Title: Polish Valor
Post by: Groth on July 11, 2015, 04:35:53 PM
I have heard and seen the snips at Polish forces.... Any that would doubt their valor, or that of the French, who so valiantly carried the fight to the germans...you have earned my contempt. Make yourselves scare, I name you, my enemies. JGroth

Poland and French freedom fighters were heroic during WWII. The repercussions of their capture did not deter them from fighting their enemy.
I will honor always both. And don't forget the Philipinos and the Turks........and others I may have missed. Great heroic people.

From what I've been reading lately, the French fought very well in North Africa immediately following operation Torch. The French infantry were willing to fight, but hamstrung by poor leadership resulting in them being terribly under supplied, and badly led. It is unfortunate that they get a bad rep now days.

So these three pow's escape from a stalag and head off into the woods. Theres an American farmboy, a British Aristocrat, and a Pole. Soon the prison camp dogs are after the escapees. The farmboy comes up with an idea to help them avoid recapture. "Climb a tree and when the dogs come for you, sound like an animal" says the farmboy. Up into the trees the three men climb. Soon the dogs come to the farmboys tree, "whoooo whoooo whoooooo", he sounds off. The dogs leave the supposed owl to its own. At the tree of the aristocrat they hear the whistle of a whipporwill. Once again the dogs leave satisfied that there isnt anything in the trees but birds. They come to the polllacks tree, the man thinks for a moment and offers,
Moooo.

I have a small library on the subject of the Polish Forces during WW2. If you want to read a good book on the overall history of Poland during the war, I would suggest starting with "The Eagle Unbowed." It's a very long read, but filled with a lot of historical data.

Thanks Groth. :salute
I'm very proud of my heritage and of my family who fought and some died in both the Polish and American armies. I learned a lot from my grandfather before he passed and I cherish to this day the lessons he tried to teach a very stubborn young man.
The Polish achievements during WW2 are often overlooked because of the political atmosphere after the war. Some of the most amazing feats I've read are from old books. There is no way to glorify war. The Polish fight for freedom is an epic story that began in 1939.
Not to stand on this soap box too long, I just want to share this last parting quote that has been commonly used, "For Your Freedom and Ours". I often take the time to think about this simple statement. It's on the Polish Hussar Monument in Doylestown, PA. It stirs great emotions that makes my Polish Heritage very special for me.

Please read this book (http://www.mybook.de/images/any/9780813125596.jpg)
During World War II, Hollywood studios supported the war effort by making patriotic movies designed to raise the nation's morale. They often portrayed the combatants in very simple terms: Americans and their allies were heroes, and everyone else was a villain. Norway, France, Czechoslovakia, and England were all good because they had been invaded or victimized by Nazi Germany. Poland, however, was represented in a negative light in numerous movies.
BTW "Polish Jokes" it is same propaganda
and this... (http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51lzyFVhz1L._SX318_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg)

This politically correct society BS makes me sick!
It was a joke! Like the dumb blond jokes, the yo momma jokes, they are nothing but humor. No I'll will is meant by them.
By the way, I'm mostly of French and polish desent. I have 2 uncles that were Marines, 3 Navy, and one air force. All but the Air Force one fought in WWII. I take no offense to Sims joke because I am smart enough to know that it was a joke.

Gabby spoke Polish of course. Made him valuable to the 56th!

Let me clarify... I saw in country text buffer some comments..... They were not ment as harmless jokes, by my standards. I am not Polish, and the French is distant. I perhaps over-reacted. But I feel not. I do not suffer courageous, overwhelmed people being degraded, perhaps my failing. JGroth

I haven't read that one, I have read "Question of Honor". Polish-Lithuanian (used to be the same nation) ground forces were also particularly valorous, Monte Cassino for example. Beyond WWII there is the American revolution and of course the Battle of Vienna. Poland was one of the first secular democracies, that is why there was such a large jewish population there.

It was not a politically incorrect joke or statement; it was stupidity and ignorance and yes bigoted. To label an entire people, nationality or ethnicity as dumb, stupid or whatever implication, is not even close to the same vein as trying to figure out whether it's "handicapped" or "disabled" or "challenged" this week.
The reason it was bigoted, it's in a public forum and the entire world can read it. I'd bet we may even have some Polish among us (not by heritage). His follow up statement was even more revealing about his true feelings and evidence that that he probably even feels that way toward Pols.
Now if two people (or more) who know each other want to carry this kind of stuff on amongst themselves and no hard feelings and it's all in good fun; no harm no foul.
Tell the same joke and insert "black guy", how would that have fared? Why is it different Fugi?

