Title: Best band I cant understand
Post by: DREDIOCK on May 18, 2015, 09:22:07 AM
First some background
About a year or so ago I was giving a buddy of mine a hand supervising his crew on a job. His crew, (I'll be nice) consisted of people from central and south America. Needless to say all but one doesnt speak a whole lot of English. and despite my last name I dont speak a word of Spanish. We did manage to communicate one way or another or through the one who was bilingual
But thats not what this is about
We get to the jobsite and get set up and I see them getting ready to plug their Iphone into a speaker system to listen to their music. Now like I said. I dont speak any Spanish and typically I can only take so much of the music they usually listen to which is about 5 minutes worth.
So I say to myself. "ohhh no. Im NOT dealing with this, and I go and get my jobsite radio which can easily drown out what they have if I need to. Just as Im getting ready to plug it in their music starts playing. Its some band playing live and the melody starts playing and I'm thinking. This isnt too bad. I'll wait till this song is over. Then the next song started playing and Im thinking the same thing. and the next. And the next after that. Almost 2 hours goes by and I still havent turned on my radio. I cant understand hardly a word the performers are singing but so impressed I am with this music that I asked them who the band was.
I now have no less then 6 songs from this band on my play list and I STILL hardly understand a word they are singing. Its just great music.
Just goes to show how some music can transcend the language barrier.
BTW. the bands name is "Mana"
Listen to this tune in its entirety and tell me you dont think its a good song
Do try to ignore the pants LOL
Here is the studio version. a bit cleaner sound wise

From a Spaniard perspective, it's a bit funny you say you are surprised you can like a song you can't understand... Here that is the norm with respect to English language bands :)
In Spain, if the song is good enough, not knowing English is not a barrier even when at singing...
...at least for the most adventurous among us:
:D
...
There are better Maná songs, or at least more catchy, I think. E.g.,
Spain hasn't exported much pop/rock :frown:
For America, only Macarena trascended enough, though :cry :D

Another one that made my playlist.
I just like the sound of this band. Song to song to song to song. They really have a great sound even without being able to understand the vocals.
Thing is. If alot of their songs were adequately translated into English. They would probably be smash hits all over again.
Unfortunately some songs such as Amor Clandestino do not translate well at all into English. Least not any translation Ive seen.
Oh and I LOATHED Macarena. Though every wedding I go to seems to play it

Which is a shame considering all of todays Guitar music is a direct result of what the Spanish did to develop the guitar. Prior to the Spaniards getting hold of it. The guitar was little more then a mandolin.
