Title: GV Icon distance
Post by: JimmyD3 on March 29, 2015, 10:39:25 PM
Is there an Arena setting for the distance you can see an enemy GV from your GV? Does the enemy GV have to be running? :headscratch:

I can't remember the exact distances, but if the GV is stationary, it's something like 1.5K, if it's moving, I think it's 3K, and if parked under a tree, it's quite hard to see as the tree blocks some of the icon.  These numbers change in a Storch.  When in them, you can see GV's icons further away.

I do not know if this is changeable or not, maybe.  I know plane icons can be adjusted with a setting.

There is an arena setting (Ranges tab). In the mains, it's set to 0 for vehicle seen from vehicle. You can go offline or create a custom arena and set the value (entered in feet) to whatever you want. A value of 9000 would show as 3k in the game, 18000 is 6k, etc.

I have changed every vehicle range setting I can find with no GV range indicated in my gv view. I was wanting to work up a sight table for the jagdpanther.

How about using friendly GV to that purpose?

Can you use the .target command?  Then you can precisely set the target at a distance and fire away.

Lusche, I had thought  of that, but was trying to find an easier way.  :D

SCCA, you need that actual vehicle to determine the range via the dimensions of the vehicle vs the Zeiss optics.

Easier than just switching to Knights in offline mode?....  :noid  :D

In theory you shouldn't need a "vehicle", but the dimension and some math. The formula is (Known size (in meters) x 1000) ÷ Mils size = range

According to wikipedia the dimensions are as follows
Length    9.87 m (32 ft 5 in)
Width    3.42 m (11 ft 3 in)
Height    2.71 m (8 ft 11 in)

Refer to this document regarding the Zeiss sight http://www.75thguards.com/ww2online/downloads/Zheriz_Ziess_Sight_Guide.pdf (http://www.75thguards.com/ww2online/downloads/Zheriz_Ziess_Sight_Guide.pdf) for the breakdown of the sight mil size and there you go.

So if the length is 8 mils according to the sight, the tank is 1233.75 meters away

The rings on the target are 10ft wide.

NDisles A16 the 5k high base near the city. Up on the field and drive to the end of the east runway with the 5k drop. Bring up the target at each range you want to calibrate to. Past 2.5k, you will be eyeballing range in this game unless you have ranged an enemy to a land mark and already hit him. Unlike real life, we are limited by the size of the pixels and the illusion of what we see at long range. On average 2pixel = 1Mil. Unless Hitech can convince pixels to illuminate in fractions of the pixel.

So when you goto full zoom, how big is the tank that a single pixel represents at long range if that is the finite for small?
