Title: Toughest 47?
Post by: Slade on January 17, 2015, 06:07:21 AM
Guys,

Out of our P-47 lineup, which would you say is the toughest in the context of surviving gun\ACK damage?

Thanks,

Slade  :salute

With the exception of the flying gas tank (P-47N) I'd imagine they are all practically indistinguishable in terms of toughness.

Razorback.  Less of a chance of a Pilot Kill when getting shot at from the rear.

The aluminium isn't going to be any more use against a bullet than the perspex would be.  Is the armor plate larger?

Actually, while you wouldn't think so, bullets quite often ricocheted off the aluminum wings and fuselage of aircraft when being fired on from an extremely oblique angle.  The canopy provided a more perpendicular surface that allowed it to be penetrated.

Someone posted some good gun camera footage of this effect a while back.  I'll see if I can dig it up.

Thanks for posts.  Good points.

So some say Razor back, some say P-47n. Anyone else have any data on this topic?

To be clear, I think the P-47N is the least durable of P-47s because it is a flying gas can and therefor, even with self sealing tanks, more likely to become a roman candle.  I just don't think there is a significant difference between any of the others.

They're all pretty much the same IMO. Since HT fixed the fuel leak thing, they're about as rugged as they should be. In one run I've taken down the ord at three separate bases making no less than 5 passes to do so. Still had enough parts left to down three enemy planes after the 5th pass. D-40 is the machine to do it with. N can carry the same load but is a turd when the WEP runs out.
