Title: "The man that saved Finland" have passed away.
Post by: Zimme83 on February 06, 2015, 08:11:02 PM
A  :salute to Allan Finholm who passed away last month at an age of 92. He was one of the heroes during the desperate Battle at Tienhara in June 1944 when the Finnish army stopped the soviet assault. Tienhara was named "the lock of Finland" and a breaktrough there would have been disastrous for Finland. Finnholm stopped one attempt to cross the river by wiping out almost 2 soviet platoons by himself. He sadly never got any recognition for this, mainly because all commanding officers that should have reported it to the HQ where killed. Finholm himself got seriously wounded in the head by shrapnel.

Same here -- there is a copy of the movie about him on Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Beyond-Front-Line-DVD/dp/B00BM8SV1E/ref=sr_1_1?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1423405933&sr=1-1&keywords=beyond+the+front+line

But my Swedish, Finnish or Russian are not as good as I have bragged about.   (Not even sure if there is an English sub-title option on it).

That movie was on YouTube with English sub titles. I watched it there some years ago. I just checked but it doesn't appear to be up still.

One story you might be interested in is the story of Lauri Törni aka Larry Thorne. He got the highest award of the finnish army during WW2, served briefly in SS and then later became a legendary green beret in the US army untill his helo crashed during a mission to find the Ho Chi Minh trail in Laos.

Finholm in the middle, looking back, other two are Erik Kaustinnen (left) and Bror Östman. The man they are dragging are Nikolaj Smirnov, a russian sniper, hit in an ambush and died before the finns got him to the field hospital.

He did not save Finland, Roosevelt did, by asking you to disassociate from Nazi Germany, otherwise you'd be wiped out as Nazi allies. And with Germany gone so would be Finland.

Finland declared war on germany soon after that man "saved" finland from army that killed more germans than all allies combined. Whatever helps fins sleep at night.

As I said go away troll. Finland declared war on Germany after it signed an unconditional cease fire with Russia. Russians demanded that Finland pushed the German troops out of the Northern Finland.

Roosevelt did nothing except provide weapons for the russians in order to continue their illegal rampage against our country. And now they're repeating history in Ukraine and Transnistria.

The U.S. is not providing arms to Russia.  Maybe you meant something different.

Honey believe me after dispatching Germany, Finland would be no obstacle, So "saved" is an overstatement.
P.S. Ukrainian president flashed "Russian passports" from "Russian" dead soldiers in Ukraine, but everyone knows that solders do not Cary passports. And Ukraine recently provided US senate with evidence of  "Russian tanks", turns out pictures were taken from Georgian conflict in 2008.

Stop trolling. The war was already OVER with Soviet Union and Finland by the time Finland declared war to the germans. What is there so hard to understand?

The United States was never even a part of the negotiations. Did KGB join the Russian information warfare corps perhaps? They have hundreds of trolls feeding misinformation as a full day job. Expect a knock on the door from NSA if you live in the states lol.

KGB why dont you get lost for turning this into a flame fest.

Ripley America owed nothing to Finland in WW2 nor did we do anything to her. You collaborated with the Nazi's until it became clear that was a wrong decision then you kicked them out and learned to live with the Reds in your backyard. In Finlands defense they protected their Jews and the Finnish SS units have never been accused of war crimes.

None of this has anything to do with saluting the life of a Finnish Hero so just put this KGB guy on ignore and he'll go <poof>.

We collaborated with the nazis as the last option in order to defend the country from unwarranted Russian aggression. France promised to help Finland. United Kingdom promised to help Finland. The US promised to help Finland. The list continues. In the end nobody came to assist. We were left alone at 10 to 1 odds.  By 1941 all the 'helpers' were already allied with Russia so the only super power that could supply arms and assist was Germany. Either collaborate with them or die, two options.

Quote from wikk
"In December 1941, the Finnish army took defensive positions. This led to a long period of relative calm in the front line, lasting until 1944. During this period, starting at 1941 but especially after the major German defeat in the Battle of Stalingrad, intermittent peace inquiries took place. These negotiations did not lead to any settlement.
On 16 March 1944, the President of the United States, Franklin D. Roosevelt, called for Finland to disassociate itself from Nazi Germany."
During WW2 Finland was a side show for USSR, nothing major until 1944, single offence almost depleted Finnish forces in June. I emagine that was a reason for promt peace talk.
Cease fire was agreed on September fourth, armistice was signed on 14's of September, when it was obvious that germany is doomed, conditions of treaty demanded to engage germans in Lapland.
How is this trolling?

Don't try to explain that Russia isn't involved in the conflict. They admitted it themselves by accepting the negotiations. They also made a mistake of admitting that the separatists have a weapon system that is not exported out of Russia lol.

Yes you're trolling. You're crapping over this thread with your bs. Roosevelt made the plea before the Tali-Ihantala battle where the Finns stopped the vastly superior (in numbers) Russian force. He did not save anything. If the finnish army didn't stop the russians Helsinki would have been captured and we'd now be ex Soviet Union like the rest of the eastern europe.

Quote
During World War II, Finland was in many ways a unique case: It was the only European country bordering the Soviet Union in 1939 which was still unoccupied by 1945. Of all the European countries fighting, only three European capitals were never occupied: Moscow, London and Helsinki. It was a country which sided with Germany, but in which native Jews and almost all refugees were safe from persecution.[26] It was the only co-belligerent of Nazi Germany which maintained democracy throughout the war. It was also the only belligerent in mainland Europe to do so.

You have a point. But to Marshall Vasilevsky, already on June 17 it was decided that after the Soviets took Viborg and the Viborg Bay islands, the offensive would stop at the line Elisenvaara-Imatra-Virojoki, Soviet forces would switch to defense, and the main forces of the Leningrad Front would be concentrated on fighting the German forces in Estonia. And according to Österberg, Stenius, and Östling, the battle of Tali-Ihantala is portrayed in Finland as a Finnish national struggle for survival and "the great defensive victory." This portrayal, these authors allege, is part of a nationalistic view of Finland in World War II, for which the international context is ignored, the role of Finland is exaggerated, and the idea of a separate war is claimed. These authors further contend that substantial German aid is not mentioned or is only hinted at.

How you managed to connect to separate issues is beyond me. Its as if i asked you "So you think the Nazi's were justified in invading France?"
Finns did not produce even remote number of noticeable people as lets say USA,Germany, Italy, England,France.......
It is only natural that they clinch to every opportunity to claim a Hero. They even list AngryBirds as an "invention" on wiki page.
So that fairy tail of Finns (and germans, they never mention that) fighting 3 times exaggerated number of reds, with Finnish supperman single handed killing two battalions of seasoned solders thus saving city that was never intended to be captured in the first place does not surprise me.
God bless their hearts:)
