What is it with you and the WIKI? It is just another info site. Most of the info can be found here and on the trainers pages that was in the WIKI. If a squad wants to have a presence on the web they build a squad page, the wiki was only meant for info, and as there are other places to easily find that info I don't see the big issue.
Personally I'd rather see HTC work on almost any thing else than wasting time on the WIKI. Maybe Skuzzy should post the number of visits the wiki use to get. I don't think that number would be very high, but I could be wrong. I'm old school and never bothered much with the wiki myself.
Your obsession with the WIKI and now HTC "wording" is juvenile.

At least we are getting closer to why he has been gratuitously dumping on Hitech over the new AH coding at every opportunity during the last few eye poking sessions by the usual group of eye pokers. Skuzzy is probably as busy supporting Hitech with the alpha since it's Hitech, Skuzzy, and Waffle now from what Lusche posted.
When people publicly demand honesty and truth, then hold up some interpretation of a legal document to justify revenge for their hurt feelings. Especially by an adult over a kiddy game. I doubt they will gain sympathy from the audience they are playing to, or any hearing from whomever the target of their revenge is.
Why not cut to the chase, cut out the drama, and tell us all what the end game is?

Many squads had a wiki page , that information is not available here, but more to the point, the $14.99 that we pay to access the game also includes all the messages boards, including the wiki. Read the TOS, its in the very first sentence. For HTC to say they are repairing it, is just not honest.
The TOS says message board, NOT WIKI. The WIKI was an add-on that came much later.
Here, http://www.000webhost.com/ put your squad info there, its free, and have every one in the squad put the link for it in their signatures. Problem solved.

Not a word about a Wiki.
Here is just one of the common definitions found on the web about Wiki's:
wiki in TechnologyExpand Definition
communications and messaging
Any collaborative website that users can easily modify via the web, typicallywithout restriction, a center for collaboration and communications with common messaging. A wiki allows anyone, using a web browser, to edit, delete or modify content that has been placed on the site, including thework of other authors. This has been found to work surprisingly well sincecontributors tend to be more numerous and persistent than vandals and oldversions of pages are always available.
Text is entered using a simple mark-up language which is then rendered asHTML. A feature common to many of the different implementations is that any word in mixed case LikeThis is automatically turned into a link to a pageof that name, which may or may not exist (similar to the linking in thisdictionary).
-
It doesn't matter how you want to twist wording. The wiki is dead..... for now. Once they get the new version up and running and things settle down I'm sure their intention is to repair or replace the Wiki. However, you trying to brow beat them into it isn't going to work.
Give it up and let it go.

I didnt even know there ever was a Wiki until this thread. A sight that helped me a lot when I joined was Soda's, which helped me prepare for matchups against certain aircraft vs others.

If you go to the aircraft and vehicle forum and read the sticky that Murdr put there about the wiki you will see that it's a player generated deal and not a HTC thing. There are no admins only monitors so please feel free to repair the wiki as your leisure.
HTC only hosted the wiki, the players put it together and grievers had to wreck what was done.
But as I said if it bothers you that much just have at it!

Regardless of what happened to the wiki, it is in HTC's best interest (and the player community as well) that the wiki is fixed and made to look better. New players like such things and AH is not exactly well documented.
Now that HTC added a social media person to their staff I was hoping that she will also improve the wiki - which I consider to be a social/community feature. I am sure that the content can be written by players, but it would be good if she or another HTC person could take care of the visual design to make it more appealing and invite AH players to fill wiki entries that need to exist there or need an update.
HTC website and wiki need to look more modern and appealing if they hope to attract more players with the new upcoming AHIII.

I would and I offered to, however, HTC has denied everyone access to it. You can't get to it to repair it.

In a pinch you can use my AH Notes page. It has a page with all the planes base performance numbers.

wiki has been moved to wikia DO NOT POST ANY LINKS TO THIS FOLDER OR WE WILL CLOSE IT BACK DOWN.
The reason it was closed is because it was doing major damage to our google ranking because of broken links.
put wikia at the end of the HTC domain and you will be there, I have moved it only for the purpose to let people fix the approximately 10,000 broken links. So go ahead and have at.
AND AGAIN DO NOT POST ANY LINKS TO THE ENTRY PAGE.
If it shows up in a google analytics we will shut it down again.

