If the pilot of a B-29 handed over throttle control to the engineer right after take-off, and didn't use it again until back on the ground, how was formation flying done?  Were the formations much looser than the combat boxes B-17s and B-24s flew?  There would be an inherent delay and lack of precision in telling the engineer to make small and rapid changes in throttle control.

Any input into this matter would be appreciated.
