Title: Want a Reliable Supercar? Don't buy a 2015 Corvette Z06
Post by: -ammo- on January 06, 2015, 11:30:49 AM
Well, beware anyway.  As the old saying goes in high-performance cars; you play, you pay.  Yet, I am surprised that this Z06's plant came apart with less than 1000 miles!  It appears from the article that Chevy is honoring the warranty even though the owner was in the throttle hard when it happened.

Most likely a manufacturing defect not something the driver did.

I just put a new motor in a 2014 GMC 1500 pickup with 1300 miles. Knock in Cylinder #4 and like the article said it was sent back to GM to identify what went wrong. Most likely excessive tolerance in the wrist pin on a piston. Engines today have extremely close tolerances and a few 1000s clearance can cause issues.

Happy customers have a good warranty.

But repeat customers are the ones that don't need the warranty.

My brother missed a 3-4 shift in my firebird with 1800 miles on it, and dropped it into second at about 120 mph.  The tach zipped up to a bit over 7k before he got the clutch back in, not sure how high it really went since the tach probably had a bit of lag in it.  The motor ran fine (including a few autox racing seasons) for another 110,000ish miles before I sold it.  Those early F-body LS-1 motors were built pretty well since they'd gotten the major flaws out of them already with a few years putting them in vettes already.

I don't know how you yanks build your manual gearboxes but no manual gear car that I ever drove would even let you switch to 2nd gear after revving the 3rd all the way without extreme violence. The sync gears just won't catch up at that speed. I used to drive manual exclusively for around 15 first years of driving before I bought the first Mercedes of many to come.

Toyota celicas shift so smoothly, you can be going at a high rate of speed in 5th gear and select 2nd.........and it will drop right in.

Some of the freeze frame data shows over 10,000 rpms and I've even been able to feel the bent tang like springs of the pressure plate through the clutch pedal.......and even found ones bent over.

Any moron can ruin a car in very few miles.

Beating on a high performance car while it's cold is a recipe for instant karma.

Isn't reliable supercar sort of an oxymoron?  :)

Not if you buy Porsche.

Not if you buy Porsche.

My understanding is the 911 badged as GT2 and GT3 are pretty finicky and need a lot of maintenance.  Those are the cars I would consider super cars.

My 2014 Shelby hasn't had a problem yet and is quite docile as a daily driver but delivers super car performance.

Calling the Corvette and 911 supercars is a bit of a stretch. They're both high-end sports cars, but they both make too many compromises for comfort and practicality to be supercars. The Porsche GT2/3 is closer, but still more of a track-day car. The Porsche Carrera GT and Ford GT are genuine supercars.

Sir, with all due respect, please, it isn't even close.

None taken!

I guess it depends on how one defines super car performance.

And yea, it is much better in a straight line than on a road course.  But I did shame a GT3, Caddi CTV and an R8 on the autobahn last summer.  Those drivers surely respect this Shelby now if they didn't before.
