Title: Need some musical advice
Post by: Dragon Tamer on March 13, 2015, 09:15:34 PM
So I know nothing about this but I figured I would give it a try anyway (which is the same way I got involved with skinning...). I wanted to dabble in this MIDI thing a little bit and maybe try to put one or two songs together. If I like it enough, maybe I'll keep doing it. There's a problem though... I have no idea what I'm doing. I know nothing about music. My brother does but he's an bellybutton and refuses to tell me because he thinks that he's the only one in the house that's allowed to work with music.

Can anyone recommend some sites that are a good place for me to get started with all of this? I tried looking on Google but it's all French to me.

First question is what midi compatible gear do you have?

If you're talking about mixing and/or mastering music, I think you will really enjoy it.
It's a pretty steep learning curve. (still learning myself)
I'm using Cubase & Adobe audition at the moment.
I don't have an ear for it really, but I have fun trying.

I'm a little lost here.  MIDI: Musical Instrument Digital Interface.

It is a protocol.  A technical standard.

Sort of like saying I'm interested in this USB thing.

What sort of musical instruments interest you?

Do you have an ear for anything?

If you're looking for an easy to use software for composing and producing music, there are many available.

I have the Properllerheads Reason: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ca4J5JlXsgQ

Also Ableton and many other softwares are popular.

None at the moment, I'm just trying to get my feet wet in the area. I have a computer capable of running software and a mic and a set of speakers, should be good starting equipment right?

It's also a file format, or am I mistaken on that note?  :headscratch:

I'm interested in piano and guitar mostly, but for what I was thinking I may need a bit of everything.

I have an ear for notes, though I can't identify them because I don't know how the scale works right now. I'm told that I'm also very rhythmic, whatever that means...

Thanks, I'll check them out once I get my computer back in stable condition.

Player Google Basic Music Theory, Beginner piano/guitar lessons. There is SO much info on music on the net...sure wish I had it when I learned to play guitar. Give me a call (think my # is in the squad forum) or we can hook up on teamspeak.

Learn piano!   It has the largest range and can imitate any instrument with the use of a synth.

Now if you want the girls, learn to play the sax or drums! :devil

Here's my advice, have your wife or girlfriend learn to play the trumpet.  Trust me on this.
