Title: New toy
Post by: Curval on January 27, 2015, 12:53:27 PM
About a year ago I started a post here about boats and the search that was on at the time.

Turned out that the guy I planned to share the boat with decided, after an offer was rejected for a 32' Pursuit, that he really wasn't going to be around last summer enough to justify a boat.

So, I decided that I would go ahead and buy myself something small that I could use to familiarize myself with docking, rules of the water etc.  I have spent a lot of time on the water but never as the sole captain.

We had a great summer last year.  Every weekend the cry of "Daddy, can we go on the boat?" would be heard on Saturday and Sunday mornings.  But the kid's initial reaction when they saw the little 23foot Pursuit with a sun bleached battle scarred engine cover and the horrible old "Pursuit green" bottom paint wasn't great.  They sort of crinkled up their noses and weren't exactly thrilled with the step down from the 32' we had previously looked at.  I told them that one day, maybe even next year, we'd have something they would love.

Today my buddy and I received word that our offer to buy a 36' Pursuit was accepted.  The agent who showed us the 32' boat last year called us as soon as the owner asked him to sell it.

Here's exactly what it looks like:

http://www.pursuitboats.com/OS345.php

To get a really good feel for what it's like on board take a look at the 360 degree tour.

The one we have bought is a 2010 in showroom condition.  The two Yamaha 350s have a total of 60 hours run time on them.  Subject to the survey we have commissioned it will be ours by this weekend.

Here's a shot of my daughter "striking a pose" on the front of it, right before the sea trial last weekend:

A zen moment:

Mommy and Casey braving the wind:

And last but not least, my little 23 footer:

I am NOT selling the little boat.  In fact I have just approved a quote to put new canvas on it (the green one was basically destroyed in one of the hurricanes in October), the bottom has been repainted (dark blue) and the seats are all being recovered.  This way no matter what happens we will have a boat to use.  This one is great for wakeboarding, skiing and getting really close to shore.  It also fits at public docks at places we like to stop and eat.  It will not sit idle.  It is a great little boat, reliable and perfect for what we need it for.

Wow.  Awesome boat man. Really nice.

We don't know a darn thing about sailing so it wasn't an option for us to go with sail.

Congrats!

Very nice Curv....I see you decided not to go with the  Cat (hull)  good choice on the outboards. I have a friend that runs 3 Yamahas on his Jupiter and he loves them....they have always been flawless for him.

Hope it brings you years and years of fun, now get out there and FISH!!!! I've loved all my trips off Bermuda fishing.

Now that you have the boad I expect to see you stop in now and again in the Fishing thread    :lol :aok

Congrats!

Growing up on Lake Champlain I have had my share of both power and sail.  Both have their advantages and offer different experiences, but I prefer a big sailboat these day.  Just a personal choice.  Enjoy that Pursuit.  That's a fine, fine vessel.

Power boats get you to your destination quickly. Sailboats are about the journey not the destination. Love them both at different times.

Nothing like a day on the water.

Very nice Curvall - eventually, I will return to the U.S. and retire, the wife and I want a boat.  Reading your post and about the Pursuit makes me want to expedite the dream!

Well guys, if any of you were thinking about a trip to Bermuda we have two vacation rental units that are way below what a hotel would cost and you get a one bedroom fully furnished apartment with a full kitchen, BBQ outside, wifi, cable TV (big flat screens) and an awesome family to host you.

It would not take much to convince me to take you (and your family) out for a day on the water.

America's Cup is coming in 2017....we have some challenge races talking place in October of this year.

Check it out:

I have a paddle boat does that count? Nah just messing with you guys. I rent boats for the Day and enjoy a nice day of fishing and drinking beers with a few friends during the days of summer.

Awesome, I hope you have lots of good times and catch til the boxes are full.

Just a tip, I was reminded of an another unfortunate event lately; many solo trips (should you decide to do one) have ended up with a boat with no driver. Often the medical examiner finds the Capt's zipper down; he went to take a leak and fell over...

Get a lanyard/ignition kill if you don't already have one.

Kill switch is standard.  Absolutely agree that is a danger.  To be honest I don't see any solo trips happening for quite a while.  It's a pretty big boat for me and I want someone else there to help with ropes and anchors until I am comfortable.  That is going to take a bit of time.

Curv, you need to buy my 1845 Klingenthal French Sword (I'll even through in a white flag) and get a crossbones flag to hoist from the ship!
I'll give you a good price on it ($200)

HARRRRRRR

They'd probably confiscate that at customs knowing this place.

Definitely some flag action happening.  More to come on that.

Totally.  Scary though over water.  GoPro would be fine in its enclosure, drone not so much.

Thanks.  Have a look at some of the other units too, I know a bunch of them and can give you honest opinion.  No pressure for our place at all.  Just be great to get more people interested in coming.  The island speaks for itself.  We know people will want to come back.  Problem has been price for the stay.

Direct flight from Newark.  Takes about an hour and a half.  Even with all the airport hassle you probably wouldn't get to anywhere you'd want to go upstate, or out of state, any faster.

Come down, seriously.

Yea.  Cruise ships are floating hotels that leave way too soon.  When we go on cruises we stay on board in port generally.

Here's a few things you can do with your family:

Summer before last we rented a small boat from a club and took it over to a wreak sitting next to a small island.  Here' what happened when a huge school of fish showed up and I got my daughter to feed them, as close to my wife and son as possible.  LOL

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DObu26I7v-I

Then you have the cave in Tom Moore's Jungle.  Stalagmites and Stalactites in crystal clear water:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NektQ3PwGYM

Which is when you scare the rest of the kids (and youself..lol):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_e96vMwXoiw

Pompano Beach with the salty sea dog:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75KZCsb56qE

Whiz past the cruise ships on a tube.  (Actually, we can't do this any longer, as the nice men in the police boat kindly informed us soon after this was taken.  We have to stay away from the ships):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U6UcYZjdHF0

Fun.  :)
