Is there a mathematical formula for altitude and speed aside from bombsight calibration? The boat is moving, so how do you know how far in advance of the toejam to drop your ords? Is it a trial and error sort of thing?
-
Your own speed & altitude is taken care of by a correct bombsight calibration. For the CVs own speed, allow one boat length for each 10k of altitude you are at.
The ability to hit turning CV's is then a matter of experience.

Ok, 1 boat length per 10k of altitude. Now I am assuming that is when you are traveling in the same direction of the carrier? If you are traveling towards it, it would have to be much further in front of it correct?

No. Always the same, because this is to correct for the CV's own speed, and the CV always travels forward.
As mentionen before, your own movement is being taken into account by a correctly calibrated bombsight.

Gotcha! Ok, one more question. How do you manually calibrate? I've heard people doing it before, and heard of FSO settings requiring manual bombsight calibration.
-
113th Lucky Strikes uses the P38L and two flights, first flight in takes out cruiser and tin cans on one side of the carrier. Second flight in puts everything on the CV, defensive flak is totally ineffective at that point. Seldom takes a third flight.

Hit F6 to get in the bombadier position.
Hit U to enter calibration mode.
Press & Hold Y to calibrate.
Longer you hold Y the more accurate your calibration to your speed and altitude.
Hit U again to lock in calibration.

This is easy mode LW calibration, manual requires you to manually hold the + on a spot for the calibration time with your joystick.
