Title: Turkey time
Post by: FX1 on April 02, 2015, 12:30:42 PM
Starts this Saturday in my part of Texas. This year i am going to try for one with a pistol. Last year was bow only and got a double with one shot. Hopefully the storms dont turn them off. I cant imagine a life without hunting...

Headed to Nebraska with my 8 year old in a week or so.  I'll have my longbow and he'll likely carry his new 20 gauge.

Season goes from April 18th through May 3rd here. We're always late compared to other states. We only allow two gobbler tags (one jake tag for youth) to be taken only by a bow or shotgun (no rifle/pistol caliber). Can't tag two on the same day, either. I use a 10 gauge, longest shot was at 82 yards - I don't like to play around.

Maybe this year they will cooperate better. Last year they would not respond to calling, I had to bag my two purely on ambush. The first one I just sat silent in a field with a "pretty boy" male decoy and two 3 year olds came running up to whoop him around 9am on opening morning. Second one I belly crawled through a creek drain up to a row of bushes on the edge a field where I could hear him drumming/gobbling with some hens. I raised up and shot what ended up being the subordinate 2yr old to the dominant bird. Oh well, he's still around for this year!

We can only use shot for turkey in Maine, not bullets. Will you use bullets or pistol shot shells? What kind of handgun will you use?

I can't wait to get out there. Our season is 5-4 to 6-6. The toms are out back talking and we still have a full snow cover, 12".

We all had luck this weekend. I couldn't believe the amount of birds that have come to mate on our place. I counted 7 groups in one pasture and we have 4 pastures dividing up the ranch. Also we had a bonus super drunk firefight on friday. Spent the rest of the night cleaning pigs until 1am. Fun time but i was really hung over for the early morning hunt..

I was going to post the video but this isn't a hunting forum and i don't want to freak out any Yankees or Brits..
