Check back on his pedigree........especially the one that goes through "mr. prospector" and the one that goes through secretariat.

If you trace back far enough, you will find many crosses of st. simon which, of course, leads to pocahontas who is likely the most important part of many long runner's lineage.

If you trace all the way, you will see many crosses of "regulus" and "eclipse" though the "stormcat' in his recent lineage has historically been a recipe of "big name, small performance".

A very important horse in his pedigree is "sampson" as well as "hautboy" back in the 1600s.

Great pedigree for stamina, size, and ability to build muscle.

With proper training and peaking....................

valentino's been dominant for a while now.. i still think cristiano ronaldo is the best pure athlete, although he didn't do well at the world cup he still is considered the best in the world, you're not going to take the ball off him unless the stars are aligned and a comet is expected too, he'll beat you to every 50 50 balll, he'll win over you everytime, ok maybe not everytime, but usually, thats what makes him great, however, the world cup exposed the portuguese players that are not in the same vein as ronaldo, that don't play up to par like ronaldo, but thats ok there's always the next one....

Ronaldo is 30 and at the top of a sport that, in my not so humble opinion, is for soft nancies who like falling over a lot and crying until the referee awards a penalty.

Rossi is 36 and is at the very top (ie currently leading the world championship, and that's a real world championship, not an American world championship) of a sport that riders compete in with broken bones regularly.  Rossi has been at the top of this sport for....what is it now, 15 years?

If Ronaldo is still considered #1 in the world when he's 36, with no signs of slowing down, then I'll consider him as a pretender to Rossi's throne......unless Rossi is still around at 42.

rude to what the game is about and know he hasn't been a top it for 15 years he went through a dry time when he wasnt winning the champioship like hayden and stoner were so he's not perfect either.....

Rossi is also an athlete in a sport where you must continually improve or be left behind.  You must also learn how to use new equipment every year.  You have to change how you play when some young whippersnapper takes everyone up to the next level with an improvement in technique.

Physically the sport is as demanding as any of the top sports out there. And it is a sport where you must push past the limits of your equipment and risk a grave injury to find the new limits every year.

He is about to or already complete 50 triatho

Just look look up how long a triathlon is. And imagine doing it for 50 days while your family travels along with you.

INSANE

Funny thing is, Roger federrer is 33 and still #2 in the world. But he is just too old now. Djokavic is taking names. But he still don't got the rep yet like nadal or Fed.

LeBron James springs to mind.  6'8, 260ish with the speed and hands that many point guards would like to have.  I'd think his athletic talents would transfer pretty well to just about any other sport.

I agree, LeBron James is a great athlete.  His talents would absolutely not transfer to the World MotoGP Motorcycle Championship.  He is too big to effectively use the bodywork of the bike to aid in the aerodynamics necessary for high speed, and motorcycle racing has physics that equates to 4 pounds per horsepower.  For every 4 pounds heavier you and/or your machine is than your competitor you need 1 more horsepower to equal out that increase in weight.  Even this does not factor in the extra wear the extra weight creates on the tires which degrade quickly as the race goes on.

Well yeah.  He wouldn't be a very good horse racing jockey either, but with apologies to any jockeys we have in AH, I don't really consider them athletes... at least not in the classic sense of the word.  I know the sports world has gotten very PC in the last 15 years, but not everyone that competes in a sport is an athlete, IMO.

I would bet that Rossi runs 5 to 15 miles everyday!   Plus he has to weight train and anaerobic exercises just to stay in condition. As others have said he must continually adapt to changes, not just every year but often from race to race.

The most fit athletes are usually motocross riders, boxers and footballers{soccer},I would add motoGP riders with the motocrossers.

My vote would be Fred Couples......... :devil

That's one of the problems about judging who is best, because it's a lot like apples and oranges. The parameters that make one a successful basketball player don't necessarily translate to other sports. A lot of it is even reliant on body type.

I think one interesting contest is the Ninja Warrior obstacle course, because it tests strength, agility, and short term endurance. But then again, some of the athletes you've mentioned wouldn't get out of stage one, because the course requires some skills, like grip strength, that they don't have. But the course doest test long-term stamina, like soccer or distance running

There are other activities, such as stuntmen, dancing,, parcour, and the like, that require tremendous athleticsm. There were arguments that Rudolph Nereyev was the best athlete of his time.

One name that should be on this list is Bo Jackson, who played simultaneously the NFL and the MLB, and was an all-star at both.

I would have said something in the other thread, already said enough there and for whatever reason that dude singled me out...I suppose it could have been me singling him out  :rofl

Soon we'll have a fresh season, although I think you guys have dominated for too long, it sure was nice to see the Patriots make Richard Sherman cry; priceless

I know nothing about soccer or motocross sports its seems is being discussed here, but I think Chuck Norris & Christy Brinkley win everything still.

you could make an argument for mario gotze the german that scored the final goal in the world cup, hey he got it done when it counted didn't he?  And yes Lebron is an awesome athlete but is he athletic as a soccer player I doubt it.  Dunking a ball when your 6'8" and doing a bicycle kick for a goal off a crossing pass are very different athletic skills....

I have no idea if he could bicycle kick a soccer ball or not, but he'd be an outstanding goalie I bet.

