Title: It's irritating to me.
Post by: FLOOB on October 23, 2015, 03:21:00 PM
It's irritating to me that the word quixotic is pronounced nothing like its origin Quixote.

I understand but "kee-hot-ick" just doesn't work, does it? "Kwicks-otic " does. Just my honest opinion....

it's especially because I did not know it was pronounced differently.  That explains why that hot Redhead rolled her eyes and walked away from me when I used it during our casual conversation.

Did you tell her that she looks totally quixotic?

You could be quixotic by starting your own trend of pronouncing it like Quixote.

Don Quixote (/ˌdɒn ˈkwɪksət/[1] or /ˌdɒn kiːˈhoʊtiː/; Spanish: [ˈdoŋ kiˈxote]) Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don_Quixote (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don_Quixote)

Adjective quix·ot·ic \kwik-ˈsä-tik\ Source: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/quixotic (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/quixotic)

I understand you though, preferring the kiːˈhoʊti variation.  (http://www.cool-smileys.com/images/onhorse3.gif)

I've never in my life heard anybody pronounce Don Quixote as dɒn kwɪksət. Is that what they're teaching children these days?

No. The upside down e represents a shwa sound, which sounds nothing like "shwa" if you don't know what shwa sound is. So kwiksuht.

Years from now the mispronunciation of this quixotic character's name will also become acceptable. Dollars to doughnuts.