Any chance Skuzzy, Hop, or even a knowledgeable trusted member could post a quick intro/how to regarding how to repair these links? I know many folks, even the PITA ones would be willing to help float this boat, and if 100 guys volunteered to fix 100 links each, problem solved in short order.
There must be someone who is able, or at least knows how to proceed autonomous to HTC since the permission has essentially been given here to try and repair the broken links.
I for one miss it, having used various iPads/iPhones and previous tablets to surf through plane performance and data while climbing en route to fights. Having ample free time, I'd happily volunteer to be a "yes" person, instead of a "no" person on this one. Just need a bit of direction/training and then point me on my way.

I wish it was that simple. Wiki is a whole new language. Learning it is more art, than science. When I did call for volunteers to help fix it, I got two responses. If you can get a hundred people to help, then more power to you.

Did that, but outside links (seems to only take one) seem to cause the crawlers to ignore the robots.txt entry.
Taking it offline was a last resort.

I wish it was that simple. Wiki is a whole new language. Learning it is more art, than science.
I see, that explains a lot actually, I would have thought it would be a simple or common language they would have used. Google yielded few possibilities in terms of a beginners how-to on repairing broken wikis, I just hoped it was a matter of "not enough time", yet it being a common enough problem that average joe could work on. Obviously not the case. I'm still interested in trying to help, I'll see what can be done. I've got 5 volunteers myself included interested already in just a few hours of asking, unfortunately none of us has experience - yet.
I'm a complete noob at it, I'm still trying to wrap my brain around how there can be 10,000 errors on something that says there is 364 content pages, with 2500 or so total pages in the statistics button on the wiki in total, (it says -All pages in the wiki, including talk pages, redirects, etc) for those 2600 odd pages. Would that mean there is on average 4 broken links or errors on each of those 2500 pages to equal 10,000 total? I'm missing something here I get the feeling, can anyone who understands this PM me an explanation of what is happening exactly, and what's involved in fixing it? I clicked through the wikia link HT provided, and in a few minutes of jumping around, I couldn't find anything that glaringly stuck out as a "page not found" error. Again, I'm missing something I think.
I do think it's an important part of the product, and having it repaired, and most importantly modernized would be a good thing and good timing with the new version coming out. I think with the right person (not me) who knows more about this would could take point on delegation and training, I could get volunteers in the double digits working on it weekly.
-
Q. How did the links get broken, and what could stop it from happening again, assuming a group of volunteers have the time and knowledge to fix the current errors?
-
If you go to the "Special Pages", it offers lots of links to things like broken redirects, dead-end pages, double-redirects, orphaned pages, etc.
For example, I see from that page that there are three broken redirects related to Events, because the pages were deleted - aparently due to re-org: (replaced with subpage in Main namespace).
My guess is that it's stuff like this that is causing all the issues, but I have no clue or time to figure out how it can be fixed.
-
I did a little investigation this morning. I am currently running a scan of all broken links and I will post the results when it completes.
There are 2 types of broken links.
1. Links to missing external content.
2. Links to incomplete content on the wiki such as
wikia/index.php/Talk%3AWWII_Naval_War
I left off the HTC url so no it will not produce a link.
After doing some looking I found a way to turn off the 404 error the missing content for the wiki itself. (Type 2.) So
the number of links that will need to be fixed prior to turning it back on will drop.

Thanks Imadot, and thank you HT. A clearer intel picture is now in my noggin.
The number of people getting interested in a "mob fix" project is increasing, I have guys from 2 different squads now offering to help, I think getting enough numbers to make it happen won't be an issue. I'll wait to hear/see more, if some sort of list could be complied with the actual errors/links that need fixing, or even just a bit of help in direction regarding that, I'm pretty confident that with those who have shown interest already along with others that would after a more public request for help.
There is one person I'm waiting to hear from who is away atm, but I know said member is a whiz at net coding including wiki, and has been on various HTC teams like CM/Skin etc. That member would be able to get the rest of us on the path of learning how to help out.

Here is the table of errors wikia/wikiaerror.html on the HTC Sight
Click on the first column will take you to the page with the bad link.
2nd column is the invalid link.
3rd is the text on the page tied to the link (there was some parsing issues so some may be invalid)

If the wiki is messed up that much, perhaps it would be wiser to make a new wiki and copy some content from the old one. This way every page we make, we know is error free. More importantly - we can get the wiki going with partial content and then keep updating it over time, like a wiki is supposed to work.
-
would like to know what traveler is going to to to help fix the wiki. me i would love to be guided in the right direction.

