Title: Wingman Mode
Post by: ColTomb on March 21, 2015, 03:11:41 PM
Can somebody tell me what the 'Flight Autopilot Wingman Mode' in the map controls section does and how it works.

It is used in formation flying.

First, set another player as a wingman using the .wingman  dot command.
Fly close to him, then hit whatever button 'Flight Autopilot Wingman Mode' is assigned to.

Now your plane will fly on autopilot and keep you in formation with your designated leader (within some reasonable restrictions). It's especially helpful when flying bombers.

If the lead plane you link up to remains at full throttle you might experience a wobble effect. To fix that just have the lead plane throttle back a n inch or 2 on the manifold. For bombers simply opening the doors on the lead plane will fix this.

Try both you and the other player to set each other as wingmen and then both hit the auto formation button - hold on tight :)

In your experience is it better to go off auto for navigational turns of 90 degrees or more, and does everyone lock up with the lead, or can you do a chain?

Its no problem to turn a formation around, just throttle back a little so the guy in the outside can keep up adn do a gentle turn. even if the planes become a bit separated they will regain their spot after the turn.

Best way to create a tight formation is to fly towards the "leader" and when passing the spot u want to be on u press "ctrl +W" or whatever button u have assigned for wingman mode auto pilot. Then just sit back and let your plane settle in to that spot.

I'll never forget when this feature really took off I was in a large strat run with over a dozen guys in buffs. Never forget when the lead plane was shot down and he didn't bail it dang near took out everyone in the group lol. Live and learn!
