Post by: WWhiskey on August 25, 2015, 01:07:37 PM
A few people have asked so I thought I'd post some new pictures since the partial rebuild!

It has a 502 BBC, with a turbo 400, the axles are original with the 44 inch boggers.

This is what it looked like when I found it! Pretty sharp!

I saved some of the bed for the new floor

It was a sharp truck before but I'm really liking it now,, a whole new personality!
We shortened the wheelbase 26 inches

Had to do a little search to figure out what the G-506 is. Now I know. Very nice piece of history indeed.

Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chevrolet_G506) told an interesting fact: Russian supply capability improved dramatically in the spring and summer of 1943, mainly as the result of the 151,053 Lend Lease G-506's. Thus America helped Russia to fight against Finland. As we know, just a few years earlier Finland bought a bunch of Brewsters to fight the Soviet Union. Was there a conspiracy? By supporting both sides, maybe they'd eliminate each other, allowing the U.S.A to easily take them both... <what would be the correct emoticon for this kind of nonsense?>

I was surprised u had the stock axels. They are strong enough to support those big o tires? I understand your's for mud pulling but what is your axel ratio?

On my M37 they are 5.9, so at 55 MPH I'm running at 3000 RPM. I got a NV4500 and I'm sourcing 4.88s and I hope to cruise at 70MPH at 2,600RPm which is about as much you wish to pull out that IHC 345.

the original axles are the same as later 2.5 tons except front loaders, instead of top loaders, the GMC version of the same truck was a 2.5 ton with three axles unstead of two!
The ratio is around 6.14 to 1 and will stand a good bit of horsepower as seen in this truck we built in the 80s with around 2500 HP

Same axles!

I have 33s I think on my M37, I wouldn't dare going higher but maybe I can. God knows :) I don't need bigger anyway. I wanted to go Dana 60s to get 37s Humvee wheels, disc brakes and a highway friendly ratio. But the hell with it, it's a camping truck anyway, we'll just go slower.  :police:

the stock dodge axles should handle 35s easy enough maybe 37s, but anything bigger would need the D60, I do run a D44 with 40 boggers in another truck but its got some top grade axles in it.
The GM axles in a 506 are slightly stronger than a 60 or a 14 bolt, but also a good bit heavier, About 400 lbs for the set!
I have a friend that runs a D60 center with Gm military outside hubs, it's a custom built rear steer piece, the axles shafts are special order and cost around $3400 for the set, they claim to be unbreakable ,  we shall see!
