Title: Some People Have No Idea
Post by: MWL on May 09, 2015, 07:29:00 PM
Greetings,

Found this in the comments section on an article about the DC Flyover:

I recently attended the funeral of a hero who was a ball turret gunner in WWII. His daughter made mention of what she said to him after seeing "Saving Private Ryan". "I sure am glad you were up in the air Dad, where it was safe." She said he just smiled at her and said "Yes, my love" and left it at that.

I first laughed at the ridiculousness of the statement - then realized, she really didn't know.

I think part of that stems from the current state of affairs, and how we're always talking about american air superiority. I know I for one look at the situation with ISIS and think "Thank god I'll be doing 700kts over their heads..."

Don't worry.  Isis has migrated to Michigan.  They just met k-razy..

On the other hand that really didn't work out so well for that Jordanian pilot a little while back.

Very true. However, thanks to how rare those situations are, I've noticed there is little if any attention given to the concept of losing an aircraft to combat. I'm not saying it's not possible, quite the contrary, I'm just saying it's something we tend to forget is possible.

well it depends.  was he a ball turret in the early days of the war or in 1945 when there wasnt many german fighters in the air.  I guess we'll never know and she could be right or could be wrong but really we dont really know the answer.
