I really enjoy the tanks in Aces High and I don't see this wish effecting the fighter pilots or bombers in any significant way. If the gv's want to hide in the trees. buildings, or any other areas in the landscape, why not let them? That is what they did in WW2. They put on camouflage or hid them in buildings to avoid detection. Expensive hardware was always protected. They did not have an icon above them telling the enemy what kind of gv the were. If the gv is out in the open then the pilots should be able to see what kind of vehicle it is since the new terrain will have better graphics engine.
We would see more perked rides off of the concrete and out at the spawns if they had a chance to survive being egged.
After all, tanks do not fly up and kill planes, they only main gun the ones that come in really low asking for it.
There is nothing more challenging in the gv battles than killing a Tiger or Tiger 2 with your medium armor tank.
Why are enemy icons for gv's turned on in the first place? Is it a software issue that does not allow them to be completely turned off?
We have storchs now that fly around at slow speeds that can see and hear gv's so there is no real reason to leave the icons on when the new terrain is released.

No, again. The Icon's are there to make up for the difference in what the game renders and what you can see. If you take the Icons completely away then the ability to see them will be less than it is in real life.
Unless you want to take away the Icons on the plane's from the GV'ers point of view. No aircraft type ID and no range.

Meh. Let the Invisible Men stay invisible. No A2G icons, no G2A icons. Friendly or enemy. Works for me.

And option to opt out of friendly icon. Then the spiez won't be able to see your plane from the tower either.
Hmm... Invisible Plane too much to ask for?

-1 to all ideas from here to the start of thread.

+ 1 to the other suggestions
GV's don't need to see what kind of enemy plane is coming.....they can tell the difference between
a Lanc, a F6F or even an A20 by its visual appearance. Seeing what kinda of plane by its icon does not change their outcome.
Being able to hide does.

Note that reasonable minds do differ on this.

as soon as we agree what a reasonable mind is then we can discuss how reasonable minds can differ on it.

Hardware and the capability to configure it to maximize your ability to see dots should not be the single most important aspect of the game.

GVs are my dive bomb targets, nothing more.
I'd like to see ground icons go back to the old way.

I am not a fan of no icons for anything, GVs or aircraft. I used to fly in the AVA often, but not anymore because of this. I agree that no icons makes it more difficult to see enemy GV/aircraft then it was in real life. I do not enjoy spending my AH time squinting at my monitor searching for near invisible planes that I can't see until I'm almost on top of them. Not trying to spoil anyone else's fun, but no icons is just not for me.
I was on a commercial flight about a year ago and looking out the window. Below us was a smaller plane (business jet maybe) that based on its relative size had to be several thousand feet away. I had no trouble at all seeing it or tracking it. I immediately thought if this was the AVA I'd never have seen it.

why not just make gv's invincible to air attacks... that's what the real wish is.

With no gv icons, how would you know the difference between a friendly m4 and and enemy m4?

All friendlies have an icon with their callsign.

While I completely understand your sentiments. Fighting in fighters with no icons will actually help your SA tremendously when you start fighting in the MA again, looking around all over the place to spot an enemy is great SA practice the helps develop immediate non thinking responses when flying around. This means you will be able to better track your opponents as they enter into the engagement process and thus can make better decisions on how to approach the fights.
Also, screen size, resolution, graphic detail, and frame settings are the reason why your perception in real life is much larger than what appears in the game. There are ways to make planes appear bigger and make them easier to see, along with the chat messages.

Heh. Thing is, you don't know how many others you missed!
A year or two ago I was at an AOPA seminar. One of the speakers was an air traffic controller who was also a pilot. She said that when she took her non-pilot co-workers for a ride, the thing they all mentioned was how difficult it is to see another plane in the air. If you know where to look (as you would if you were at an airport), or if you just happen to catch sight of one, it's not so difficult to keep in view. But finding one in the first place, unless it's airliner-size, isn't easy.
Didn't mean to hijack the OP's point that he just wants GVs to be left alone, or at least to be harder to find. I tend to agree with him that planes had difficulty locating GVs that were off-road (i.e. where the pilot wouldn't know to look). It would suit me fine to let the GV people have their own ground war, except that they keep intruding on airfields and shooting at planes. Until there's a way to deal with that sort of griefing, I think GVs should all have large blinking purple icons when they're within one mile of an opponent's airfield.

I would be happy if Freindly GV's were only visible ( from the air) at the same range as enemy GV's

This. Whatever the enemy GV icons, or lack thereof, are set to, so should the friendly GV icons be the same setting.

It's not a new whine. Basically I do not like that a pilot can drag his opponent to friendly Ostwinds or Wirblewinds that the pilot can see ( due to a long freindly range) that the opponent can't see (due to a short enemy range). Our freindly pilot has the same communication tools ( better infact) as would have been found in RL.... Why give him additional "icons" to light up the way?
Further ( and of lesser importance) from a ground war perspective a pilot may spot for friendly gv's because even though he has fleeting sight of an enemy icon he maintains sight of friendly gv's to use a a reference bearing to relocate the enemy gv or advise freindly gv's of the location. In RL the pilot would have had equal difficulty seeing both freindly and enemy.

I do not have a strong view on whether the enemy gv icon should be totally turned off. I did have a strong view that it should be reduced the the range it is now. I would like to ensure that gv's under cover of trees do not reveal icons unduly. I feel that at certain angles they still do reveal an icon that would be better hidden under tree cover.
As above explained I feel that both freindly and enemy icons should be similarly limited.
Whilst on the subject I do not like that the Storch pilot has a magical ability to see further. I would prefer a speed threshold whereby below which observation of GV's was enhanced. Better still make icon range inversely proportional to aircraft speed to a point where the range is as it is now at 175mph lesser at higher speeds and greater at lower speeds. In this way slow aircraft ( like the Storch) has good spotting range due to its slow speed not a magical propert imbued upon the pilot.
Equally aircraft zooming past at 250mph + probably see no icons at all.

+1 Bombing GVs is to too easy.
Icons are over compensation for the small loss of visual acuety in game vs real life. I can see GV from beyond 6k icon range in game, if you zoom and look. the dive bombers won't admit it, because they don't want to have search for GVs visually, they want that giant NEON siogn that makes it easy so they can, at glance, see every GV that can harm them so they can make runs that avoid every whirble while dropping bombs down the hatches of Tiger IIs. " HAHAHAHAHA I ruined that guys day!"
He should at least be worried about a hidden whirble. :salute

Many things we do not represent in present AH graphics , like fumes from exhausts, thrown up dirt when moving, long-lasting smoke that give away a tank from shooting.
In cold weather you can see the heat from tanks showing in the air above it.
Until we have all these features, its a -1.