Haven't been able to get to that document, What I did do is in the category Squads, I went through each and every Squad Wiki and followed each link within each page and if the link did not lead to a valid page or Web site I commented out that link, All Squad wiki pages now all have valid links. Many of the squads at one time had there own websites and I guess did not keep them up once the free period ran out. In attempting to look at other pages within the wiki I was unable to effect an edit for lack of authorization level.
I spent about three hours total time over two days. Hope this helps.

That's quite a list, but not as bad a nightmare as I thought it would be.
I guess the next question is, so far as fixing the broken links, does HTC just want them essentially removed if they lead to a broken or nonexistant page, etc?
One example I found, is the Stuga G model with the heavy guns, it showed the link to a youtube video showing the guns in action as a broken link, but when I checked it, the video was working, and I couldn't find any sign of the text from the 3rd column. Again, treat me as a complete moron when dealing with this, as I am just trying to learn it as I'm moving forward, still have volunteers, a couple more now, but still don't have "the" guy I want to who I'm certain knows how to do this and can save HTC the time of explaining it to the rest of us who don't.
This is the Stuka/JU87 example I meant, the video and the link both seemed to work, but I'm either not finding or understanding the significance of the "153" text.
{Edited by HTC}
wikia/index.php/Ju_87D-3> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cU6OK1zSxKg 153
I did notice that if I click that JU87 link from the error list page HT provide, it works, but if I copy/paste it, I get a Bad Title page instead. I'll assume this has something to do with the problem and I'm missing the forest due to the trees.
I am hopeful and have a positive vibe that the community CAN fix this and save HTC the time and bother. Bozon and Oboe have good points, I hope HT/Skuzzy could take a sec when they have time and perhaps make a ruling on those issues.
-
Gman, just quickly. Didn't HT say he didn't want any links? It seems to me that he has been avoiding putting any links there. Perhaps it would be an idea to edit your post and remove the link? Just a suggestion from an observer.
-
I do not see any other choice but to remove the link if another can not be found on external links.
Btw as I said the internal links that show as a wiki page with out content do not need to be fixed.
HiTech
-
Hitech,
Can HTC set up a new, clean, empty wiki? Instead of chasing the errors of the old one and try to make sense of the mess, we can simply make a brand new and shiny wiki. Set it up, place the main menu and sections, then let the community fill in the values. Leave the old one somewhere unrelated to aces high, just so we can copy the useful bits of data from it to the new.
It will be a new clean lean wiki that will grow over time (and hopefully does not get messed up again). I am sure that over time, if you call out some section/value to be added, a few players will be happy to do so and check each other. so it gets built up gradually. The good thing about this approach vs. fixing the old one is that we will have a wiki running quicker. It will have just the basic stuff initially, but will grow. Also, this time let the community know of broken links etc. earlier so they can be fixed before it gets out of hand.
-
The reason it was closed is because it was doing major damage to our google ranking because of broken links.
HiTech
Guys remember the post sometime back that lambasted Hitech over exactly this issue. If you check now with a google search for WW2 Aircombat Simm or game, AH is back on the first search page.
Hosting the player generated, not HTC generated wiki, became a double edged sword since it was the players who were supposed to care for it. HTC granted a favor hosting it. The players dropped the ball and sank HTC's google ranking.
Everything WEB related that is HTC's responsibility, works because HTC maintains their property as a responsible company. Players don't have a payroll or business image to meet. Players come and go and engage in petty disputes for personal entertainment.
Before you make any effort to resurrect the wiki, honestly determine who owns it. And who is responsible for it not impacting Hitech Creations business. Otherwise with no ownership and subsequent responsibility, shutting it down is a sound business decision.

Is there some reason that HTC has to host some internal, custom Wiki? Isn't there someplace out there like the real Wikipedia that people can utilize?

Wikia.com gets a lot of eyes on games due to the nature of the "free" community. You just put up with all the adds. HTC has a Wikipedia page, though DCS is pushing it's boxed products in more depth. Wikia is maintained by their version of Skuzzy and a Wikia presence might help the google search placement. A problem though, WT is already in place at Wikia, while the average gamer audience there is probably a bit younger than the average HTC customer.
So, who actually owns the AH Wiki and is responsible for it's outcome??

