Thanks to Lyric1 for finding me the info for this skin.
This La-7 was probably flown by Col Vasilii Zaitsev, deputy commander of the 11th Guards regiment of the Baltic Sea Fleet. Zaitsev survived the war with 34 kills and was twice awarded Hero of the Soviet Union.

Greebo,
Every search for Col Vasilii Zaitsev brought me back to Vasily Zaytsev the sniper. In some cases he is referenced as Vasilii Zaitsev.

Gorgeous airplane. Nice job. :aok

Greebo,
Every search for Col Vasilii Zaitsev brought me back to Vasily Zaytsev the sniper. In some cases he is referenced as Vasilii Zaitsev.
Sorry Greebo Looks like the squadron listed for the 11 Giad is incorrect that I gave you after seeing bustr's post I dug around some more.
Looks like it should be 1st Guards composite.
Lesson for every one here is that people screw up & in the case of the OSPREY book I pulled the photo from.
They added an extra #1.
There was more than one Vasily Zaystev that was a Russian hero during the war.
If you notice his name in the translated link below in red is spelt Zaytsev then a few lines lower it is spelt Zaitsev.
Don't know enough about Russian to explain it. This is not even the same guy who flew this La-7 that Greebo just skinned.

This guy has the same name also. Spelt both ways as well & a Russian hero who did fly the LA-7 below.

Vasilii Aleksandrovich Zaitsev, deputy commander of 11 GIAD.

Thanks Lyric1, I'll change the squadron name to 1 GIAD when I submit the skin.

re V A Zajtsev. Would not 105 GIAP be more correct? Which is the regiment he seems to have commanded temporarily
Actually Stalins Eagles also lists him as deputy commander 11GIAD ,formerly called 207 GIAD (note Division {or Wing} ... Not Regiment {or Squadron}).... Neither of these were linked to Fleet Divisions AFAIS.
Why the anchor?
There was a 1GIAD- KBF which would have explained the anchor but none of the histories seem to refer to it or any Zajtsevas a part of it.
Re VV Zajtsev he did serve with 482 IAP which was assigned to 322IAD but would then have flown with red nosed Lavochkins.
Re AA Zajtsev he did serve ( over the Baltic ) with 431 IAP which was assigned to 315 & 283 IAD.

This link has him in the 11th & 1st. 1st being the latter.

Kind of around the map so to say with his history. Another Russian site.

Thanks for all the research on this skin guys. 1 GIAD seems to be the favourite designation for it so far, but I will wait a while before submitting it to see if a consensus emerges.
-
I think the proper designation for 1 guards mixed air corps is 1GIAK. Air corps were specialist or separately designated units not to be confused with Regiments.
Stalins Eagles lists 1IAK as becoming 1GIAK ON 3-18-43 it was based in Beletskij from Oct 42 until the end of the war. No listing of Zajtsev
SE lists V A Zajtsev as Podpolk of 105 GIAP but can give no other history to the regiment.
He is listed as being with regiments 129IAP which became 5GIAP ( with Popkov etc) before being bumped up stairs to be assistant commander of 11GIAD. Which is a Division! ( Wing or Group) Which at the time had many Regiments under it.(Regiments were assigned to Divisions)
11 GIAD was formed from 207IAD on the 8-24-43. It was part of the 2VA and latterly the 17VA (air armies). One of the regiments assigned to 11GIAD was 5GIAP. If you look to the history of 5 GIAP you will note that the Podpolk from sep 42 to April 44 was a VA Zajtsev.
He was replaced by Popkov (see our La5FN skin white 01) This was (some say)
the most successful Regiment in the VVS!
on the other hand 1GIAD was formed from 220 IAD. It is not the same as 1GIAK.
there was a 1GIAD-KBF of the red banner fleet (Baltic) it had regiments assigned to it such as 5,13,&71IAP and was later reformed as 3GIAD-KBF. It is credited with the arial defence of Lenningrad.

Thanks Tilt. I think I'll remove any reference to Zaitsev in the history when I submit the skin. According to the caption it is only that his fighters also had a white nose that links it to this aircraft.
The anchor on the tail is a more reliable indicator that it was part of a Naval unit. Do you know if any of the regiments in 1 GIAD KBF were equipped with the La-7?
-
Yes they had several La7's I will check to see if I can identify them tonight.
I know they had some 3 cannon variants issued to Divisional commanders.
Btw the white tail markings are normally considered to be regiment markings.
-
Osprey and Stalins Eagles are in broad agreement that 4GIAP-KBF (assigned to 1GIAD-KBF ) had some La-7's (Vestik suggests 20). These were issued from Sept 44 onwards. But did not see much combat being asigned to escort duties.
Vestsik infers that both 3GIAP-KBF (also asigned to 1GIAD-KBF) had some La7's
Best choice IMO is 4GIAP-KBF.
-
Thanks Tilt, I will most likely go with that squadron. However I'll wait until nearer the end of the month before submitting it in case any more info for this aircraft turns up.

Very nice :aok
