It should take you directly to the post that someone replied to. The post should also be highlighted.

When I click the "New" button, at the thread list, it does take me to the first unread new post in that thread.

I assume you are talking about something else.

However, we did not write the SMF bulletin board software and so are highly limited in what we can do with it.  Sure, we could hack the source code up, but then we would break the ability to do updates issued by SMF.
