Title: Anyone else get into the World of Warships Closed Beta?
Post by: Latrobe on March 17, 2015, 05:14:05 PM
It's actually pretty fun! I love torpedoes! I caught 2 Battleships distracted by other ships and drove my destroyer right between them and launched both sides of torpedoes, sunk 1 and left the other on 2% health  :devil

Are you going to try to get banned from that as well Latrobe?

My friend signed up for the beta, somehow got in and they gave him a beta key so I got in. If I get a beta key as well I might give it away on here. Don't think I'll get one though.

hehe! Not enough hardcore "this is real life!" gamers in there..... yet. They are trickling in though. Never knew people took Beta's so seriously!!  :rofl

You suck Latrobe... :furious :bhead

I submitted an application, but I won't hold my breath.  The ship I look forward to using the most is the Mogami Class Cruiser. :aok

Then the Yamato, because Super Battleship. :D

I wonder when they will get around to adding the IJN CV's though.  I really look forward to using them for CV action. :)

I love killing the carriers! Nothing a Carrier fears more than a destroyer that breaks through the lines  :devil One match I was hunting down 2 carriers at once (they decided to stick close together). They launched EVERYTHING at!! I had to dodge no less than 20 torpedoes at once at one point!  :lol

Do carriers have planes to launch?  How does that work in the game?
Title: Re: Anyone else get into the World of Warships Closed Beta?

Carriers are kind of like a RTS, with a top down view of the whole battlefield (expect ships are players and not AI :)   ). You set waypoints for your planes to fly to and have them attack targets. Fighters kill other carrier planes, torpedo planes launch torpedoes, and dive bombers dive bomb.

From the numerous yt vids I've seen on CV game play, the dive bombers generally do not do a whole lot of damage, but have a pretty high chance of setting things on fire and damaging turrets.  The torpedo bombers are a bigger threat, but are harder to set them up.  They are what normally take out ships, doing substantial damage and causing flooding.  Torpedo bombers are not as much of a threat to a DD, due to their maneuverability.  It's the dive bombers they have to worry about.

Dive Bombers: High chance of fire, damage/destruction of turrets, easier to setup for runs, best option against a destroyer.
Torpedo Bombers: High chance of flooding, substantial damage overall, harder to setup for runs, best option against everything else.

That be my take on them based off of videos. :aok

I like a couple of the FAQ's...

Q: Will you integrate all 3 projects in one battlefield.
A: No, because it's impossible

They can't do Tanks, Planes AND Ships in one. :rofl

Q: The average dogfight lastedroughly 45 seconds, and small tank on tank fights would not ussually last long either. However ship to ship clashes would often last hours on end, and usually a few ships would be sunk and others damaged before one side retreated. How does WG plan on making battles last only 15 or so minutes?
A: In time period of our game warships already had enough firepower to sink an armored opponent fast enough. History also has some facts about 'oneshots'. For example, admiral-class battlecruisers Hood was one shot by Prinz Eugene during WWII, because of setting ammunition deck on fire. We are very careful to historical details and will tune the gameplay in the way, when player will feel operating a true steel monster.

This bit, well, hmm... :headscratch:  So far it all points to the Bismark as the one who sunk Hood.  Maybe I'm missing out on something??? :headscratch:

Regardless, I am still looking forward to it.  Until War Thunder finally tosses it's hat into the Naval ring, WoWS will be my go-to for naval action. :)  I can't get that Mogami outta my head! :bhead

Me too, but apparently to some people that's wrong. Seen a few people yelling at their team for "sucking" and "losing". Even saw someone say "Nice Armor hack". Not even in full release yet and already the hack accusations fly!  :rofl

Was an alpha tester for WoWP. They as much as told me I was a guaranteed in based on that fact alone.

Call it a long service medal on my World Of account, if you will.

That's because online games do have hacks regularly and the beta phase is when there are probably the most glitches that can be exploited. There are some people who believe there are no hackers in online games but then again many believe in Santa Claus too.

Hmmm, with the pre-order thing for World of Warships available, I am considering it as a way into the CBT.  A little on the fence still. :headscratch:

Oh yeah.  I worked to the Aoba fairly quick, and that's with me being side tracked by the Kawachi long enough to get her fully upgraded. :D  Still dreadful range though. :bhead  It's particularly bad when you get matched against a Kongo in the Kawachi. :noid  But I enjoyed the challenge. :D  I survived the fight, and we won too boot.  So all in all, good.  :aok

When I played my friend had a Fuso and I got the Cleveland. Carrier players did not like us shooting down their entire squadron in 1 run  :devil

Yeah.  CA's are pretty nasty once you have the upgrade.  Having a couple of CA's near a high value target can ruin an enemy CV's day. :)  I still don't know which CA is the best for anit-air, though I believe the Cleveland is up there. :aok

KUMA, not Aoba.  Hell, if I was able to work to the Aoba in a few hours, I would think something wrong (I took a solid look at the tech tree, not just mouse directly over to the Mogami and drool :noid). lol  What???  I got excited (still am), and got ahead of myself. :x

Bismarck destroyed Hood. Prinz Eugen scored hits on both Hood and Prince Of Wales with her 8" guns, but it was Bismarck who scored the fatal blow. They also misspelled Prinz Eugen. So their claim of "We are very careful to historical details..." falls a little short of the mark.

