Why is the cafeteria food at VA so so bad?
I've been to a few of the cafeterias at local hospitals and some of them are even good enough to consider stopping by for a meal if you happen to be in the neighborhood.
The VA, their food is terrible; it can not be called comfort food or anything other than carp. Why?

I wonder if it has to do with contracts that each VA director makes. Obviously we know the Director here in Phx, was uhhh, well baaaaad, very corrupt. Hopefully she gets jail time.
Semp seems to indicate though that it's just as bad where he went. Is it that bad at all of them?

Lowest price, technically compliant.
I went to look up the VA cafeteria contracts. Very confusing. I'm not sure how they work. (I know government contracting pretty well).
A lot of people complain that government workers are lazy, incompetent, corrupt etc. But I think that that is an over simplification. Many of those guys are just job interviewing for positions in the private sector. (not illegal). That is their job. It is how we have chosen to make our civil service work.

I refuse so far to even ever go to a VA hospital for anything. I have lost total faith in them.

If the food is bad people want to leave sooner. Saves taxpayer money and probably reduces how many patients pick up additional infections while in hospital. Of course, after waiting 8-10 months for an appointment, it would be nice to get at least one good meal there.

Go to a real restaurant.
When I want quality furniture, I don't go to WalMart.
When I want quality food, I don't go to a cafeteria.

Why not have ur wife or kids bring u some good food? Beggars can't be choosers.

It has everything to with the gubment choosing the lowest bidder. If the bidders offer substinance, then that is good enough in the eyes of the VA. It's BS IMO. If the gubment (I work for DoD BTW) would apply the same standard across all Branches and Agencies, I wouldn't have a problem with it. What this tells us is how much the gubment appreciates the retiree's service to their country

If you go to UT Southwestern Medical Center you get the exact same Docs as Dallas VA and Ft Worth VA Clinic. I can't speak for anyone else, but I've had an outstanding experience with VA healthcare. The only downside is having to drive all the way to Fort Worth or Dallas for some treatments the local clinic can't do (Cardiologist, ect), but they will compensate you for travel if you apply for it. Beyond that, all my regular stuff gets done at my local clinic and $4 scripts by mail. Muy pleased.

You folks may know this but it's worth stating. If you are a disabled Vet and see a doctor due to a situation related to your disability, and you have to pay a co pay with your policy, the VA will recompense you every penny of your out of pocket expenses.

See that's my point. Our local hospitals cafeteria food is actually really good. No it's not quite up to the standards of the Biltmore restaurants, but beats the fast food joints and Subway by a mile. The VA cafeteria food here: worse than McDonalds or Jack in the Box.

The food at the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center cafeteria is quite good. When I have an appt there I make it a point to eat there.
Their budget is being drastically cut though with closing of operations in Iraq and Afghanistan
