Title: Does anyone else have a cat or dog that is a terror?
Post by: craz07 on August 16, 2015, 10:34:27 AM
My cat, it started off when he was 8 weeks old and I picked him up.  My first real pet so I had no idea what I was in for.  A little scratching on the shirt when i went to take him from the guy giving them away... no big deal, it's a cat, they have claws.  I get home with him and while removing him from the vehicle he hooks into my ear deep.. now i'm bleeding profusely and carry the cat inside and I believe whacked him on the nose for that move cuz no cat is going to have free range of clawing me till I bleed.   So then time passes and its bath time, I'm scratched to hell by his razor sharp claws.  Long deep scratches that make me look like I was in a knife fight.  My friend at work reccommends just nipping the ends of his fingernails. so they are not razor sharp.   I do this, but soon realize that this is simiilar to bathing the cat and puts me and now the cat in jeopardy if i cut in too far...
When we first happened along being outside again since I got him from his prior owner, I encouraged him to go outside and play.. He was apprehensive at first but with my encouragement he was soon outside engaging in and enjoying the outdoors.. So long story short, after 2 battles with flea infestations, numerous foggers, sprays and carpet powders.. And bloody bathing battles I have him locked up in the house for good.  When I have money for advantix I'll put it on him and still allow him outside, but since its not really in my budget I tend to keep him in the apartment..   Problem is he destroys everything when locked up, the carpet near the front door is chewed up.. the window blinds are broken.. and even my clothes have been destroyed by his claws.  I admit I've had to physically discipline him to get him to somewhat comply.
I still love him dearly and for the most part we get along but darn I would never think one little cat could be so much of a terror..  I'm thinking I never should of encouraged him to go outside originally.   I believe he's had kittens as I saw what was a younger female cat that looked just like him outside in the area...  So now he bawls at the windows looking to I guess associate with his kittens or the mother or both.
Through all this 4 years later, he is still my main man and we've been through a lot together...  We still have playtime together with his toy mouse and he still cracks me up with half the stuff he does... If he escapes the house he always comes back sooner or later probably because I'm his meal ticket, but I just hope not with fleas again.  It's a lot of hard work and patience taking care of a pet.  Regardless, this cat is ruthless and is a terror to be feared!!!

When we had cats, we'd train them with squirt guns.
Scratching furniture, spritz! Soon they learn and you don't even need water in the bottle any longer, just have a spritz bottle in the rooms the cats like to tear it up.
They were also not allowed on any furniture or tables UNLESS someone was sitting there, then laps were okay. Same theory, water bottle training.

We have never lived near any major roads that may pose a threat so our cats were always initially indoors, then Indoor/outdoor cats. No litter box once the transition occurs. On week long trips we'd just leave the door cracked in the garage, mass water and food, and their Kitty Condo outside in the garage.

They were always so thankful when we returned you could guarantee a few dead birds or moles or mice would be dropped on the porch the following weeks.

Another thing that never hurts when they're kittens is picking them up by the scruff of their neck. It lets them know that you're the momma and the cat tends to respect you more. It doesn't hurt them but rather in some cases is soothing to a kitten.

Nothing wrong with a cat kennel if you're going to keep the cat inside all the time and not be home during the day. The only issue with cat kennels is you have to start them young and ignore their pleas to be released in the middle of the night. They'll eventually quiet down but ONLY if you ignore them. They won't need a litter box inside the kitty kennel either. They won't poop where they sleep.

I had a Siamese that I trained to fetch a soft fluffy ball. People used to call him "Dog Cat". :)

I keep him in the bathroom with his litter box at night, the first several nights he meowed till he went hoarse.. now I think he actually likes going to his room at night... albeit he been scratching at the door lately, I never wanted to neuter my cat, now I have to deal with the consequences I guess...

There is a TV series called 'My cat from hell' on Animal Planet. Don't know if you've seen it. I've watched a few and many people have similar problems with their cats. It might be useful to watch a few episodes.

Actually  I notice there are back to back episodes right now on the channel.

Funny story about my first cat I had when I moved out on my own.
It was an indoor/outdoor cat, transitioned off the litter box to do his thing outdoors.
He had a couple of accidents but all in all, it only took a few weeks for the transition.

One evening I was drinking too much and the cat decided it was time to go out at 3am while I was asleep.
He jumped up on my covers, kneeding the covers with his paws (his signal of "Let me out axehole") and I brushed him off twice onto the floor.
The 3rd time he sat on the blankets covering me and pee'd right there. "Not letting me out? Piss on ya!"
LOL! I was so pissed but then realized it was MY fault for not listening to him.