Did you quit reading after the first line? I AM POLISH and I wasn't in the least bit offended because I can tell the difference between a joke and a bigoted statement. I guess you can't.

Nope  I read your post.
Apparently you are more pc than you'd like to believe because inserting another nationality other than the French or Polish is quite ok in your book, but those two are ok to make fun of. Again maybe re-read my last line; you know exactly what would happen...
Btw, my Grandmother was full Polish :ahand

As to your last line, it shouldn't be any different. That is the issue with politically correct. Everyone needs to grow up and put their big boy pants on and learn to get along.
SOME blacks get ticked about being "labeled", SOME polacks get mad at jokes, SOME blonds can't figure out they are being teased, SOME rednecks seem to live in the 1800's. If SOME people stopped complaining about being persecuted, and the media would stop running stories that do nothing but try to get people ticked off about one thing or another maybe everyone could get along.
I have, to use these "labels", polish friends, irish friends, black friends, puerto rican, friends and we have all grown up around each other and we have never been anything other than "people" to each other. All these "labels" and people taking issue with them is the problem. Grow up!
oh btw, my Grandmother is full polish too, she was born just outside of Warsaw.

Gentlemen, Lets look beyond what was posted and focus on what the original post was intended to honor. This is a reflection on the bravery and heroism of the Polish men and women who fought in WW2. From 1939 to 1945, the Poles fought in every theater of war. Yes, the Poles fought (although in a limited capacity) the Japanese as well. Witold Urbanowicz is credited with shooting down two (2) Japanese fighters when he flew with members of the 75th Fighter Squadron in China. It was claimed that none of Urbanowiz's planes were ever struck by enemy bullets.
Poles are a very proud and patriotic, even to this day. This discussion is to honor their memory and sacrifices. :salute

There is a new amazing for me in this thread and this forum, it simply stuns me at how so many people get so upset over something that actually did not impact their lives in any sort of way. Their righteous indignation is breathtaking. I think some of the posts are patently comical considering this thread as a whole.
Not a single one of you took a moment to ask what I thought of POLISH FORCES, and that was the main point of this thread! Many of you automatically jumped to a conclusion that I was racially biased and based that conclusion on a frigging joke! Which one of you people are going to take up for the American Farmboy? How about the British Aristocrat? I am stunned to see that so many of you did not bother to defend their honor as well as the Poles! Seems like an amount double talk was at play with your anger......................
I'm done here.....

Sim: say it was just a joke then follow up with inferring that mato & groth "must be" lovers and then you reiterate that if they aren't lovers then (inferred stupid) poles [sic]. You are done here? You posted the joke, now you're playing victim? Twat, yes that's probably apt here. Why? You are still trying to defend a position in which you decided it's funny to you, so it must be funny to everyone else.
Fugi: never affected me? I can remember both my Grandfather and Grandmother telling me about how they grew up with signs in stores about Polish need not apply & Irish need not apply (and both as Catholics need not apply). The fact that they were strong influences in my life, yes I'd say it affected/shaped me to a degree. As I stated, if ppl who know each other well want to engage in this in good nature with each other that is entirely different.
Obie: I only wish the thread wasn't tarnished right off the bat by a stab joke and the common perception that Polish are stupid. It would have been a great thread to honor Polish valor; sadly that is not what happened as you and countless others who haven't commented have witnessed.

Btw, in spite of being criticized for marrying a Polish woman, my grandfather started with nothing and eventually started a meat packing plant in a small town in central IL, turned that into 3 plants. He later acquired the best restaurant in town and Inn and did remarkably well for himself.
He made the American dream a reality and helped a little to put 5 kids through college without spoiling them too. All of which became professionals and talented in their trade(s). All of those children, daughters included (also including all of the male grandchildren) put their/our time in at the plant; his children much more so than the grandchildren. But all the males in my family have worked from the pen to killing floor to cooler to freezer and loading.
You probably know about as little of anything like this as except for maybe the scene in Rocky where he's punching qtrs of frozen beef.
Failed; he did not, except that he worked himself to death literally.
