Title: Digital pic help
Post by: Maverick on July 27, 2015, 12:16:39 PM
I need a new program to use for my digital photo's. Previously I had been using Adobe photoshop 3.2 (free) on my old system. I downloaded it and installed on my new system but then it locked up. The registration system is no longer functional so I can't download the "unlock" code to continue using it as Adobe no longer supports it.
Can anyone recommend a good basic photo program. I don't do anything very complex but I do like sharing online at times as well as e-mails. I have several years worth of pics backed up and can't dump current pics to the 'puter since adobe is locked.
Free preferred, what can I say, I'm cheap but will consider a paid download from a reputable source. Not interested in Adobe as they want a continuing monthly payment for forever to use their system.

Wouldn't the old code work with the new computer, too? Or haven't you saved it in your mailbox or even on a paper?
If so, and if your old computer is still working, there's programs like the free Belarc Advisor (http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html) that can read the license codes for many programs.

Old code is gone deleted many many years ago.
I downloaded gimp. It has issues. The help section won't install. I downloaded it separately and got it to open. It tells me how to do all sorts of things except how to import photos from camera or other sources. How to load photos etc., in short it doesn't seem to be very intuitive either. Once a pic is loaded I suppose it will have tons of things I can do to it but first ya gotta get the pics into it.
What I need is a basic SIMPLE digital photo editor that will allow me to download the pix from the camera, store them in some retrievable format and do minor simple editing.

What you really want is Adobe Photoshop Lightroom. You can still buy version 6 (non-creative cloud) as a one time purchase.

Windows itself has the tools for getting the pictures from your camera, or you can get an inexpensive card reader to do that. If your camera doesn't directly co-operate with Windows, the manufacturer has a program for that. Windows Photo Gallery which is included in the Essentials 2012 pack (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-live/download-windows-essentials#wetabs=we2012) (you don't have to install the other features) can do quite a lot and is SIMPLE.
Picasa is another option, especially if you like to share your photos online.

For basic exposure changes and such I use Google Picasa. Easy and fast.

Bizman, got the windows photo editor. Not quite as "polished" as the Adobe starter version but I can work with it, thanks. It did find all my pics and I now have access to them. It also recognized my camera and downloaded pix without a hitch. :lol
Going to delete gimp, still can't get the help menu to open in the program even after downloading the help file and installing same 3 times. Opening the help file outside of the program didn't have the info I needed. It never would find photos or recognize my camera. :O

The 'file->open' or 'file->open location' didn't work for you in Gimp? It's super simple to open an image in Gimp. Also did you try the Adobe site where they give you a free serial code if you own an older photoshop version?

Glad you got things running. :aok
BTW I'm currently running a project digitizing my dad's old slides. The slide scanner I have seems to get dusty after every slide, plus there's dirt and spots in the slides themselves. The "Repair" function works miracles in removing small spots.
