Title: Ok, the apocalypse must be coming.......Top Gear likes American pickup trucks!
Post by: 63tb on March 03, 2015, 07:51:20 AM
Ok, what's going on? A few weeks ago Jeremy Clarkson said (and the other two agreed) how much he liked the new Corvette.
On the show last night he and James May went on about how much they liked the F-150 Raptor (well the modded Velociraptor), and the Chevy Silverado!!!!!!!!

He has ripped into Detroit on a number of occasions. I remember a rip on a F150 before, but they have been impressed with American cars from time to time. Remember their first trip (was it their first?) to Bonneville?

Yes I was shocked when I watched the show on Sunday. Clarkson must have had an epiphany since his experiences in Argentina.
Or maybe, just maybe American manufacturers are finally catching up on Europe and Japan when it comes to maybe car that look good and handle well!
I'd love that Ford 150 but somehow I don't think it would fit down the medieval streets you find all over the city I live in!

I liked the Trucks too for 20 grand its a whole lot of car compaired to what we would pay for the equivalent over here in UK.
I think judging by the last couple of corvettes to id say america are definitley making better handling cars because it was never a question of can you guys make a engine.

I liked when Jeremy busted the right front tire (or is it tyre? :)) and kept on going up the mountain - POWER!
The Ford brass must be really happy with that result, (not so much the Chevy brass, as James said he busted an axle on the Silverado).

We can make any engine except a decent small turbo-diesel... That apparently is beyond the reach of us simple colonials. I drove a beautiful little car in Denmark about 10 yrs ago... can't remember what brand, maybe a saab, but it was a small wagon sort of like a Subaru. It had a tiny little turbo diesel maybe 1.8l, but had the torque of a 3.0 V6 and revved happily enough to haul the car around with plenty of pep, all at about 55-60 mpg. For a daily around town driver and moderately long trip cruiser, that car and engine combination is still vastly superior to anything American made today. Ford has made a lot of progress with their ecoboost motors but a competent tiny little turbo diesel similar to ones available in Europe 10 yrs ago (matched with some decent diesel fuel) would change the game completely in the US for small vehicles. My job right now has a long commute, and a lot of my co-workers drive various types of VW diesels. They spend about half for fuel what most people in similarly capable gasoline cars pay, over the same drive. As a simple example, even a big Taurus with a 2 liter turbodiesel instead of an ecoboost motor would get an additional 10-20 mpg and feel more powerful around town due to the low end torque from the diesel.

I was cracking up when Clarkson was talking about how affordable they are (sure a base model 2wd, 2 door F-150 can be had for ~ $25k) as he's rolling along in a $80K+ Hennessey Velociraptor. And the Duramax Z71 that May had was at least $50k.