FYI, we can't have cats where we live  now. The eagles or coyotes would get them.
They'd HAVE to be full time indoor cats and I'm not ready to deal with that at my age. :)

Over the years with many cats I have found that cats don't respond well to physical punishment.

As Rip mentioned the spritzer bottle works well though.

I just never envisioned giving my cat away to a cat shelter, which I don't plan to.... so he gets a bit scratchy sometimes, no different from estes... he's a cat I don't believe cutting off his nuts will make things better for him... well maybe in estes's case

I think you totally missed what he was saying, cats like to go outside the cat smells a female cat in heat next thing you know you got baby kittens everywhere that's why you get your animals spayed and neutered.

Definitely get him fixed. It will help calm him down a bit. Cats sometimes have problems with displaced aggression but there are ways of mitigating that. We had one cat who would fly into a rage if she got agitated. Once my wife stubbed her toe really hard and the cat came in and went right after another cat that was just standing there. Another time there was a cat fight outside our house. Our cat was watching it and when we came in to see what was going on she went after us both.

Eventually she calmed down considerably as she got older. She was a very sweet cat most of the time and very smart. Ironically, she loved playing with our hamsters. Never tried to eat them but treated them like they were kittens.

It also reduces the chances of cancer, helps cats live longer and reduces aggressiveness and the desire to roam. There are programs that can get you a reduced price.

Stop bathing your cat.  Cat's do a fine job of it themselves.  Sheesh... people and animals these days.

 :huh Really?

As long as you're willing to take care of your cat, and all of it's offspring.

we try to work with eachother as crazy as that may seem...

Yes this is crazy. You are the owner the cat is the pet.

my brother has a neutered cat and all it does is roam outside has a flea problem and kills living things all day.. so nuetuering doesn't solve the problem...

Neutering does solve the problem, at least your brothers cat isn't producing any more cats.

bathing the cat drowns all the fleas have you ever had a cat?

Bathing does not drown the fleas.

Title: Re: Does anyone else have a cat or dog that is a terror?
Post by: Muzzy on August 16, 2015, 05:26:10 PM
Actually I did get one at the supermarket, and there are s lot of good reasons for keeping a cat indoors and having them spayed or neutered.

Bathing helps keep fleas down but it won't kill all the eggs, so you will likely have a recurring issue unless you use a topical flea repellent.

+1000 and for the record, getting your cat spayed or neutered is the responsible thing to do. It turned my male cat into a couch potato instead of roaming around getting in fights and what not. It appears the gene pool has grown stagnant, whose got the chlorine?

So he's already had a litter of cats so what's going to stop him from screwing another cat and on and on and on that's what animals do, if a female cat is in heat and he roams outside he will find her and there will be another litter of kittens. As far as cats yes I've had a couple of them and they were all neutered to prevent them from impregnating female cats that are not spayed.

I have 4 indoor male cats and none of these problems.

Letting cats outdoors is eventually many $300+ vet visits and possibly kitty leukemia or cancer. There are some cancer issues with cats due to common cat viruses. Never bring home a grown cat versus a kitten or teenager, thinking it will adapt to you and give up being itself. You have to spend a lot of time with them to create a relationship. Kittens, you still have to have a relationship with them for their first 18 months kind of like high maintenance girlfriends or having a child. If you spend the time and effort, by age two they stop being problems. Cats also have emotional and personality changes about every 2-3 years until they reach 6 or 7. The big one is "today I am a man", but, in my house the youngest one got his arse handed to him and straightened out by the older 3.

If you don't pay attention to your cat, you may end up getting wizzed on in your drunken stupor because you don't want to bothered with the responsibility of litter maintenance. I have a Litter robot to take care of that.

Get a dog if you don't feel like putting the effort into having a relationship, which is what it takes to end up with a pet cat your friends envy you for and tell their friends about.

Every Christmas one of my boys brings me all of the tree ornaments as high up as he can reach one by one while I play Aces High. He builds a little pile of them next to my computer chair. My wife puts them back and he starts all over again. I have one with a shoe fetish for my wife's shoes, he likes the smell. Another one can talk a Siamese to death. And my Maine Coon the youngest, waits until 4am to plop down on my chest to use my chin for a head rest.

Each one has a unique personality with unique requirements to be friends with him. If you don't become friends with your cat, your cat will decide you are useless and treat you that way.

