Cpt J.Marr 405th BG/511th BS
Died in France while strafing GVs and gun emplacement. He earlier toggle his 500lbs bombs, but one did not release. While on a strafing run at 150ft it freed itself taking him out in the blast :frown:

He collided with two birds, then bombed 4 targets, then did 8 fighter sweeps, then killed two Marry Poppins, ate two whole chickens, bombed 3 more targets and popped another Poppins. Then shagged a sheep.
...and that was just on Wednesday...

Looks like fighter sweeps, high cover, two strafing of airfields, one train and two marshaling yards, along with general fighter bomber work.
405th was a 9th AF ground attack bunch

Are the umbrella symbols for weather missions? Don't think I have seen those before.

Top cover. I'd imagine on that particular mission his squadron was flying top cover for the other two squadrons that were dropping bombs. It was standard practice to do that since the fighter bombers were down low to do their work. the Fighter Umbrella was there to protect them from enemy above.
