The book is fabulous, an amazing story masterfully written.
The movie was decent, but I wouldn't put it in my list of top WWII movies (which includes in no particular order A Bridge Too Far, Das Boot, 30 Seconds Over Tokyo, Midway, Saving Private Ryan, Patton, Theirs is the Glory, Battle of Britain, and 12 O'Clock High).
The flying scenes were outstanding -- some of the best out there. I was very impressed -- but that makes up only a small portion of the movie.

I had that feeling.
I read the book as well back in the summer-fall, really enjoyed the book myself. Friday night i had the chance to go to the movies and opted to see the Hobbit over Unbroken. My aunt, who has also read the book, said the movie was decent but the book was much better.

Books are always better especially if your imagination is inspired by the writing. But I never hold that against a movie. Judging a movie by a book is like judging a book by it's cover.

I personally like the movie probably the best one this year as far as wwii movies that came out.

Almost always. The Deadzone (a great movie) is much better than the book. Princess Bride is an awesome movie, probably about as good as the book. Total Recall is better than the story it is based on.
In this case, my judgement of the movie being decent but not great would not be changed if there were no book. I'm judging it as a movie on its own merits.

In many ways even Lord of the Rings is better than its book (not talking about the Hobbit). Just looking at what the extended versions added to the LotR movies that weren't in the original theater editions. All the things omitted were good omissions (IMO). The parts that didn't appear in the theatrical nor the extended editions were universally the worst parts of Tolkien's story.
I consider the book to be the super-fan's ultra-extended edition that need only be read by those with an obsession. If anything, trying to include too much is what has tarnished the Hobbit more than anything else.

I think that the 1st movie is awesome. The next 2, not as good, with some things thrown in that I think are very poor choices. But that 1st one . . . wow!

The movie "JAWS" was far better than the book.

Brooke, dont forget Wake Island, love it

Now see I don't agree with that. The book had so many more little back stories going on that is just non stop. Freshman year we were suppose to read The Red Pony or some equally boring book for english class. The teacher took a poll to see if everyone was willing to buy their own copy of JAWS that had just come out and we could do that instead for the next semester or two. It passed and I think I finished the book in 3 nights I just couldn't put it down. I had to reread it a couple times to remember what happened when for the quizzes :D
The movie, while good, used sound and picture editing to bring in the suspense, the book had none of that and had to carry it on it's own, which I think it did very well.

Along the same lines and author....after reading Stephen Kings "The Stand" and watching the movie I thought the movie was extremely well done and the (movie) characters were really close to how my imagination pictured them (in some sick way, yes even Molly Ringwald)
-
Really? (The Stand) I thought the movie adaptation left a lot to be desired. It was was too cartoony for my tastes. But I'll generally take a book over a movie.

Hey Dicho :salute. Hope u had a great holiday sir. Yea I'm a book guy all the way, but IMHO I thought it was done about as good as could be done going from a story that large. Maybe it's the fact that most books to movies are done so bad, that when one isn't it looks better than it really is :lol. I really thought they did a great job on it though.
-
For any of you who saw Unbroken, do you think that the aircraft scenes are about the best (other than real WWII footage) you've seen in films? I thought that they did an awesome job on that part.
-
Based only on trailer scenes I'd say it is usual Hollywood CGI. Nice looking, unrealistic movement, unrealistic physics unrealistic internal lighting in planes etc. Made to appeal general public. Brings in enough money to keep them producing the same crap over and over again.
This is real footage:

Just came back from watching this....its a good movie. My wife was so mad at the Japanese Prison Camp commander at the end. It's really more of a tail of enduring hardship and keeping your spirit from being broken. The fact there was an aerial battle scene at all was just for eye candy and didn't do much for the story. I think the movie did a good job covering his story growing up as a minority, dealing with it, his turning to track to "make something better" of himself and finally his toughness to withstand the constant torture at the hands of the Japanese.
Not only did I get to see the movie....I swung by a memorial built for Zamperini in Olean NY just this last weekend. He was born in Olean, NY then the family moved to CA and the advice from their doctor after Louie had a bout with pneumonia. Still Zamperini relatives in town.