That said, I don't play World of Tanks for the historical accuracy either.
Title: Re: Anyone else get into the World of Warships Closed Beta?
Post by: Volron on May 03, 2015, 09:00:41 PM
Nah.  No way historically accurate.  The ranges on the secondary batteries are WAY short.  For example, on the Kawachi, it's around 3k out before they start opening fire.  On the Kongo, I believe the range on the secondaries are limited to 6k.  WELL short of their actual range.  Their accuracy is very poor, even at point blank range.

That being said, it doesn't take away from the simple fact that it's fun as hell. :D  I wouldn't have bothered to keep track of, then join in on, World of Warships if I wanted historical accuracy.  I'll leave that to Aces High, and in some respects, War Thunder. :aok

Volron, to the right of the battle button in the harbor you'll notice that there's a little box that says co-op...switch it to random battles....you've been fighting bots so far.
Title: Re: Anyone else get into the World of Warships Closed Beta?
Post by: Volron on May 04, 2015, 05:36:49 AM
I'm aware that I've been fighting bots. :)  Their pathfinding is hilarious though.  They will happily ram each other and us, even if on same team, and they have a nasty habit of torpedoing each other as well as players on the same team.  Oh, and they REALLY love humping islands.  There is some work that needs to be done to them. lol

I'm going to give Random Battles a go, however, it's that Aim Assist mod that's kind of keeping me on the fence.  If I'm going to be blasted by someone, I rather it was by someone who developed the skill and/or me making mistakes, not because of some assist mod.

I said screw it and had a couple of matches.  Picked up 2 missions in one match, which quickly went into my Aoba. lol  Would be nice if you could "re-roll" them though.  If I get something like scoring 5 torpedo hits in one match, I'm going to flip. :bhead

Any invite codes around?
Title: Re: Anyone else get into the World of Warships Closed Beta?
Post by: Volron on June 11, 2015, 09:27:13 PM
None.  You will need to buy one of the Pre-Order packs to get into the CBT now.

If you want the USS Arkansas, you will not want to wait around too long.  In roughly a week, they will announce the OBT date, though it will likely be at least a couple of months after before it hits.  Fortunately you will only need 49 battles in either Co-Op Battles or Random Battles, or a combination of the two to get her.  You will get her when it goes OBT.

I'm sitting on 300+ Co-Op Battles and 65 Random Battles, so I will get her come OBT. :D

As a heads up, when OBT hits, EVERYTHING is wiped.  The only premium ships that will remain after the wipe will be the 3 Pre-Order pack ships, the Alpha Iwaki (for those who were lucky enough to get into Alpha) and the Beta USS Arkansas.  Any prem time and gold you get as well, will be refunded in full upon launch.

The 3 Pre-Order ships will remain exclusive to those who got it for a full year after full release.  The Alpha Iwaki and Beta USS Arkansas will NOT be made available at a later date.

Got bored with it already.

It is pure arcade using WWII clothes, and is extremely simple.  The player base demands that all ships have an equal shot at beating the other, so you have 12,000 ton CAs engaging 70,000 ton BBs as equals.  Watching a Yamato or Montana burn to death is absurd.  The devs justify it based on the Battle of Tsushima where the Russian ships (the ones laden with coal in every nook and cranny for the insane trip from the Baltic to the Sea of Japan by way of the Cape of Good Hope) burned readily to the Japanese high explosive rounds.

Never mind that damage control technology on the Yamato and Montana, both oil burners, might, maybe have been slightly more advanced that Russian battleships which were mostly obsolete in 1905.

A bit of work is still needed, no doubt there.  You are not the only one I've seen complain about the fire, and I have noticed fire a bit more common with the recent "buff" to HE.  CBT will be CBT after all. :)

If you were honestly expecting it to be something other than arcade-y, well, don't know what to say.  I watched numerous video's before I decided to buy my way into the CBT.  Latrobe reminded me that it existed, and the video's showed me that I could actually get into it a bit.  There were some informative video's in regards to game play, which really helped in my decision.

If you were invited into it, then you've lost nothing, unless you bought gold. :)

Yeah Lusche, I've been keeping an eye on it.  It's looking to be a good age of sail type game.