So does your mattress still smell like cat pee?

No by gods good grace he has never peed anywhere but the litter box except when he had a foot injury from being outside. He pissed in his little waterproof bed which I just threw out because I didn't want him getting his foot all sandy so I blocked his access to the litter box.  He's actually a good cat I love him, but he can be a terror at times.  Mostly all to do with flea infestations.  If you've lived through an infestation you know how bad it can be.  Thats why I don't let him go out anymore.  He's already had his litter, he doesn't need to go outside anymore.  Unlike Estes who is an incompetent troll that goes outside with chlorine everyday as if he is somebody important..lol

Oh and I used the bottle squirter on him last nite when he wouldn't stop scratching at the door to get out, usually I would just let him scratch till he lost interest, but I instead gave him a few spritzes and he was done scratching for the rest of the night. Worked like a charm   :)

My little girl is not a terror but she can be a huge pain in the butt sometimes.

She is an English Cocker Spaniel and is absolutely glued to me, especially if we are out of the house.

This weekend we took her out on the boat on Friday night.  Just before it got dark my daughter and her friend swam her over to a beach to pee.  She refused to pee.  I figured she must have gone in the water and got her back on the boat.

1.00am I wake to her crying.  The cry that says "I have to PEE!!".  We have 8 people sleeping on the boat, 7 of whom are out in the open.  So, I have to get up and either swim her to the beach or find an alternative.  Long story short we had to pull up the air mattress at the back of the boat and lay down a towel.  Fortunately she understood and duly peed on the towel, which I then rinsed in the ocean and with fresh water.

At 1.30am the entire boat was awake thanks to her.  She went back into the cabin, jumped up on the bed curled up and went straight to sleep.  The rest of us were not so lucky.

No shes not, she's just being normal... unfortunately it turns everybody elses world upside down everytime she is normal and has to pee  lol

I've been noticing my cat becoming more and more docile with age, he's only 4, but still a lot less rambunctious than he used to be, and also a lot less scratchier since i've whapped him a few times for making me bleed.  One of my other brothers had his cats claws removed, I believe he is strictly an indoor cat.   Sometimes I wish I did the same to mine and kept him indoors... nah he's my buddy my pal my friend, I couldn't do that to him...

No shes not, she's just being normal... unfortunately it turns everybody elses world upside down everytime she is normal and has to pee  lol

She could have peed on the island or in the water on the way over.  Instead she did as you say and turned everyone's evening upside down.

Love her to distraction though, nothing she has done annoys me for very long.

Here she is right before the girls swam her over:

Crazy,

Every 2-3 weeks I clip everyone's claws. Two of my boys will lay in my lap and let me trim all of the claws. Just takes time to build a relationship with cats. Some people don't want to bother with it or don't know the need to exists. Others get their cat to have a relationship with the cat, and that fulfills the needs of both parties.

When you watch the episodes of my cat from heck, unless the cat is too far mentally broken, the obvious problem is the person got the cat to pay themselves unlimited love and attention on demand. Dogs come pre-wired that way, cats don't. So the fix is to spend quality time with the cat every day creating a routine the cat can rely on for attention paid to the cat's needs. You then accept what the cat is willing to give back, which is often a lot if it feels it's needs are being fulfilled.

When you are at the point you need to use a squirt gun, you've been behind the curve since you first brought your cat home. And then, the squirt gun is for attitude adjustment mixed with a smidgen of revenge. And unlike a fiery romance with a crazy girlfriend, you don't even get makeup funsees to relieve the tension. Ehh, maybe around the time your cat hits 5 or 6 it will ease off driving you nuts.

Maybe I'm exaggerating the terror part a little bit for drama's sake, he is mostly a good and obedient cat, we just had a little bit of a rough start together when he thought he was going to have free reign of slicing and dicing with the claws...  Now he rarely gets a claw on me... Oh and there's the matter of he's been an outside cat so wants to go outside every now and then..  I guess I should just budget for advantix and hope he doesn't bring in any fleas in again.... Sometimes I really wish I kept him an indoor cat from the get go, but my heart wouldn't let me keep him inside and told me to let him explore the outdoors... Maybe that was wrong, it's my first cat so I'm learning.  Maybe my next pet I would make some different decisions.. I know he is happy and healthy though, I can tell when I play with him he's always up for a go with the mouse on a string.. lol he's a funny basterd too.. well you should know you have 4 of em!!
