclopedia. You are posting on the message board. It is "message board" singular in the TOS. You're just making stuff up now.

Wiki is a social media used to bring people and content together.  Allowing for collaborative effort that includes messaging.  There are about 50 wiki software package available including open software.  The issue with the version of wiki at Aces High is that the different authors failed to keep there contributions updated.   As for the TSO the term message board refers to and covers all forms of written messaging within the game, including BBS, Wiki, PM and text boxes.  It doesn't have to be plural.
