Title: Drone Revolution
Post by: PR3D4TOR on May 14, 2015, 10:01:31 AM
I've followed the various drone related threads on this bbs for several years and noted a lot of skepticism towards the usefulness of this technology. Perhaps it is just a result of the "old fart" dominated age demographic here, but the things that were only science fiction a few years ago are becoming reality. And faster than ever. Autonomous machines will become an integral part of peoples lives, and sooner than most people think.

Meet Lily. You can buy one for $499.

I for one welcome our new robotic overlords...

That's actually pretty cool. I wonder how it would do following a car at an auto cross event.

Unfortunately thats what many people think. If not that then Battlestar Galactica or Star Trek, the Borg, or some other nonsense. Even calling them "drones" is a mistake cause they only operate with a human in the loop. Fact is we are a lifetime away from creating AE if such a thing is possible at all.

What is possible is using remotely piloted air craft to bomb the snot out of terrorists and save the lives of our own troops and citizens. Luckily this CNC we have in now has seen this logic and the Terr's are scared out of their minds of some USAF officer in Nevada sending a Hellfire missile into his little terrorist party. This "secret war" had done more to save lives then any other aspect of the fighting.

Im a big believer in the tech.

It is not very quick and with a 20 minute flight time and two hour recharge, it really is not suitable for auto events.  At least, that is what we decided at the local Cobra club when we were out looking for a drone.

Forget that other stuff.  You want one of these:

Should have the endurance for just about everything in your Cobra club.

That one cannot stop as fast as we need and would draw unneeded attention. :)

We are in the process of specing a custom unit.

Check out the 3drobotix IRIS+.  It is more than fast, and agile, enough to follow stunters in a lot in my rider's club.. should be plenty for an autocross event as well.. full all out track? not so much, but with a top speed int he 60mph range, it does pretty well... and is the one I have.  I plan to try doing some video of me riding on the road a bit this summer, can let you know how it goes.  20min flight time, yes, but swappable batteries, with about 30 minute charge per battery...

My big dislike of drones just comes from the fact that I don't want them to take my job lol (A VERY real possibility as you've pointed out). That being said, that quad copter does look like a lot of fun!
