Title: New gamer
Post by: ebfd11 on March 09, 2015, 06:44:34 PM
Well I went out and did the unthinkable... I bought myself a whole new rig...

Asus Z97 pro MB
I7 4970 CPU
ASUS R9 285 video card
8 gig corsair dominator 2133 ram
corsair 850 watt PSU
256 gig crucial SSD
1 TB WD Black spinny HD
All put into a corsair Air 540 cube case ...

Still installing the drivers right now and downloading the game and HiRes pack ... so I will let you know what it runs like and post some pics later.

Great stuff Lawndart, I'm sure you're going to be a real happy camper with that.

I'm interested to know how the AMD GPU will work for you, once you get up and going, maybe post some personal observations or even some FPS data and experiences if you can.  That's some sick RAM, I have Corsair Dominator in one system as well, Vengeance in the other just not 2133, 1866 - you'll not be worrying about RAM holding you back when overclocking, ha ha.  You going to O/C that thing?

The GPU is bottlenecking that system. I got the R9 290 and I'm not impressed at all.

what card would you go for right now ripley?

those 290's seem to be pretty cheap...

Ripley is right ... that vid card is some major crap... I can only get max 21 FPS on it with everything turned down. I have already Tiger Direct and I can do a swap ... so I am looking at a 980 ... gonna be a few more pennies but I will let you know how it goes.

PS its nice to have a tiger direct 40 mins from teh house.

Agreed, the 285 is bottlenecking the system. Terribly.

Other than the video card, very nice setup!

In my opinion, the 285 and 290 are both, well, crap. The 290X is good, but not really worth considering unless you're running 4k resolutions, as the Nvidia GTX 970 outperforms it slightly in most all configurations under 4k resolution. They simply can't touch the GTX 970 until you get into very high resolutions running high AA/AF.

Actually the 290 is very close to 290X in performance but a lot cheaper. The 290X is a bad deal. I wish I would have bought the GTX970 but I guess I got affected by all the scandal writing about it. I'm waiting for the Titan X to hit the stores, maybe prices will drop again.

On the other hand looking at this chart, the 285 should have got way more than 21fps. At least 100+ fps in AH2. There was something else wrong.

If you only get 21 FPS in AH with everything turned down there must be other issues than just the card. I know benchmarks don't tell the entire truth, yet it should outperform my HD 6970. Some comparisons I saw say that they are almost par. In any case it should not perform that much worse! I can run mine @ 2560x1600 with almost everything maxed, getting a solid 59 FPS most of the time. 21 is what I've experienced near very high polygon counts.

Or was that before installing the video drivers?

If you happened to try and overclock the card, you can easily end up with far worse performance than the standard clock.  For most of AMD/ATI cards, you ave to be conscious of the multiplier and increment the clocks by a specific amount or performance will get much, much worse.

Just tossing that out there.

Well I had to RMA teh card... they took it back no questions asked... while I was there I was looking at differnt cards... I know people dont say get 2 GPU's but I ended up getting 2 EVGA 960's and am running triple screen rig. The differnce I have now from my 570's running triple screen is phenominal.

I will get pics as soon as I get everything finalized.. I'm happier than a teenager seeing his 1st set of Wazzoo's ...

I'm sorry to hear that. SLI is only going to cause you trouble in the long run. What made you end up to that decision?

Going to triple screen ... I wanted to have the best resolution... 5760 X 1080 and the card was'nt strong enough to operate 3 screens. I know AH doesn't have a good sli profile but when i ran it with my 570's it was good enough for me..

I run triple monitors on a 780Ti at max refresh in AH, MWO and others.  A lone 980 should have no problems doing the same.

That's what I have, triple ASUS VE258Q (1920 x 1080) screens running off a single GTX 980 (see link in sig).   :aok

That is really disappointing about the vCard.
