Title: Ben Affleck
Post by: zack1234 on April 19, 2015, 04:14:13 PM
Does not want anyone to know his ancesters were slave owners.

Bit odd that?

Why would you do that?

That Pearl Harbour films was my favorite romantic film as well.

i have no idea what my ancesters did or who they were, and quite frankly i could not care less.

I wonder if they had any coin cause i sure dont :rofl

No reason to hide the past, unless Ben was also a slave owner himself.   :noid

You're right about Pearl Harbor.  I always fast forward through those meanies fighting, so I can get to more important parts.  Who cares about some old battle when love is in the air?

The opinions and angst of an entertainer hardly concern me. It's not like he does anything of real use with his life. He makes a living doing pretend before cameras and or an audience. Big fat hairy deal. Why the hell should he not pretend to have a concern about real history when he can simply pay to have it reflect what he wants instead.

So what? Ninety nine point nine percent of europeans, north americans, south americans got their surnames from their owners. We burned down the roman empire, we conquered britain, we conquered the americas and then we conquered the moon. So shut up, open a cold one, light a bowl.

And turn it up.

Odd indeed.  Slavery was legal and common for thousands of years.  Slave owners and slaves came in all colors and ethnicities.  We even had black slave owners in the US.

It was wrong and nothing to be proud of, but I would bet trying to hide it damaged his reputation more than any crazy idea he had that people would hold his ancestors actions against him.

I am embarrassed of some of the things my ancestors did.  hell I am embarrassed of some of the things I did in vegas this weekend with my gf.  trust me what happens in vegas doesnt stay in vegas if you take somebody that posts to facebook every 20 minutes.

and yes I would ask any network to not let anybody know what I did this weekend.  then again everybody on facebook already knows.

Give the guy a break.  Pearl Harbor was an excellent flick.  Watched in Denver when it came out.  Young folks glued to the screen because they did not pay attention in grammar school history classes.  None of us would welcome the scrutiny we seem so quick to bring on others.

I don't think that Pearl Harbor is a good movie.  It isn't one of the worst movies I've ever seen, though.  In that category is Cujo.

Excellent war movies, in my opinion:
A Bridge Too Far
Patton
Lawrence of Arabia
Midway
Das Boot
Twelve O'Clock High
Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo
Saving Private Ryan
Battle of Britain
Downfall

What's great about Danny and Rafe's flying in Pearl Harbor is when they turn right, they lean hard left, and when they turn left, lean hard right - watch closely, it's great.

I wonder what Ben Affleck thought would be SO terrible about the outing of one of his great great great ancestors as a slave owner?  Big deal. Michelle Obama is descended from slave owners, and has been photographed with her extended white family, so if she can accept it, I think Bennifer certainly should be able to.  I wonder if he thought it would somehow be used as "ammo" against him in tabloids or some such, but that's ridiculous IMO, anyone who tried that would be attacked be the rest of the media, so I don't see what the problem was, and why he made such a big deal out of it.  It does make for interesting reading, these leaked Sony docs...

That "Zoolander" was rubbish.

If i ever met Ben i would tell him i was poor and get him to buy us all Occulist rift.

I had a dog called Ben but that is straying from the thread.

Also no publicity is bad publicity.

There were no slaves in Britain it was illegal, hanging 8 year old kids for stealing apple cores was fine though.

Your cruel to your own before you cruel to others, the Japanese were a fine example in WWII.

As you live in Africa, you may not understand Hollywood. For the Americans commenting in the thread, they know exactly why Affleck wanted this hidden; since we can not discuss things of Rule 14, I can't go any further.

Me, too.

Films with other than for the American side are harder to find.  Ones I've seen there include:

Grave of the Fireflies (one of the best, but saddest, films I've ever seen)
Das Boot (great movie)
Downfall (great movie)
Battle of Britain (great movie)
Dark Blue World (good movie)
Yamato (2005 movie, OK movie)
Enemy at the Gates (mediocre movie, the real story being so much better)
The Beast (very good movie)
Tai Guk Gi (decent movie)
Come and See (highly rated -- I hated it and stopped watching part way through)
Galipoli (great movie)
Lawrence of Arabia (great movie)

The big lie at the very end of ARGO was garbage. They released the hostages because they knew terror from above was coming.

And YOU were right about 'transported', the term you eNglish use to hide what you did...
" The Proclamation of 1625 by James II made it official policy that all Irish political prisoners be transported to the West Indies and sold to English planters. Soon Irish slaves were the majority of slaves in the English colonies." Note the word SOLD...

And then you eNglish decided to get nasty..don't back off now, laddie..defend, or rather, pontificate.

As for the Irish slaves, Cromwell specifically targeted Irish children.

“During the 1650s, over 100,000 Irish children between the ages of 10 and 14 were taken from their parents and sold as slaves in the West Indies, Virginia and New England. In this decade, 52,000 Irish (mostly women and children) were sold to Barbados and Virginia. Another 30,000 Irish men and women were also transported and sold to the highest bidder. In 1656, [Oliver] Cromwell ordered that 2000 Irish children be taken to Jamaica and sold as slaves to English settlers.”

   Again..that telling word...SOLD....
Straighten my history out, oh learned eNglishman...oh, and by the by..not Irish, BOY O.
My point being, the eNglish were the MAIN thrust of slavey in the New World AND built your bloody empire on it and the MONEY earned from it, and continue to enjoy the same, Mr 'Transported'. Now a days that would be 'genocide' ol' chappie..

Now try this for size?

Admit 1 single unsavory incident the US has  done in the past 100 years.

You are incapable of admitting 1 single incident.

Now i will wait for the pitchforks and the torrent of self righteous horror :)

Name 1 unsavoury incident without trawling wikapoodia for cut and past options.

As i said in the UK we are told in primary at the age of 8 of slavery, and supplying the rifle and ammo to Lee Harvey Oswald :rofl

And dont come back with the crap Lincoln banned slavery to be nice to black folk :)

And of course no one in the United States will ever own up to serfdom...it's all about the African slave trade, right? I wonder what Americans would think if they really knew their own history?

What?! White people in bondage!? No Way!

Do we still teach real history in our schools, or is our history being watered down and censored?

Manifest Destiny! Yes! Americans of European and African decent decimated the Native American Indians and forced them onto Reservations! Read your history, Americans! I won't go into the Native American history of Tribes against Tribes during the founding of this Nation, nor will I speak of it's outcome other than this: American Indians (Native Americans) are a conquered peoples who live in the United States on reservations by choice and by Treaty.

It is family history for me, and I am not responsible for what my ancestors did - so I see no reason to seek to hide it as Ben did.   Way back in our family is the Captain of a cutter in the US Revenue Service (which eventually became the Coast Guard).  He did a number of operations down on the Florida coast supporting US troops against "hostile Indians" (the Seminoles) in the 1830s and 40s.  Funny thing is that my father and I both are named after him.