That i agree with 100 percent, goalies tend to be taller larger individuals... the closest to Lebron that has been out on the field that I know of is Peter Crouch from England..  he's listed at 6'7" and he's seen limited success even with the height advantage.... he played forward

I guess the way I see you question is could the athlete in question be retrained to excel at other sports, thus showcasing his natural talents.  A soccer coach that lights a fire under a 9 year old LeBron James is going to have a less difficult time making him into a top notch soccer player than a basketball coach is making Peter Crouch an NBA all-star.

At any rate, I'll take Greatest Athlete of All Time for $1100, Alex. Who is Bo Jackson.  Even LeBron's physical skills look paltry compared to a man that not only played, but excelled at two pretty different professional sports.

True true give credit where it is due, Bo Jackson was abnormally athletic but we're talking current best athlete not past athletes.  And that is completely false false false about being trained to be an athletic star while young, Peter Crouch could have very well been groomed to be the next Larry Bird if he really wanted to.. please don't go around spreading anymore false information, you should do less betting and more thinking reality....
Title: Re: american pharoah never heard of him....
Post by: Muzzy on July 29, 2015, 03:06:33 PM
But what are the parameters? I'd be looking at:

Strength: raw physical power
Stamina: energy over the long haul.
Agility: quickness, speed.
Intelligence: ability to choose the right course of action while under pressure.

Other qualities like leadership, individual achievement, etc: are helpful to look at, but if you're going to discuss different sports it helps to judge each contestant by the same standards.

lol... you admitted LeBron would be an outstanding goalie, know he's already the greatest basketball player on the planet,  should know he'd have likely gotten a full ride to Ohio State in football had he chosen that sport, and you're telling me to stick to reality after speculating your boy Peter Crouch could have been Larry Bird?  C'mon maaaaan.

i have to say to you the same, c'maaaaan man because because neither you or I know what Peter Crouch could have been had he played another sport, he was 6'7" how many 6'7" soccer players do you see out there, he would of found a better fit on the basketball court where his size would be more of an advantage, c'maaan you just don't have a clue so why play mr. negative.....  Crouch was actually a world class player, and played for the English National team...  was he outstanding no... but who's to say he wouldn't have been playing another sport, especially one that rewards height like no other...

Personally, I feel like soccer players are overrated and tennis is underrated.

Mental strength, physical endurance, no team work, no coach to ask, its mono y mono do or die.

Also, people like Anderson Silva who train for months on a fight, only to get brutally beat up and risk of death.

I think Travis Pastrana is a pretty badass athlete in motor sports.

That guy I mentioned doing the 50 triathlons in 50 states and 50 days, who isn't doing this for money, is also something to admire.

Right, but how many of these athletes can play 9 matches in a row, 3-5 sets every time, close to 2-5 hours per match, never leaving the game, never coached, and have to be more consistent than the guy on the other side who is also a professional.

I think Roger Federrer and Serena Williams blow these soccer players out of the water.

The basketball championships are pretty long and brutal though, I do have respect for that. But they take breaks, get coached, and use teamwork so, you are only as good as your team is.

You saw the former NFL safety who coached LeBron in high school listing him as one of the top 5 best receivers he's ever seen, right?  I mean he mentioned Jerry Rice ffs.  Do you know who Jerry Rice is?  Speaking of, I submit to you he's a better athlete at 52 years old than Peter Crouch is right now.    :)

why should I he is the master of the most athletic sport on the planet, he doesnt need to do two sports, he's won championships with different clubs he's won the Ballon Dor twice, why waste your time on another sport when your completely dominating one...

I see Lebron with his legs soaking in ice water after basketball games... he'd probably be on a stretcher after a soccer game... try running 5 to 10 miles in cleats tell me how you feel after..

You got Roger Federer who has won 17 grandslams, has made it to 26 finals of grand slams, won wimbledon 7 times, is arugeabley the most mentally sound athlete in the world, and is currently still #2 in the world at the age of 33. In one of the most competitive sports in which doesn't involve teamwork or coaching. A soccer match is only 90 minutes long. Gland slam matches are pure sprints for 3-5 sets, most lasting 2-4 hours, and then have to play 9 other matches in 2 weeks Vs harder opponents. I just don't see how a soccer player could compare.

they wipe their face after every break in play, if you factor in all that time i wonder how much "sprint" their actually doing at the end of the day

Soccer players get long breaks when one of the more dramatic ones fakes a severed spine and flops on the ground before walking off under his own power.  Although to be fair I've never seen your boy Peter Crouch or Ronaldo do that.

Peter Crouch is not my boy, I singled him out because he is the same height as Lebron and played international soccer, and never say someone can't do something because the way they look, if you ask me I wonder how the guy played international soccer but he did cuz he was good enough.  Who's to say he wouldn't be even better on the basketball court.

And in soccer you don't get free throws, so if someone is going to be dogging you the whole game the ref's got to know about it.

And Cristiano is my boy because he dominates a more athletic sport than Lebron

Cristiano has more scoring titles than Lionel Messi so I consider him the better individual player

 Greatest athlete was Jim Thrope!

Played several sports and competed in track and field in the Olympics.

Had his medals taken away because he made a couple bucks playing football.

    :salute
