Heh, so now the controversial update has activated.

I have used Win10 exclusively since oct/2014 and I like it far better than Win8

I have played AH with two computers equipped with Win10 (and its different revisions along the months) and my experience has been very good. On other games such as BF3 it was not so smooth, punkbuster stopped working for a while and the new browser is not able to run the web launcher at all. But that's not an issue since you shouldn't be using IE/whatever the new browser is called anyway.

It is to reserve your free upgrade from Windows 10.
It will download, when it's available. (done?)

Of course Windows 10 will have to be installed over Windows 7/8/8.1.  To install to an empty drive is simply invalid advice.  As I've said, the little icon in the taskbar
is only to reserve Windows 10.  It will download when it's ready.
Please relax, it's not the end of the world.  Just a bump in the road.

If you know for sure, could you please tell me where you've got that piece of information? I based my advice on a well documented fact about Vista and 7 including their Service Packs. Currently I'm writing this on my Win7 which I installed on a brand new empty hard disk from an upgrade DVD. And I'm old enough to remember that the 9x series upgrades had to be made over a previous version. So if you know for sure that Microsoft has changed their upgrading policy again please would you share the information? My sources haven't revealed any information about the final release yet.

My idea of installing on an empty drive is simply to leave the alternative of going back to the familiar version if the new release doesn't work as supposed. The latest news I've seen about 10 was problems with AMD graphics and if they don't get properly fixed until the launch there'll be a whole lot of less happy gamers.

What I'm getting at, is in order for Windows 10 to be free for it's customers they have to already have Windows 7/8/8.1 installed.  If that's true, then installing on a clean hdd may or may not be an option.  This could be my lack of understanding, (wouldn't surprise me) but how would Windows 10 know that you have another version of Windows installed, if it's on another drive?

If you opt for the upgrade you get an activation key in the e-mail. After that you can (and should) do a clean install.

I've read that the Windows 10 upgrade comes complete with a (mandatory) free installation of Candy Crush Saga!  Such a deal!  (Ya, I know, you can probably delete it after the install.)

If that's the case, I couldn't agree more.

That's what I was thinking about as a possibility. At least the Win7 upgrade versions sold on optical disks include an activation key.

The one I have installed is "designed for Windows Vista" which I've never used in my computer and includes both 32 and 64 bits disks plus one activation key. I wonder what will happen the fourth time the key gets used, it's been installed on two machines so far.

As for a modern Windows 8 computer, doesn't the activation key get saved somewhere in the UEFI? At least that's the case in some brand computers, in case of a hard disk replacement the reinstall can find the activation key from within the computer, allowing a clean install. In such a case there'd be no problem to prove the existence of a previous version.

Only the OEM computers store the key to the BIOS/UEFI. For us home builders nothing changes.

The procedure is familiar already from Windows 8. For a period of time you could purchase Win8 license for 40 bucks a piece. If you put in your details, you got an e-mail containing a product key. You could then download the installation ISO, dump it to your USB stick and install Windows using it. I got Win8 for my uncle and for myself using this method, now I'm kicking myself not to purchase more of those 40 buck licenses.

It would be really easy to do a system clone the day of the download, and then run a dual boot for some time (from separate hard drives). That would be well-advised anyway, since the first release of new versions has historically been less than superior in every case up until now.

Actually the latest news I see about the upgrade is that you may need a base OS install after all. It may or may not be possible that you can first install Win10 without a valid product key and then 'upgrade' from there.

An email just came in from MS, pointing me to this FAQ:

Yup, Coincidentally my chrome browser stop responding at the same time.   I don't believe in coincidences.

It appears after this update is installed: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3035583

If it annoys you, or you don't want Windows 10 installation files downloaded in the background between now and late July, then un-install that update.  If you know you don't want to have this, then don't allow that update to be installed in the first place.  If you want this and aren't seeing the taskbar icon, go to the Windows Update feature and install that update specifically.

Ripley, you mentioned that you have been running win10 on a couple of different machines, have you noticed that the DVD function of the OS is disabled? I've heard that this is also the case with win8 and 8.1 because of some licenses that MS didn't want to pay for. Do you know of any workarounds to this issue?

I thought it was because Windows 10  has the DVD player option disabled because Microsoft decided not to include/add  "media center" like they had included in Windows 7........ Microsoft decided to give the user the option to use a 3rd party application/program  example like: VideoLAN VLC Media Player or similar software...

please correct me if I have misspoken........  I did not bother to go search for the included/excluded features list url link I read recently, comparing  Win7/8/8.1  to what Win 10 will or will not have, and the reasons they decided to go this route.......

hope this helps

considering that you liked win8 more than you liked win7, I would really say you are a suspect...

there has been a a few threads about win7 compared to win8 and win10.  I think it's easy to say, I am gonna hold on to win7 for as long as I can.  if they stop support 4 or 5 years from now then I have no choice but to buy win10 or 13 or whatever they sell then and pay additional amount to have the same functionality that win7 now supports for free.

just hope ubuntu gets easier to use by then.

Yes, Microsoft stopped shipping support for playing back DVD content in Windows 8.1, and later.  Saved them some licensing fees.

For Windows 8.1, you can buy the Windows 8.1 Media Center Pack (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/feature-packs) if you want to stick with a Microsoft solution.  Microsoft no longer provides this as of Windows 10.

Or you can rely on a third party solution.  Cyberlink's PowerDVD (http://www.cyberlink.com/products/powerdvd-ultra/features_en_US.html?&r=1) solution is considered one of the best, but it is not free.

A free third party solution, such as the one from VideoLAN (http://www.videolan.org/index.html) is also a possibility.

I never use the DVD for playback on my PC. I don't even have a DVD or any other optical drive in my gaming box. As Skuzzy said the playback is not disabled, you just need to get an app to do it.
