Title: Windows 10
Post by: Dragon Tamer on February 26, 2015, 10:32:31 PM
I've installed Windows 10 on my personal computer at home and I've gotta say that so far I like what they are doing. It has a Windows 7 feel but has features from Windows 8 thrown in. Everything that I've tried to do on it so far (with the exception of trying to run executable from my primary HD, and clicking on emotes here on the BBs) has worked. I think I remember reading on Microsoft's website that any program that can run on Windows 8 will be able to run on 10.

It's not all sunshine and rainbows though...

-It's pretty early in the build process so the UI looks a little... flat (ie. boring).

-Because the processor on this rig is a 32 bit, I'm stuck running the 32 bit version. It seems kind of slow doing certain tasks and I don't know if this is hardware or software related (the whole system just barely meets the minimum requirements). Installed the 64 bit version on one of the school computers and it ran very smoothly.

Edit: Just checked the task manager (they've completely changed it's look btw) and my slow speed is a hardware related issue.

-My screen resolution is jacked up... I'm stuck at 1080x768 and it won't let me go up even though my monitor can do 1600x900. I'm assuming this is set based on hardware capabilities but I'm not entirely sure. I'll post back later if I get it working the way I want.

I'm still playing around with it a bit so there are still things that I'm trying to figure out. I'm curios if some of our other tech savvy members have tried it yet, if so I'm curious to hear their opinions. That being said, I think I found my next OS!

Edit: And no, I won't be playing AH on this OS, not enough system resources.

Did you install the graphics card driver? Windows 8.1 version works. And the flat look is by design, that's how they plan to make it look.

Everything I've seen so far is that Windows 10 is what Windows 8 SHOULD have been. I especially like Microsoft finally acknowledging that Metro is a garbage interface for desktop. It's great for touch screen devices, but for mouse and keyboard/touchpad users? Nuh-uh. WAY too awkward (I don't let any Windows 8 install get deployed without installing Classic Shell first).  That Windows will automatically detect the device type and switch its default interface automatically is especially cool. Integrating Metro with the start menu is also how they should have done it in the first place.

Basically, Windows 10 is why you skip a generation when Microsoft releases a new OS.

All fixed. Windows 10 downloads drivers automatically like Windows 7 and 8, but I needed to restart the computer before they could take effect... Because I'm an idiot apparently :(

Here's a tip...do not let Windows download and install drivers.  Disable that feature in Windows (all versions) and manually download and install any driver yourself.

Worth stating again.  The fastest way to get your computer screwed up is to allow Windows to automatically install driver updates.  Well,...assuming you do not have McAfee or Norton installed.  If so, then Microsoft created problems are just a pebble being tossed into the Grand Canyon of problems.

Instead of saying 'you should do this or that' how about giving instructions? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2500967

So, I've got 8 right now (Came with the computer). This is pretty much my dedicated gaming computer (I don't need it to do anything else but run AH and DCS lol). Is it worth making the jump to 10 from 8?

I haven't used 8 extensively, but I didn't like it at all when I did use it. I've never used 8.1 but I heard it was marginally better than 8.

If you only use your computer for DCS and AH, then I would say just stick with 8 if it's working for you. I'm planning on upgrading from XP because other than the fact that XP is no longer supported, I use my computer for just about everything. 10 is like Win 7 with some 8 thrown into the mix.

Now if only I could find the control panel...  :headscratch:

I am wild guessing here but I suspect MS wants everyone in W10 as soon as possible.  Not often they offer an upgrade like this.  Again a very wild guess.

They are offering free upgrades for Win7 users, but (surprise!) WinXP users that are no longer supported will need to pay to upgrade.

Is it worth making the jump to 10 from 8?

When it becomes production ready, yes. I would only recommend installing Win10 for people who want to test it or need a gaming OS free of charge. It will expire pretty soon at which point it will possibly need to be replaced with a retail OS version until Win10 starts selling officially.

Dumb question. Will older windows programs still work on 10? I have a series of the old Command and Conquer games and Far Cry I like to boot up now and then, They are the newer releases redone for windows me / vista etc. My curerent system is getting rather old, 6 years now and starting to show it's age. I'm holding off until I can get a new system with 10 as I want nothing to do with 8.

Most programs that work on 8 will work on 10. Even device drivers from 8.1 work with the 10.

Probably very true for the home user crowd, but the commercial people don't want to upgrade their entire system every time a new version comes out.  It takes far too long to train the users, and far too many programs, once built, are an integral part of their business.
Windows 7 will be the standard for commercial users for quite some time.  Heck I am just now retiring out 4 XP systems simply due to age, and no other reason.  The systems are out in my plan room for my contractors to come in, load up the plans and do estimating.  Nothing fancy needed or required.  That is most systems out in the small business world.

I just bought a laptop for my Wife.  It came with Windows 8.1.  Talk about clunky and awkward.  Not to mention, every feature Microsoft was paying a royalty for has been removed from the operating system and they charge more for OS.  What a deal!

My Wife hates it.  I am trying to figure out how I can get Windows 7 on it for her.  Laptops are a pain, in that regard.

Windows 10 does not look any better.

Throw Classic Shell on there. Basically makes Windows 8 run like Windows 7, giving you the good points of both.

There are good points in 8.1?

So far it has been a nightmare to configure and grab up all the third party software needed to make it do most of what Windows 7 did out of the box.

Her $15,000.00 printer is not supported in Windows 8.1, but it is in Windows 7 and that is the biggest issue.  The Windows 7 driver does not work with 8.1.  Just awesome. Come to find out, none of the three printer/scanner devices we have will work with Windows 8.1, but work great with Windows 7 or Linux.

Had I known about the lack of printer support available, I would have gone a different route.  I hate mobile devices.  Every day I go home I am dreading to hear about the next thing she cannot get to work.

Oh, to keep it on topic.  Windows 10 drops more support for more hardware.

What, your wife bought a 15k printer from a brand that doesn't bother to upgrade its drivers? Sounds like a rotten deal!

Yes, Hewlett Packard sucks.  Still has two years left on the support contract.

And Microsoft wonders why businesses are not willing to upgrade.

Please note I am not wanting to have anything to do with win 8 anything. My system is still on Vista. My question was if the win 10 will run those programs, NOT win 8.

That kind of thing is astonishing to me, both that a new version of windows wouldn't be reverse compatible, and if that's the case, that HP wouldn't be right on top of getting new drivers out.  I know one of our users here had to wait a year before our one printer would work on his 8.1.

It just makes zero sense.

You're already 3 generations behind. No guarantees on anything working, although probably over 90% of software will continue work normally.

It appears Windows 10 is going to be a free upgrade for Windows 7 and newer OS's.
I'll check it out when it's released.

Yeah, I'll be sticking with 7 for a while, next stop is Linux.

I'm going to use the best of all worlds. I'm using OSX where it works. Linux where it works and Windows for games, where it works. This is the route I recommend for you all.

Linux is excellent for web browsing, internet banking, multimedia playback etc. OSX is excellent in content cration, movie/sound editing, multimedia playback etc. Windows is excellent in almost anything except online internet activities. And DO NOT USE WAREZ WITH WINDOWS OR OSX. Warez is your number one route to trouble.
