At least half the time, maybe more, when I exit AH by clicking the quit button, the screen freezes. It appears to log me out and close out the game, but the graphics stick on the screen. I can hit CTRL+ALT+DEL, start task manager, and as soon as I hit Task Manager the graphics minimize and it gives me an error message.
It's not a terrible issue, but is there a workaround for this? Is this common to anybody else?

That is not normal behavior.
In all the years I have run this game, on all the computers I have run it on, I have never had that happen before.
Cleanup of the video display, after a program exits, is the responsibility of Windows. If the screen is not being restored, there is a problem with Windows or the various drivers installed.
Now, locking up I can see happening, especially if if you have Norton, McAfee, Kaspersky, or AVG installed. None of those are game friendly and even disabling them does not get rid of the problems that can cause.

I have run into this with one of our guys. He had used msconfig to turn off startup programs, and then uninstalled a few programs without re-enabling the startup group. Thus, when he performed the uninstall it left bits and pieces in the registry and the system did like Krusty's on exiting AH and got unstable in other ways.

Okay, that narrows it down a bit. I'll see what I can clean up. I don't think I used MS config to turn off more than one or two minor things, so that at least gives me a place to start.

If you haven't already you can run the MS web update for DX and see if it updates any files.
