Title: Nuke-Armed B-29 Analysis
Post by: Alucard_II on February 14, 2015, 09:10:52 PM
Been a while, its Allie.  :t

I flew my first 29 today... flew about 20 sectors and annihilated a bishie aaa fac. It was so intensely fun.
Thanks to LTOWN for walking me through flying the behemoth and gunning down a few fighters trying to get us down  :aok

After that, I was wondering.
Say if we actually did have a nuclear bomb in the game. Would you be able to takeoff, fly, drop it, and return home?
YES.

(not a wish for a atomic bomb, i actually find the idea stupid and it would ruin the game)

I did some research and found out some interesting things...

A bare B-29 with 1 Atomic bomb, would be easier to take off than the 4000lbers. (im using the fat man bomb as a basis)

With the B-29 loadout, you can equip up to 4x 4000lb GP bombs. That adds up to 16,000lbs of cargo.
The B-29 has a maximum payload carry weight of up to 20,000lbs. (wait... why not one more 4000lber HTC?) :headscratch:

Anyways, the Fat Man atomic bomb weighed roughly 10,300lbs in total.
So, it'd be easier to take off with the atomic bomb than it would be with the 4000lbers

I just found this really wierd and interesting. Hopefully some of you do as well.
Thanks

Because weight isn't the only limiting factor.  You have to have somewhere to hang the bomb.

4x4000lb is an HQ setup. Basically you have 16kx3=48,000 lbs.

If you use 5x4000 your at 60,000 which is over kill.

B29 is a much better HQ killer. You don't see them used for it due to perks and lack of desire to bail after drp because of cost.

A 4k cookie doesn't do 4000lb of damage but 2344lb. So you have an effective destructive power of only just over 28,000lb.

8x2000lbs is the only loadout that can take out HQ in one pass when in B-29. It can be done with 40x500 too but it requires at least 2 passes because u don't get enough bombs out in time to hit the HQ in one pass.

I believe both the "Enola Gay" and "Box Car" were stripped of their 50s to save weight.  They may have only had a tail gunner.  So that may improve performance slightly?