You can ignore the ones that start with /wikia/index.php as the broken link. Theses are pages that need to be added in the wiki.
Most of the real errors are at the bottom of the list.

That is where we could run into a problem sorting these issues out.
Hitech said that is a list of all the errors. I checked your page for the line that is wrong and the only way to find it is by viewing the source of the page.

These lines can't be edited by us.

One thing right off, I'm not looking at HTML code. I'm using the edit tools offered by Wiki edit. I selected a squad wiki page and then proceeded to click on each link on the page, the links that resulted in 404s I commit out. For the Wiki page category of Squad, all pages have working links. I did not try to resolve broken HTML code. That would be a different issue.
I have no idea what you are attempting to show me with all the different colored arrows. Using the Wiki tool for edit I really don't see HTLM code. Also, if Wiki Edit is producing incorrect HTLM code, than there is a much larger issue at work here.
-

What I'm showing you is that everything from the red arrow down is HIDDEN from you when you use the Wiki Editor. The Blue arrow points to the link that is bad on your squads page. So while you THINK your page is ok it will still come up on the error list due to this link.

What I am saying is that I didn't enter that link, IF it is generated by the wiki process I don't control that. When I enter wili and sign in, I have to select edit for each item that I change on the page. when I finish and select save or preview wiki generated that html, not me.

So what you are saying is it's a system issue, OR the incorrect reporting of a "broken link" that is causing the issue? Help me understand please.

exactly right. When I enter wiki, I sign in, I open a wiki page and I read the page and select a link, if it returns a 404 or page not found or points to a web site that no longer exists I select Wiki Edit and comment out the link using Wiki Edit and save the page. At that time, the wiki software generates the HTML code as a result of my save or preview action. The Wiki code looks nothing like HTML.

Correct. That is what Im saying with the picture. We can go through the whole wiki and there are STILL going to be errors lines that we can't change. There is something inherent in the wiki that is messed up. That is going to have to take someone with knowledge AND access to the coad to fix BEFORE it can be added back to the site.
-
Have you tried deleting the broken link, instead of commenting it out? The link would still be in the HTML, visible to web bots, just not visible to humans. Maybe this is the crux of the issue.

The first few changes I made I did so by deleting the link. The pages were still listed in his error report.

If as you say there is something inherent in the wiki it's only in the AHwiki, it doesn't appear to be a problem in other wiki's. Did HiTech modify the original wiki code? does it generate non standard HTML? I understand that they would want people to take responsibility for pages posted in the wiki, but if the problem is within the wiki software, that is out of our control.
As I said, for all the squad pages I went through each wiki page and tested every link, for those that I found missing, I commented out the link. And saved the page. If the problem is the HTML that is generated as a result of the save command, that out of my control. I do feel that the report that HT generated is suspect and needs to be reviewed. As it now stands it lists 113thluckystrikes as an error page and I've checked and verified that all links are valid. I did so for each and every squad page in the wilk, removing any invalid links.

The picture I posted is the html coad for the Lucky Strikes page. The "red" link in the picture are those hidden in the page, and the blue arrow points to the bad link on the Lucky Strikes page. So even tho the links you tested are good on the page it will still return an error.
Now, why this bad link is generated I don't know. I don't know enough about the coad for wiki pages ...... which is different for other web pages.... for why this link is there. A simple fix might just be to create a page so that that link goes to one if we can get someone with access to edit the wiki coad. That may not work tho, but its the first thing Id try.

HiTech might want to create one page with no links, a totally blank page with just one heading on it and save it and see if wiki generates a band link and that test page shows up in his report.

Correct. That is what Im saying with the picture. We can go through the whole wiki and there are STILL going to be errors lines that we can't change. There is something inherent in the wiki that is messed up. That is going to have to take someone with knowledge AND access to the coad to fix BEFORE it can be added back to the site.
It sucks that google is counting these when it's clear it's in accurate.
My squads website it on the list as a dead link, but when you go to the page it works fine. SMH

The Wiki code is not altered. The look of the Wiki is all done to the standard options available (color and images).

Interesting if you look at that snapshot of html code that you captured and read down below the error code, you see code generate with "Fugitive" in several places, how could that be, as you say, it's the wiki page for 113th Lucky Strikes? I think we don't totally understand what is generated when you look at source code in the browser.
