Title: The Time the US almost Nuked..... North Carolina
Post by: DREDIOCK on May 01, 2015, 06:32:03 AM
As Ive been watching the news and rhetoric over the last over the fear of terrorism over the last 14 years since 9/11. I always remember we've lived, or at least some of us have lived in far more dangerous times. Back in the early 60's for example. I remember in grade school we had two types of fire drills. On where as today when the bell goes off we all line up and calmly walk outside.
Then there was the other drill where we all lined up and walked down into the school basement and stood under a sign that looked like this (http://img.groundspeak.com/waymarking/display/aa0dc936-1454-42ba-82a0-239af57e27b5.jpg)
I remember conversing with my 1st grade classmates about why we were down there and the thing a nuclear bomb could do. We werent scared. But we were aware of the situation. Probably like today moreso then parents think.
So. I dont fear terrorism. Any terrorist attack. Even nuclear is likely to be very local, or confined to reasonably small areas.

Lived in Florida during the Cuban crises. During the height, we had to carry bagged lunch in case we had to be bused to bomb shelters.
Another note there is an atomic bomb lost in the shore muck off the coast of Georgia after a midair collision in late 50s or around then. Pentagon says best to leave it. Some say it is armed some say it is not.

Same thing in Western Maryland, we lost a B-52 carrying Nukes. Some of the crewmen died from exposure to the elements, as it was winter in the mountains. IIRC http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/1964_Savage_Mountain_B-52_crash

I was stationed at a base where a Titan-ll missile blew up in its silo. The warhead that was flung out had a yield of 9 megatons. I had nothing to do with it tho and never saw it. The Bomb was recovered, its safety features worked perfectly. Now if we have had such issues imagine what the Reds have had.

What's also scary is that if the Goldsboro bomb had detonated, on whom would the US military/government have put the blame? Surely they would have pointed the finger at foreign spies. What can of worms would that have opened up?

It's incredible that one switch was all that stood between a bomb in a tree or a giant hole in the ground. I'm also amazed that the other bomb is still buried out there.
