Title: F4U markings
Post by: Banshee7 on April 16, 2015, 11:55:37 PM
Has anyone ever seen an F4U with black and yellow checkerboard markings either on the cowling, wings, stabilizer,  etc...??  Trying to find one for a fellow guitar player that wants to paint a guitar with a corsair theme including the yellow and black, but he wants it to be historically accurate.  I figured this was the best place to ask.

Thanks

Nothing I'm aware of off-hand. Certainly not during WWII.

US Navy/Marine color schemes tended to be a bit bland, and most ID markings of that sort would have been white.

There were some post-war French Navy Corsairs with yellow and black ID stripes but nothing US that I know of.

If you do resort to to making something up you could use the aircraft shown in this link (http://www.aircraftresourcecenter.com/awa01/301-400/awa334-Corsair/00.shtm) as a basis and just change the colours of the checkers.

I can swear that one of my books has a color photo of a Brazilian corsair with taxi checker bands on the wings and/ or tail. I'll check when I get home.
