Title: Cool piece of history-Spitfire compass
Post by: Ripsnort on April 18, 2015, 03:33:30 PM
My buddy that flies for Alaska dropped this off today. His dad used to own it and gave it to Eric. Eric said he has no use for it and knows I have an office that is aircraft-centric.

He said it is a P8 compass from WW2.  They were used on Spitfires/Hurricanes/ and Tiger Moths. Pretty cool!

Nice.  Needs mounting.
metal isn't the kind of things that I like to mount swoop. But if I find an authentic box that it belongs and I'll buy it.

Was that set for horizontal mounting or vertical? I think horizontal given the "aft" stamping on it.

A little off topic, but I have had this Compass for a long time, I believe it belongs to a ship. Perhaps Chinese or Japanese, any help with age or where it went?

The characters look Chinese more than Japanese, but that is perhaps due to a lack of Hiragana characters.  It is most likely Chinese, but could be Japanese with just Kanji.  Usually in Japanese you have a mix of Kanji and Hiragana and Hiragana are very simple compared to Kanji or Chinese characters.
