First, read the original story by Phillip K Dick, "Do Robots Dream of Electric Sheep?".

And then go out and buy everything he ever wrote and experience the universe of possibly the best SciFy writer, ever.

The first one was a cultural phenomenon. If you weren't around in '77 then you never saw anything like it. The 2nd "Empire" was a very good movie, dark, sinister, actually good dialogue since Lucas hired another to write it. The 3rd "Return" was maybe worth it just to see Princess Leia in that skimpy outfit, a chain attached to her neck held by the Intergalactic gangster Jabba the Hut.

Then "Phantom" blew, "Clones" blew, "Revenge" blew. The last two I never even saw in the theater but only when my kid bought the DVDs. Maybe the next three have a chance with Lucas out of the picture and Disney on it. We'll see.

"Time to Die"

I wonder if the Nexus6 will die holding a shotgun next time.

I was born in '83, after Jedi. but I can remember having the original trilogy on VHS in the mid 80's. I had some of the toys - especially remember R2D2. Later, once I had a Nintendo, I got all the games this followed in the 90's with SNES and PC games, especially loving Dark Forces and the original Rogue Squadron. I was 13 when the rereleases "Special Editions" came to theaters. Obviously, I jumped at the chance to see them all on the big screen. The experience was awesome, but the flaws were obvious and the changes not generally needed.

Oh, never mind the "Han shot first" argument, it really should be, "Han shot only!"

In '99 when Phantom Menace was released. Again, I rushed to the theater to see it. I was mostly disappointed. It's a bad movie, with none of the charm of the Original Trilogy. The only bright spots being the performances of Liam Neeson and Ewan McGregor - even though the script itself sucked, the menace of Darth Maul - even with the dumb name, he "mauls," get it? Also the saber battle between these three is the greatest in the entire series. But these did little to make TPM remotely rewatchable. No need to go over the myriad of flaws. The next two films were even worse than TPM. McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobi -  fantastic performance, everything else - total crap.

Nope. Sorry. ABSOLUTELY wrong. Both Luke vs. Vader duels are MILES above ANY of the duels on the prequel trilogy.

The only thing TPM's duel has is the gimmick of the double lightsaber. The fight choreography was HORRIBLE. Just a bunch of Matrix-wannabe twirly sword dance. Nick Gilliard is a hack and they should have stayed with Bob Anderson.

The Luke vs. Daddy fight in Empire Strikes Back was leaps ahead of anything that came afterwards in the "prequels".

The RotJ duel was the best in the series, though. Everything that was happening: Vader trying to turn Luke, Luke trying to turn Vader, and then the Emperor manipulating it all. And then that final moment when Luke finally cuts loose to protect Leia. Complete brilliance.

Except the part where Vader drops to his knees for no reason, and clings to the rail for support. Other than that, it's pretty great.

But I prefer Luke vs. Vader on Bespin. Better cinematography, better tension, Vader is much more intimidating - brutal yet precise saber wielding, force telekinesis use, capped off with the big reveal. Now that is pure brilliance.

He did have a reason.  He was forced to his knees due to the increase power of Luke's attacks.

From the Wookieepedia.
Quote
Luke's rage exploded. Using the Force to retrieve his lightsaber from Vader, Luke tapped into the dark side and used his hate and anger to boost his physical prowess. He then attacked Vader with such intensity that their lightsabers, both of which contained synthetic crystals, began to short out. Vader, taken completely off guard by Luke's sudden increase in power and aggression, was forced onto his back foot and quickly driven onto a short bridge between the throne room and the elevator. Luke continued to hammer Vader with vicious power attacks until Vader lost his footing and collapsed against a railing on the side of the bridge. After a few more blows, Luke drove Vader's lightsaber aside with an undercut and brought his weapon down on Vader's wrist, severing Vader's weapon hand and causing him to collapse onto the floor.

That was always my reading of it. Given the way that shot was cut, I'm thinking they had to tread very carefully while maneuvering the actor into that position because of lack of visibility in the mask so he wouldn't accidentally toppled off the set platform. That's why it looks like he's easing himself down: He actually WAS, and then they used some mild camera tricky to sort of cut around it.

I adore the book "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep". I was especially taken by the theme of animal obsession.
The movie was a great adaptation of the book and I loved the flim noir style.

I've heard rumors that this second movie is supposed to be the "tie-in" between the Blade Runner Universe and the Alien universe. I personally wouldn't think that would work to well but if they can do it than great. I am skeptical of Harrison Fords signing on to the movie. The ending of the first one suggests that Deckard may in fact be a Repilcant, doomed to "deactive" in only few years. I love Harrison Ford, but he's really is just another washed out 80s action star.

I've also heard Ridley Scott is directing it which might not be a good thing necessarily. He's a great director but he is well passed his prime. I liked the Prometheus movie but it was pretty far from his best work. I just have a feeling that this new movie is Ridley and Harrison "Filming a new summer house".

any David Bowie fans get the feeling that the first movies soundtrack was influenced by the 3 instrumentals on "Heroes"?

Deckard was told in the end of the movie that some replicants were special, they didn't have a set expire date. Or perhaps that was in the 'alternate ending'. One thing is for sure - it will never be the same movie without Vangelis' soundtrack.

Demis Roussos who performed on three of the tracks just recently passed away and Vangelis AFAIK has stopped producing.
