Title: Anybody Live In New Mexico Willing to Help A Transplant?
Post by: VanceVP on September 08, 2015, 02:32:50 PM
I know that this is not the typical kind of post that you expect to find here on AH, but I am desperately looking for anyone that lives in the Albuquerque area or Southern New Mexico that might be willing to help out a transplant.

Having lived in Albuquerque for many years and then moving to Pennsylvania, I am trying to find out if someone in the area would be willing to get their hands on Hatch green and red chili and ship it to me all at my expense? You have no idea what it's like to have the chili and then not have it. My wife had family that would ship on occasion, but that is no longer an option so I a trying to find someone who would be willing to do this once a year.

We have checked out a couple of places on-line, but their prices seem awfully high and then add shipping to drive the cost even higher.

Since the season is about over, if anyone is willing to find out what a bag of un-roasted Hatch green chili is going for as well as the weight, I would really appreciate it. And if you have Paypal, that would make making payment easier.

If anyone is willing, you can contact me thru my personal email:   vancevp at zoominternet.net

Thanks in advance

Vance, the Wegmans by my house in NJ had a huge promotion of Hatch chili peppers this past weekend.  They were roasting them in the big drum and grilling corn on the cob for 2 days straight.  If you're in PA, there should be a Wegmans nearby.  If not, I can run over to the store and pick some up and meet you in PA.  I'm in PA on business a couple times a month.

Next Hatch chili event in NJ is in Cherry Hill this weekend.  Across the river from Philly.

Yankee67 . . . unfortunately I live about 30 minutes north of Pittsburgh so I am no where close to you in Jersey. I appreciate your info and offer, but we had a guy ship us a box of green chile a few years ago that he claimed was from Hatch, NM and it was the worse chile we have ever tasted. Also, if Wegman's is roasting the chile, that won't do us much good either. I needs to be frozen right away or it will go bad. That is the reason I am looking for un-roasted chile from Hatch, NM. That is the chile we grew up on.

Again, I really appreciate your offer, but I got to be 110% sure that it is specifically Hatch green chile or the wife is going to have my nuts in a vice.

Hope you understand   :-)

Maybe this will help

I'm in PA as well..... But a Maine transplant (born there moved down here when I was eight)  spent my summers there until I was about 21 and went off to college .     I can't find anyone in the state to cook a lobster to save their life LOL.......and if I go to one more restaurant that try's to pass off what they make and call it a lobster roll,  I'm going to climb a tower with my rifle      :furious

I hear ya . . .

Nothing beats the taste of authentic Hatch green chile.

and we have already checked out the link you provided and unless someone lives out there and is willing to price and ship, that will be the route we will have to go.

PA sucks when it comes to GOOD food! I love a good lobster, but I'm not even going to waste my time looking for any place that knows how to cook it. It's the same thing with GOOD barbecue. So I now have 3 smokers and a grill and I am learning to smoke meats the way I like it.   LOL

Vance, if I buy 5 pounds fresh this week, will you take them?  Let me know what size order you want.  I stopped by produce about 45 min ago and the fresh Hatch chilis were still there.  In the white Hatch boxes.

Opening this thread, I never expected to see this reference to one of my personal addictions.

I grew up in El Paso, Texas and now live in Germany, so I feel your pain acutely.

Fortunately - my wife is a master gardner and with some packets of seeds from Amazon (certified Hatch chiles), we now have chile rellenos the way they are supposed to be right here in Munich, Germany!

Because you are in the wrong part of PA.  Southeastern PA is dense with many great restaurants and probably the only place where you can get a real honest to goodness cheesesteak.  I just had a very tasty one with provolone and fried onions, washed down with a nice summer ale.  As for great sandwiches, no other region in the USA has better.

Butterscotch Krimpets - especially chilled in the fridge are sugary heaven.

I can think of 10 quality restaurants just in Lahaska, Sellersville, and New Hope alone.  And the food at the Sands in Bethlehem is durn good too.  Just saw Boston there a few weeks ago.

If you want a real treat, go to the Washington Inn in Sellersville on Sept 18, then walk next door the theater to catch Lez Zeppelin (all girl Led Zep tribute band).  One night only.  That's a quality evening for us down-in-the-holler types.

Oh man you're killing me here. I can almost taste the cheesesteak. I cry a little inside up here every time I have to   hear someone order a "steak and cheese". I found a pizza place I will order from based simply on the fact they have "hoagies" on the menu. Every other place thinks it's a grinder.  :bhead :bhead :bhead

Had a girlfriend that worked at the Washington Inn. What she lacked in brains she made up for in.........ahhhh never mind

When it comes to
Cheesesteaks there's a small pizza shop in Quakertown ( right up the road from Sellersville) called Franks....cheesesteaks that I would crawl over broken glass, then swim across a pool of rubbing alcohol for. I like them 10x better than Genos or Pats in S.Philly

If your ever back up this way Yankee....there's a great restaurant  down the street from me called Melt....maybe 20mins or so from Sands in the Prommenade shops Center Valley

I'll get a local price (4 corners) from the Farmers Market tomorrow for the 25lb box.
The Hatch store  https://www.hatch-green-chile.com/shop/fresh-hatch-green-chile/medium-hot/
runs $60 a 25lb box but won't guarantee non spoilage shipping on anything but 3 day for the boxes
and that gets pricey (ie 25lb box UPS ground to Pitts area from NM about $45).
Shipping blurb from their site is
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
All our 5 pound boxes of fresh ship free via USPS Priority Mail (not recommended for customers outside of the continental US) while 10 and 25 pound boxes can be shipped 3 Day, 2 Day or Overnight FedEx. Ground delivery is available to customers within FedEx’s 3 Day ground delivery area on our larger boxes but we recommend 2-Day Air instead. If you choose ground, you may lose a few pods in transit but sometimes can save enough on shipping to order another box of chile. We ship every Tuesday during the season, so your package should be delivered on or before Friday. Orders for fresh must be placed by Monday night in order to go out the following day. Orders placed on Tuesdays will ship the following Tuesday.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I feel for you, I would not be able to live without Blakes Lota-Burger breakfast burritos smothered or the double green chili burger from the Aztec store.

They have some on order but it will be end of week before they get it.Albertsons in Farmington is at .99 a lb, but they are out and waiting for more.  I will keep an eye out on other markets when I go into town.

Yankee67, I appreciate your help with this, but I just found a source in New Mexico that can get me a 25lbs box for $19 plus shipping. Unfortunately, a 5lbs box won't last very long with us so I am going to go for the 25lbs box. But again, my wife and I appreciate your help.

Jeep, did you forget to take your meds again     LOL

TJ, that is our concern. When we lived there (20+ years ago) you could find semi-trucks full of chili on almost every corner this time of year. Miss the state fair too.

Ya need to make more trips to Pittsburgh Vance alot of great food joints on Carson Street and Dam I forget the Polish joint I used to eat at all the time when I went out there, Originally from Pittsburgh but family moved to the east side of the state one day I will be back out there

Hey Mols, with the way things are now in da Burg, we stay as far away from there as we can. We are home-bodies and I don't own a gun yet so going into that shooting gallery is not an option. Being from the Southwest, there is nothing around here that even remotely compares to getting Southwestern/Tex-Mex cooking. Luckily I married one of them beautiful Southwestern women that knows how to cook so when we can get the chili, I am one happy camper.

Again, for those who have offered to send green chili, my wife and I greatly appreciate it. We did find a source in New Mexico that can do a 25lbs box for $19 plus shipping so hopefully we will be swimming in green chili by the end of next week.

Se ya down the barrel of my tank . . .
