This thread, historically, has been titled variously as "Detune Range Channel" or "STHU" or "ad nauseum".
I just reviewed one thread from 2014. In it, good points were made both pro and con.
In the primary arenas:
The best recommendation from the 2014 thread was brevity. Not the GI Joe code words, but the self-control part. Keep the chatter down to only what is needed as it pertains to the battle at hand. If you want to talk about your crate engine...bring it to the bulletin board. I'd love to read about it here.
In Special Events:
Especially in FSO - A little tart (sometimes gross) banter is a tradition during climb out. It gets real business-like and quiet when a merge is right around the corner. My squadron has been out-bantered on many occasions. I didn't think that was possible!
So this is just a reminder about what we (all of us) already know. Stay focused on your own game and don't distract your teammates is good advice, I think. Like a lot of people, I also need a reminder like this.
The practical matter is about the comm buffer. If it gets filled up with BS, you will surely hear the "Check Six" sent to you only after you are already in the tower wondering how you got there.

Nope....I enjoy talking to the folks around me...... The day I have to just talk about what is immediately going on in the game at that moment, is the day im outta here. Don't want to hear it, mute me :neener:
On a side note, id love to talk about the crate engine in my charger....But I think that would derail your threaed. :D

Brevity is a big thing within squads.
During FSO, we actually use an alternate comms method. This allows us to have INSTANT comms when it is critical and we police our own within that channel.
There is no way possible to fix the local chat from getting flooded and I wouldn't have a desire to do that. Many good laughs with people not in my squad. It is like meeting new friends on the playground.
I personally don't clog the local channel and try to only communicate on it if I have to relay information to someone I see in a fight or something to the effect. But I am not much of a conversationalist unless I know you. It isn't that I am being rude. I just don't talk much unless you are on my squad channel.

Don't want to hear it, mute me :neener:
Kinda gotta agree with that for the most part. My general behavior is I'll chat if cruising, but if there's combat in the area I'm usually into the whole brevity thing.
I get both sides of it and would never tell someone to shush, but I will squelch people at the drop of a hat if they're talking too much for me. It's a great tool, I wish more people used it and didn't see it as admitting defeat or whatever reason it is they don't believe in using it.
I also hope AH3 bumps the squelch list size up from 10 or whatever it is these days.

This is not good.
If you don't speak on range, certain people can't record you talking about them while they shade to eavesdrop. Then, their youtube videos won't have any entertainment value. Very important.

two very different environments in this discussion.
FSO's
I personally want all the banter to stop 10 minutes before launch. This is because I seek the immersion of the event. I'm trying to put myself in the reality of a WW2 Luftwaffe pilot. I am he for the next 2 hours. I am under orders and have an assignment to complete. Communication from the 10 minutes prior to launch until engine off and back in the tower should be the minimum to accomplish the mission.
MA's
Totally different. This is the game and I want a little friendly non game banter. I enjoy saying hi to my friends, especially when landing or taking off from bases not under duress. I want it minimized when engaged especially over a busy environment like you find over an enemy or friendly base under duress. I wish the GV's had their own channel for this type of gameplay. What they are doing has very little or nothing to do with what myself and my fellow fighters are doing. I bet they are thinking the same thing sometimes "I wish those pilots would shut up so we could coordinate our attacks and defense". I would also like to see more of my countrymen call out what they are encountering when they may be far from the action. I try to do this too. "B17's, 25k at 10 6 4, heading NW" for example. You never know when there is someone who may also be in position to become involved and make the game play better and more coordinated. Many of my fellow Knights know I enjoy defending strats and generally bomber hunting. I get numerous PM's from those folks and I really appreciate it.

Squelch is something I had totally forgotten about. It's like highly-directed involuntary brevity in reverse-sorta.
For the benefit of others:
How does squelch work?
Is it persistent or do you have to rebuild your list with each log-in? Perma-Squelch?
If I squelch AKTap (I'd never have to, of course), does that mean he can't hear me if I 'check' his six?
If I squelch AKTap, would he know that I did it?

It's basically a dot commans. .squelchMax They don't know it's happend and once you log out of the game, the squelch disappears.

... and when they log out it also disappears. Nothing typing .squelch Midway, the 20 minutes my buffer is filled with :x again.

Gotta wonder if ole Middy had the highest number of squelches of all time...close I'm sure

<nag voice on>Hey Bailey, shut your<<nag voice off> :D

Bailey - thanks man. I know what it took to say that. If it was you that was smothering up range, I know I could say something. But it has never been you.

If you've ever flown over a base with a ground battle or spawn camp going, you might like this idea:
I would suggest having TWO range/local channels: one for air units, and one for ground units. You would default to the channel based on the vehicle type you have chosen, but could manually tune (or switch) to talk on range to the other type (air or ground) when needed/desired.
This would keep the "watch the high 190" and "check six" air-combat chat in a separate vox buffer from the "upper on the spawn" or "T34 on your left" chatter of the ground battle. In my experience, it's when the two are going on at the same time that the delay in the vox buffer becomes a real problem. Plus there is some basis in reality to it working this way.
My two cents, anyway.

I like this idea but I wish I could also listen to both if I wanted to.
So 3 options for range
- Push Air
- Push Ground
- Push Air/Ground

This needs to be made a wish...+1 :aok

A RL military pilot friend of mine (now retired) says wingmen are only to speak when asked a question by lead or to announcer "Lead, you're on fire!" or "I'll take the fat one!"

Generally the Arrows banter on text, mostly with OddCAF threatening to send me film on supposed infractions by GreyGooz (we're building a case before we send it up to JAG.) We try to reserve our channel for combat vox, although a little conversation does pass through.

In the meantime keep your ck six button mapped, too many long winded types flying in and around furballs.

I Like the options for chatter, air ground or combo platter.I'm also :police:going to start charging for check sixes, no more free loaders.
