It's been awhile since I've posted. I went away and became a Combat Engineer and spent some time blowing stuff up. We were doing a cleanup after our last demolitions range when I discovered at my feet this little gem.

Anyway, after waiting several hours for EOD, they came and blew it up for us. Anybody want to take a stab at identifying it?
We were thinking tank or artillery shell, but definitely a projected projectile with a fuse and a frag sleeve.

I wish I had the pictures with dollar bills used for reference that we sent to EOD. Its about 2.5 feet long, maybe 3-5 inches in diameter. I was hoping there were a few old Abrams/Bradley crewmen around.
FLOOB, I don't know about the old Eskimo. I never flew under that handle, but I think I remember seeing some of his posts in linked threads from the early 2000s. You might try to look up his name here and look at his last posts.

It could be. Apparently it was an old tank range but I wouldn't doubt artillery either. It didn't look as short and fat, but it could explain why the fuse looks like it was pushed into the nose of the projectile so far. Thumped into the ground and failed to go off.

I doubt it's a tank round. The only tank round that has a fuse like that is the beehive round (talking 60's on to now) and I highly doubt that they would have used it on a range since they were and are a "go to war" munition. The tanks have target ammo, inert rounds, with the same ballistics as the real deal stuff. The Beehive round has a timed fuse that is set by the loader to make the shell explode a distance from the target which releases a cloud of flechettes towards exposed infantry. Mainly for longer ranges beyond normal 30 cal MG ranges. Turns the main gun into a giant shotgun for extended ranges unlike canister. I've seen a beehive round but never saw an inert version (would be painted blue) or fired one. We typically fired 2 kinds of shell, sabot and HEAT (a shaped charge round). HEP (high explosive plastic)was pretty much dropped with the HEAT round tanking up both armor and bunker busting duties.
